JNU Teachers' Association launches ‘month of protests' over delayed promotions, probation extensions

New Delhi, May 7 (PTI) The Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers' Association (JNUTA) has announced a series of peaceful demonstrations throughout May to highlight long-pending issues related to faculty promotions, confirmations and probation extensions.
The association also flagged concerns over the extension of probation periods of some faculty members, which it described as departure from established norms.
'These unresolved matters have had an adverse impact on the morale of the faculty and reflect larger procedural and governance concerns within the university,' JNUTA said in a statement.
The protest will begin on May 8 with a mass delegation rallying to the office of the dean of the School of Language, Literature and Cultural Studies.
Similar demonstrations are planned at offices of the deans of Social Sciences, International Studies, Life Sciences, Computer and Systems Sciences, and Biotechnology in the following weeks.
The JNUTA noted that the Deans, as members of selection committees and the Executive Council, play a key role in forwarding and recommending faculty-related decisions, and therefore have a responsibility to ensure that the processes are fair and transparent.
Later in the month, the association plans to take its campaign to the offices of the Internal Quality Assurance Cell chairperson, the registrar, and eventually the vice-chancellor. JNUTA said it remains hopeful that the administration will respond constructively and work towards a timely resolution of the issues raised.

In 2020, the Narendra Modi government had issued 'Press Note 3', a new FDI policy under which investors from these land bordering countries now require mandatory government approval to invest in any sector in India. As per sources, Press Note 3 is equally applicable to all the land bordering countries of India which are China, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Bhutan, Nepal, Myanmar and Afghanistan. All FDI proposals from these nations undergo the similar process of scrutiny and examination as per standard operating procedure for the processing of investment proposals from these nations, they said, according to the PTI report, Presently, an inter-ministerial committee headed by the Home Secretary has been tasked with considering applications under Press Note 3. Raj warns govt again against Hindi in school
Mumbai: MNS chief Raj Thackeray has written a letter to the state govt demanding that only two languages, Marathi and English, be taught from Class 1 in schools affiliated to the state education board. In the letter written on June 2 to school education minister Dada Bhuse, which Thackeray posted on X on Wednesday, he said the govt should issue an order to this effect, failing which the MNS would hold protests in the state. He sought to know whether the state govt was under any pressure when it earlier announced to make Hindi compulsory as a third language for students of Classes 1 to 5. In April, the govt had decided that Hindi as a third language will be mandatory for students between Classes 1 and 5 in Marathi and English-medium schools across the state. The MNS had slammed the move saying the party will oppose the decision vehemently and ensure it is not implemented. Amid stiff opposition to the move, the govt stayed its order with Bhuse declaring that a fresh government resolution (GR) would be issued to the effect. PTI
