Seb Atkinson urged to seize England centre shirt after impressive debut

Independent11-07-2025
England arrived in Argentina with Steve Borthwick looking for young players to make a statement and prove they could cut it at international level.
Gloucester's Seb Atkinson has done just that and assistant coach Kevin Sinfield believes the inside centre could make himself very difficult to drop with another big performance this weekend, even when the Lions contingent return .
Fresh from a remarkable defensive display on debut in the 35-12 win in La Plata, where he made all 21 tackles he attempted, Atkinson is now set to be the senior partner in England's midfield, where he will line up alongside newcomer Luke Northmore after Henry Slade 's injury.
Still only 23, Atkinson hit the headlines earlier this year when he set a new best mark for a rugby player in the bronco drill – a gruelling fitness test used across the world.
On the evidence of this tour, he is more than just a fitness freak though, and even though the likes of Fraser Dingwall, potentially Ollie Lawrence and even Owen Farrell could come back into the selection conversation in November, Sinfield feels Atkinson has the potential to establish himself in the longer term.
He said: 'He's been outstanding. He's come in and fitted in seamless. A great addition. From the moment he came into camp we were all taken aback at how talented he was. We've seen it first hand at Gloucester, but to see it here and be able to work with Seb and see the quality he brings, his maturity as well for a young guy, I thought he was outstanding last week.
'He can run like not many others can. He knows the game so tactically he's where he should be, but technically he's very good too.
'Without looking too far ahead you think of the autumn series and the players that then become available. These guys hold the shirts for us at the minute. If he goes well again it will be pretty tough to take that 12 shirt from him.'
It is not just Sinfield who has been impressed by Atkinson, with England co-captain Jamie George also showering him with praise.
For George, it is Atkinson's rugby IQ and ability to pick things up quickly that has been the most revealing, as he likened him to a Springbok great.
He explained: 'If I'm completely honest, I'd played against him but I didn't know too much about him. You hear about his bronco score and that sort of rubbish but I'm always sceptical of that because I'd like to see the measurements measured out exactly because I'm a boring old man!
'But he's a very, very impressive athlete, he works very hard. The basics of his game are very good and he's very mature.
'You always know when a good player comes in, how quickly they pick things up. I remember Schalk Burger when he first came into Sarries, he understood the game plan like that (clicks his fingers).
'I sort of see the same from Seb, he comes in and fits in and understands it, yep 'no problem, I understand it'. It's quite hard to do and it shows that he's got a very good rugby brain, he's an intelligent bloke.'

Revamped Manchester City ready for new era without talisman De Bruyne

MANCHESTER, England, Aug 9 (Reuters) - Manchester City will embark on a new era this season in their first in 10 years without talisman Kevin De Bruyne as Pep Guardiola looks to make last term's third-place finish a distant memory and restore his revamped outfit to their former glory. They face a tough task against champions Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea -- all big spenders in the transfer window -- but the anticipated return of Ballon d'Or winner Rodri and scoring machine Erling Haaland to top form give reason for optimism. City were tipped last season to win a record-extending fifth consecutive Premier League title, but a mid-season nose-dive saw them fall well off the pace and miss a top-two spot for the first time since 2016-17. They finished third behind Liverpool and Arsenal with their worst points total under Guardiola, their nine league losses were more than their two previous seasons combined, they crashed out of the Champions League and League Cup early and their FA Cup final loss to Crystal Palace meant no silverware for the first time in eight years. Rodri was sidelined for most of the season after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament against Arsenal in September. Guardiola's men showed how much the Spaniard was missed when they went on a woeful run of nine defeats in 12 games across all competitions. After leading the Premier League in scoring for two successive seasons, Haaland's 31 goals across all competitions in 2024-25 remarkably constituted a drop in performance, although he still showed his lethal scoring ability in what was considered an off-year for the Norwegian. He will be keen to prove a point this season and put himself back in the running for the Golden Boot. Guardiola began his rebuilding last term, splashing out 180 million pounds ($241.72 million) on Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov, Nico Gonzalez and Vitor Reis. Marmoush had an almost immediate impact with a 13-minute hat-trick in a 4-0 win over Newcastle United in February. City's manager has further galvanised his squad by signing Dutch midfielder Tijjani Reijnders, Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Rayan Ait-Nouri, winger Rayan Cherki and goalkeeper James Trafford in the close season to push City's spending for 2025 past the 300 million pounds mark. Ait-Nouri was brought in to reinforce the left-back position, while Reijnders and Cherki were signed in the hope that they could replace De Bruyne's creative spark in midfield. While City boast one of the best strikers in the game in Haaland, the fight to support the 25-year-old runs deep with Marmoush, Phil Foden, Jeremy Doku, Savinho, Oscar Bobb and Cherki all in contention. Guardiola said that while there is a lot of positivity in the squad, he did not expect this season to be smooth sailing. "I'm pretty sure it'll be good, but it won't be a red carpet season, there'll always be problems, it's how you overcome those situations," the Spaniard said at a sold-out open training session earlier this week. "The expectation at the beginning of the season is always, let's go and try to do our best, win the first games, get confidence and move forward. Of course, we want to try and do better than last season, especially with consistency." The manager, who is under contract until June 2027, is not setting any targets for the season, saying it is difficult to determine what a successful campaign would be. "When the (players) give good spirit and fight and run and give their best, sometimes you can do your best and the opponents are just better," he said. 'It depends on ourselves, this is what we have to try to do. We challenge against ourselves, this is the target for the season.' A cloud continues to hang over the club as they face 115 charges of breaking Premier League financial regulations. City, who have always denied any wrongdoing, were charged with the alleged breaches in February 2023. British media expect a verdict during the October international break. ($1 = 0.7449 pounds)

