
Embarrassing: CBS journalists advocate against free speech
If you follow the news business at all, you regularly come across the mythology of Walter Cronkite — the voice of the nation. He was a 'giant,' the story goes, who single handedly turned the tide of public sentiment against the war in Vietnam with his coverage. In his day, Cronkite and CBS were trusted and respected.
My, how times have changed. Today, if you want to see BS 'news' now, all you have to do it turn to CBS News.
Cronkite was a liberal, something he eventually admitted near the end of his life. But people knew it at the time. You can't convey news dispassionately and be passionate about the happenings in the news. When he uttered his famous line — 'But it is increasingly clear to this reporter that the only rational way out then will be to negotiate, not as victors, but as an honorable people who lived up to their pledge to defend democracy and did the best they could' — it was a shock. It was the first time a prominent 'journalist,' something separate from a 'commentator' at the time, had openly put his own personal beliefs on display in the course of his coverage.
Those beliefs had always been there, of course, in story-selection and what was and was not reported, but they never owned it in that way. Now, journalism has been reduced to nothing but the sharing of journalists' opinions and crafted narratives.
What has changed most recently is that the left has lost its monopoly on information. Now, it flows freely from everywhere, leaving people to decide for themselves. We still do not have unbiased media, but we have all manner of biased media that empowers audiences to sift through the facts and draw their own conclusions.
The reason the establishment media hated the late, great Rush Limbaugh so much was that he began the process of killing their monopoly. Rush showed the world what was on the cutting room floor — the things liberal media found inconvenient or didn't want the public to see — and he shared it with tens of millions of listeners every day. He paved the way for Fox News, the Drudge Report, X (formerly Twitter) and every conservative outlet bringing eyes to, as Paul Harvey used to say, the rest of the story.
When they whole story became available, the truth was exposed about just how biased the media had always been. Rather than correct course and become the 'unbiased truth-tellers' they'd always pretended to be, most ran headlong to the left. The news as reported by NBC News and MSNBC today is often indistinguishable from a DNC press release.
The chief anchor at ABC News is someone who helped run Bill Clinton's 1992 presidential campaign and served as press secretary for the Democrat. Later, while a journalist at ABC, he participated in weekly phone calls with former President Barack Obama's chief of staff to talk strategy.
Knowing this, and so much more — that CNN and MSNBC basically serve as golden parachutes for Democratic administration officials — it came as no surprise when CBS News dedicated last Sunday to advocacy for canceling the freedom of speech.
It started with 'Face the Nation' host Margaret Brennan embarrassing herself by claiming the Nazis' Holocaust was caused by the freedom of speech. It was shocking in its abject ignorance.
But it got worse. That evening, '60 Minutes' spent most of its show highlighting, in a positive way, German authorities' criminalization of 'hate speech,' which they define in such a nebulous way as to include anything that might upset the sensibilities of any Ivy League sophomore.
During her ride-along with Germany's Thought Police, '60 Minutes' correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi only accidentally wandered close to asking a critical question about their work suppressing non-conforming opinions.
'You're doing all this work,' she said. 'You're launching all these investigations. You're fining people, sometimes putting them in jail. Does it make a difference if it's a worldwide web and there's a lot of hate out there?'
Walter Cronkite would surely regret to know that he served as the tip of the spear for this disgraceful transformation of his former employer and his profession into what it is today. The primary work of CBS, NBC and ABC News is now to spread propaganda and skewed narratives, and to wall off their audiences from differing perspectives and inconvenient facts.
This is why their audiences are dwindling and their organizations are dying — and it cannot happen fast enough.

Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee promises ‘relentless effort' at community inauguration
Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee promised during a community inauguration Sunday to lead with 'openness, honesty and relentless effort' and invited the community to join her to make the city better. 'If we match hope with hard work, there's nothing that this city can't do, so let's do it,' Lee said on a stage at Jack London Square. 'Let's grab whatever you can grab — a paintbrush, a policy idea, a neighbor's hand, because the next chapter of Oakland starts now.' She added: 'All of you are co-authors of this next chapter.' Lee was elected in April and sworn in last month. The former congresswoman replaced former Mayor Sheng Thao, whom voters ousted in November in a recall fueled by a federal investigation that resulted in bribery charges against her. Thao pleaded not guilty to the charges. Lee takes over as the city confronts a historic budget deficit, public safety concerns, homelessness and illegal dumping, among other issues. By the end of this month, the city must balance its budget, which includes an annual deficit of about $140 million. Lee previously said the city will address the deficit through both short- and long-term solutions, though she did not provide specifics. During her remarks Sunday, after she again took the oath of office, Lee spoke of her work in the first few weeks of her administration. The goal from the start was to 'turn hope into action,' the Democrat told the crowd, which included faith leaders, business owners and other dignitaries, including California Attorney General Rob Bonta, California Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis and San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie. Already she's met with faith and business leaders to discuss public safety strategies. She acknowledged that despite violence prevention efforts and a decrease in homicides last year, some residents still don't feel safe. 'We've got to work to change this narrative in Oakland,' she said. Lee also said she traveled to the state Capitol to advocate for the city, 'because Oakland deserves its fair share of state resources,' she said. 'I made it clear: Investing in Oakland lifts the entire Bay Area.' State Sen. Jesse Arreguín, a Democrat whose district includes Oakland, said the city needs a 'proven leader with integrity and experience' to unite the city and region. 'That leader is Mayor Barbara Lee,' he said. Arreguín, who serves as chair of the public safety standing committee, said he's committed to working with Lee to curb crime in Oakland and make the city safer. He pledged to support the city's Ceasefire strategy and other violence-prevention programs. Oakland City Council President Kevin Jenkins called Sunday 'a beautiful day in Oakland.' He noted that Lee is the city's fourth mayor in two years. 'But I think we got it right this time,' he quipped. Jenkins described Lee as a mayor for all, especially Oakland residents 'who don't know where City Hall is.' 'The way she campaigned is the way she's going to govern: with integrity,' he added. Selena Wilson, CEO of the East Oakland Youth Development Center, urged the public to support Lee. 'We must continue to stand with her.' Barbara Leslie, president and CEO of the Oakland Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce, picked by Lee as a co-chair of her transition team, said she can attest that Lee 'hit the ground running.' 'Frankly, my goal is just to keep up,' Leslie said, joined by members of the Rotary Club of Oakland #3 and Oakland Restaurant Collective. 'We are here to support you, as your success is Oakland's success,' Leslie said.

'60 Minutes' correspondent Scott Pelley warns a CBS settlement with Trump would be 'very damaging'
"60 Minutes" correspondent Scott Pelley spoke out about President Donald Trump's lawsuit against CBS and its parent company on Saturday, arguing that a settlement would be "very damaging." "Well, it'd be very damaging to CBS, to Paramount, to the reputation of those companies," Pelley said during a conversation with CNN's Anderson Cooper on Saturday, who asked how harmful a settlement and potential apology would be to the network. Trump filed a lawsuit against Paramount Global, CBS News' parent company, over a "60 Minutes" interview with former Vice President Kamala Harris in October 2024. Fox News Digital confirmed that Trump rejected a $15 million offer to settle his lawsuit, according to a source familiar with the matter, as the president's legal team is also demanding at least $25 million and an apology from CBS News. Cooper, who is also a correspondent on "60 Minutes," also asked Pelley about former show producer Bill Owens resigning from the program in April. "Bill's decision to resign may not have been much of a decision for him because he was always the first person to defend the independence of '60 minutes.' Bill didn't work for Paramount. Bill worked for our viewers, and he felt very keenly about that. And so I'm not sure Bill had any choice, once the corporation began to meddle in Bill's decisions about the editorial content, or just place pressure in that area, Bill felt that he didn't have the independence that honest journalism requires," Pelley said. Pelley also said he wished he had the public backing of CBS News, but added that his work was still making it onto the program. "You really wish the company was behind you 100%, right? You really wish the top echelons of the company would come out publicly and say '60 Minutes', for example, is a crown jewel of American journalism, and we stand behind it 100%. I haven't heard that. On the other hand, my work is getting on the air, and I have not had anyone outside '60 Minutes' put their thumb on the scale and say, 'you can't say that. You should say this. You have to edit the story in this way. You should interview this person.' None of that has happened. So while I would like to have that public backing, maybe the more important thing is the work is still getting on the air," Pelley said. The "60 Minutes" correspondent recently went viral for calling out Trump during a commencement address. "In this moment, this moment, this morning, our sacred rule of law is under attack. Journalism is under attack. Universities are under attack. Freedom of speech is under attack," Pelley said during his commencement speech at Wake Forest University. "And insidious fear is reaching through our schools, our businesses, our homes and into our private thoughts, the fear to speak in America. If our government is, in Lincoln's phrase, 'Of the people, by the people, for the people,' then why are we afraid to speak?" Pelley addressed the remarks during the CNN interview and told Cooper that he felt "strongly" it needed to be said. "I don't refer to him or the president or the White House or the administration. But I was talking about actions that have been taken by the government over these last many months. But, there was a little bit of hysteria among some about this speech, and I simply ask you, what does it say about our country when there's hysteria about a speech that's about freedom of speech?" the CBS correspondent added.
