Bonmatí leads Spain past Germany 1-0, sets up Euro 2025 final against England
A stubborn Germany performance
had seen it take the world champions to extra time and Spain needed a superb strike from the
two-time Ballon d'Or winner
to secure a first win in nine attempts against Germany.
'I feel so proud. We deserved this,' Bonmatí said. 'We have played a great tournament throughout. We had a hard fight tonight, of course, because we were playing Germany. First to beat Germany and then to advance to the final of the Euros, who could ask for more?'
In the 113th minute, Athenea del Castillo threaded the ball through to Bonmatí, who got past Rebecca Knaak with a clever dummy and turn before squeezing home an audacious attempt from the tightest of angles.
'We had analyzed her and knew that she would leave the near post unprotected, and that is what happened. I just slotted it home,' Bonmatí said.
Spain moved within one victory of adding the European Championship trophy to its collection after winning the World Cup and Nations League in the past two years.
Montse Tomé's team will face defending champion England on Sunday in a repeat of the
World Cup final that Spain won 1-0
two years ago.
England also needed extra time for
a 2-1 win over Italy
on Tuesday.
It was a tough end to a stellar tournament for Berger,
who had been the star
of
Germany's dramatic quarterfinal
against France.
'I take the blame for that. The near post must be shut, absolutely,' Berger said. 'That's why I'm even more disappointed in myself.
'I can make as many saves as I want, but that one should have been mine, and that's why I'm incredibly sorry. For the team, not for me, but for those who gave their all.'
Germany coach Christian Wück absolved Berger of any blame, and instead acknowledged her 'saves that got us to where we are.'
'We imagined it differently and to concede just before the end because of such a stroke of genius, that makes it incredibly bitter,' he added.
Germany was bidding for a record-extending ninth European title but it was up against the world champion and pre-tournament favorite.
It almost surprised Spain early on when Klara Bühl ran onto a long ball from goalkeeper Berger, but her angled drive went narrowly past the right post.
Germany managed to stifle Spain's attack, which didn't have a real sight of goal until the 21st minute when Berger made a fantastic save to tip a shot over the bar from the tournament's top goalscorer Esther González.
Giovanna Hoffmann should have given Germany the lead in the 29th but she missed the ball right in front of goal, with a fresh air shot, after excellent play by Jule Brand.
Spain ended the half strongly, however, and went closest to breaking the deadlock shortly before the interval when Irene Paredes headed a corner off the post and González's overhead kick was blocked.
Berger also had to make two smart saves in stoppage time, to deny first Gotham FC teammate González and then Clàudia Pina.
Germany managed to keep Spain star Bonmatí relatively quiet for almost an hour until she carved out some space for herself and curled in a shot that Sophia Kleinherne slid to stop.
Cata Coll had had little to do all night but the Spain goalkeeper kept her team in the tournament with a superb double save right at the end of regulation time, first to parry from Bühl and then to deny Carlotta Wamser.

Australia's injury woes continue as Pollard steps in for Porecki in third test against Lions
SYDNEY (AP) — Another injury has forced late changes to Australia's lineup for the third rugby test against the British and Irish Lions, with Billy Pollard promoted to start at hooker after David Porecki and Matt Faessler were ruled out of Saturday's match. Porecki was ruled out Friday with a leg injury, making way for Pollard to move into the starting XV off the bench for his 10th test. Faessler's calf muscle injury meant Brandon Paenga-Amosa had to be drafted in from outside the Wallabies squad assembled in Sydney. Head coach Joe Schmidt had already unveiled four changes to Australia's starting XV and another two on the bench on Thursday after the contentious , last-gasp 29-26 loss in the second test at Melbourne last weekend. Another injury to Porecki compounds the absence of flanker Rob Valetini — who missed the series opener and had a big impact on the second test before leaving at halftime — and veteran prop Allan Ala'alatoa. 'Gutted to lose, I guess, a few, great players ... but we have a lot of confidence,' in Paenga-Amosa,' Wallabies captain Harry Wilson said at the captain's run on the eve of the test. 'Brendan joined us yesterday afternoon, obviously after a bit of a tough Thursday training session.' Wilson said the 29-year-old Paenga-Amosa, had already played tour games against the Lions and was an experienced Wallaby. 