Arsenal hoping for title success as big spending bolsters squad depth

Aug 9 (Reuters) - After watching three consecutive Premier League titles slip through their fingers, Arsenal have opened their wallet wide in the close season, completing early moves to ensure squad depth does not derail their championship dreams again. Having finished second behind Manchester City in the 2022-23 and 2023-24 campaigns, Arsenal failed to build on that momentum in the transfer market last summer when reinforcing the attack. Fans were left scratching their heads after deadline day when Raheem Sterling, a winger in decline, was brought in on loan, with Chelsea only too happy to oblige in offloading a player who was not in their plans. The painful pattern of finishing second was compounded last season when they fell behind Liverpool after losing key forwards Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz to long-term injuries, their league title drought stretching to 21 years. But new sporting director Andrea Berta, replacing Edu, has overseen a dramatic shift in approach as the club spent nearly 200 million pounds ($266.30 million) before August. In came midfielders Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard, defender Cristhian Mosquera, winger Noni Madueke, goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga and striker Viktor Gyokeres -- the final piece of the puzzle. Arsenal scored only 69 goals in the league last term, a massive drop from the 91 they netted the season before. Sporting's Sweden striker Gyokeres, meanwhile, found the net an eye-watering 54 times in all competitions last term to become the hottest target in the transfer market. "I was extremely happy with the way that we have approached the window and how aggressive we've been," Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said. "So far, we are very happy with what we have achieved. Make sure that at the end of the window, we continue to be super happy. Gyokeres's arrival also suggests a potential tactical shift in Arsenal's style of play, with the striker poles apart from how Havertz operates when leading the line. While the German constantly drops deep, Gyokeres's natural habitat is in the final third and his direct style of play might force Arsenal to get the ball upfield faster. Spaniard Zubimendi's mobility, his deep-lying playmaking skills and defensive nous will give Arsenal's midfield a measure of steel while also controlling the tempo. Norgaard's tactical awareness and versatility makes him a welcome addition while the Dane also brings Premier League experience and leadership qualities having captained Brentford. "You have to mix it up with some veteran players as well. I think we have a really good balance in our squad this year," midfielder Mikel Merino said. While the big-money signings grab the headlines, Arsenal's famed academy continues producing gems. Last season heralded the arrival of Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly on the big stage as the teenagers played a fearless and refreshing brand of football. Now, one more teenager is knocking on the door after impressing in pre-season -- 15-year-old Max Dowman, who Arteta described as special. Although still a long way from signing a professional contract, Dowman had already shown he was too good for the Under-18 league when the attacking midfielder netted 15 times last season. In Arsenal's pre-season friendly win over Newcastle United, Dowman showed he could deal with the physicality of the professional game, gliding across the pitch and skipping challenges while also earning a penalty. Arteta has succeeded in making Arsenal contenders not only in the Premier League but also in the Champions League where they made a memorable semi-final run. But he must now take the final step to lift silverware and squad depth can no longer be an excuse as they hunt for a first trophy since winning the FA Cup five years ago. "To be in the dispute for titles, you have to have the best players ... We have let a couple of titles slip through our fingers recently," defender Gabriel Magalhaes said. "We almost won. But I think this year, things will be different." ($1 = 0.7510 pounds)

Manchester United vs Fiorentina live: Team news, line-ups and more from pre-season friendly

Manchester United take on Fiorentina in their final pre-season friendly before the start of the Premier League season with Ruben Amorim afforded one last chance to embed his style on the players before the new campaign. The Red Devils have spent heavily this summer to bring in Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and possibly Benjamin Sesko, who will form their new look forward line. Bruno Fernandes has previously slated his teammates for a 'lazy' performance during a 2-2 draw with Everton in the United States and the captain will want a better outing today. United's first match of the season is against Arsenal at Old Trafford and today's match could reveal how suited the squad is for such a difficult start. Fiorentina are hoping to finally get a win against an English side having already lost to Leicester City and drawn with Nottingham Forest during their pre-season. Can they cause an upset this afternoon?