'He's got a lot of confidence, and he's coming into the group and he's fitting very quickly,' Wilson said. Australia hasn't lost three tests in a Lions tour since 1904 and is facing a confident British and Irish squad that is 8-0 in Australia, including victory in the first test in Brisbane, the second test in Melbourne, wins over Super Rugby franchises Western Force, Queensland Reds , Waratahs and Brumbies and two invitational teams. Taniela Tupou was recalled at tighthead and the scrumhalf Nic White is returning for his final international appearance in a reworked Wallabies lineup trying to prevent the British and Irish Lions completing a 3-0 sweep. ___ Squads: Australia: Tom Wright, Max Jorgensen, Joseph-Aukuso Sua'ali'i, Len Ikitau, Dylan Pietsch, Tom Lynagh, Nick White; Harry Wilson (captain), Fraser McReight, Tom Hooper, Nick Frost, Taniela Tupou, Billy Pollard, James Slipper. Reserves: Brandon Paenga-Amosa, Angus Bell, Zane Nonggorr, Jeremy Wiliams, Langi Gleeson, Tate McDermott, Ben Donaldson, Andrew Kellaway. British and Irish Lions: Hugo Keenan (Ireland), Tommy Freeman (England), Huw Jones (Scotland), Bundee Aki (Ireland), Blair Kinghorn (Scotland), Finn Russell (Scotland), Jamison Gibson-Park (Ireland); Jack Conan (Ireland), Tom Curry (England), Tadhg Beirne (Ireland), James Ryan (Ireland), Maro Itoje (England, captain), Tadhg Furlong (Ireland), Dan Sheehan (Ireland), Andrew Porter (Ireland). Reserves: Ronan Kelleher (Ireland), Ellis Genge (England). Mariners reliever Trent Thornton carted off field after injury coming off mound in 9th inning
SEATTLE (AP) — Seattle reliever Trent Thornton was injured while coming off the mound on a ground ball in the ninth inning Thursday night and was carted off the field during the Mariners' 6-0 win over the Texas Rangers. Thornton was using crutches to get around the Mariners' locker room after the game and the team did not have an official diagnosis of the lower left leg injury he sustained on the grounder hit by Adolis Garcia with two outs. Thornton said he feared it was a significant Achilles injury and that he would have an MRI on Friday. 'It's probably the Achilles, but that's just speculation, so I'll find out tomorrow,' Thornton said. 'Very frustrating.' Thornton entered the game to start the eighth inning and retired the first five batters he faced. The right-hander then had a full count on Garcia before the righty hitter hit a grounder on his 95 mph fastball on the lower outside corner. 'I threw the pitch, and as soon as I turned, I thought I broke the guy's bat and it hit me in the back of the leg, and I fell,' Thornton said. Thornton said his first reaction at that point was to try to look at his leg to see what had happened. 'I tried to get up and just couldn't even put pressure on it at all,' Thornton said. 'It didn't hurt. It's just achy and numb. But I guess I don't know. I'm still trying to process this a little bit, and I'll find out more tomorrow.' Mariners manager Dan Wilson said he thought Thornton pitched 'fabulous' before the injury. 'We'll find out more tonight,' Wilson said. 'Hoping for the best.' ___ AP MLB:

Jess Carter ‘itching' to return to Gotham on heels of Euro tumult
Jess Carter could have been in England, participating in the celebrations following the Lionesses' triumph in the European Women's Championship and decompressing from what was a harrowing international tournament for the veteran defender. Instead, she hurried back to rejoin her Gotham teammates before they resume the NWSL season Friday night against the Stars in suburban Chicago. 'I was just itching to get back. I want to be part of this team, helping this team win games,' Carter said Thursday. 'I'm really happy at Gotham, and I feel really comfortable around the team and around the girls, so I just wanted to get back to this environment.' Carter spoke out about the racial abuse she endured during the Euros, and said she would take a break from social media. 'Hopefully, speaking out will make the people writing this abuse think twice so that others won't have to deal with it,' Carter said in a statement. Carter had been involved in allowing both goals as Sweden took a 2-0 lead before England's dramatic comeback in the quarterfinals. She did not start in the semifinals and played just one minute as a late substitute. 3 Jessica Carter defender of England and Gotham FC during the UEFA Womens EURO 2025 quarterfinal match between Sweden and England at Stadion Letzigrund on July 17, 2025 in Zurich, Switzerland. Gotham general manager Yael Averbuch West said the team was in regular contact with Carter while she was abroad to share mental health resources and to let her know 'there's a strong contingent in New Jersey ready to fight on her behalf.' 3 Stina Blackstenius of Sweden (left) plays against Jessica Carter of England (right) during the UEFA Womens EURO 2025 quarterfinal match. 'Seeing Jess succeed went far beyond the game, and it was such an important moment.'
