NFL buys 10% stake in ESPN, which buys NFL Network, RedZone

The NFL sold its NFL Network and Sunday RedZone television show to ESPN on Tuesday in exchange for a 10% equity stake in the US-based sports television network. Both companies announced the deal, which also includes the combining of NFL Fantasy Football with ESPN Fantasy Football. Federal regulators must approve the transaction, a process that could take several months, according to the league. Until the deal closes, fans are unlikely to see any significant changes to ESPN or NFL Network. NFL team owners also must approve the deal, but that is seen as little more than a formality given the expanded reach on offer for NFL programming. "I think we've hooked up with the best partners we can have," said New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, chairman of the NFL's media committee. "That will help expose us to more homes, more of an international audience. Strategically, we have to grow our salary cap and can only do that by -- if we want to keep labor peace, we have to grow our audience. This transaction helps us to do that." Global growth opportunities for the NFL, which already plays games overseas every season, played a key role in motivating the NFL to get terms of the deal sorted. "We're hooking up with the strongest sports amalgamation of sports product," Kraft said. "We're giving them what I believe is the best content, and they're giving us the greatest operational company to grow our audience globally. "This is a way for us to broaden our audience. We've done so much. I don't think there's any company like (ESPN owners) Disney and ESPN in doing sports, all sports. We need to expose our product to more people and a greater variety of people." js/sla

ESPN inks deal with NFL to acquire NFL Network, Red Zone Channel

ESPN and the NFL have reached a deal that will see the Disney-owned sports media company acquire NFL Network and certain other media assets owned and controlled by the NFL in exchange for a 10 percent equity stake in ESPN. The agreement, which will see NFL media assets including NFL's linear RedZone Channel, and NFL Fantasy, will allow the NFL to license to ESPN certain content and other intellectual property to be used by NFL Network and other assets. 'Today's announcement paves the way for the world's leading sports media brand and America's most popular sport to deliver an even more compelling experience for NFL fans, in a way that only ESPN and Disney can,' said Bob Iger, Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company, promising the deal would 'add to consumer choice,' and 'provide viewers with even greater convenience and quality,' of ESPN's coverage of the league. The deal comes as ESPN prepares to launch a direct-to-consumer streaming service later this year and capitalize on the NFL's explosive popularity. The league has long awarded lucrative media rights agreements with major legacy media companies like Comcast, Disney and Fox, but has in recent years partnered with a growing number of tech companies like Netflix and Amazon to broadcast games. ESPN's push toward direct-to-consumer streaming comes amid broader concerns about increased cord-cutting and an increasingly tough market for advertising on linear television channels.

Oklahoma Sooners 5-star defensive end target sets commitment date

The Oklahoma Sooners are in the running for one of the top edge rushers in the nation in ESPN five-star prospect Jake Kreul. Oklahoma, along with Texas and Ole Miss, is in the running for the elite pass rushers' services, and Kreul has set a decision date ahead of his senior season. Kreul told ESPN's Eli Lederman that he plans to commit on August 12. Kreul is the No. 22 player in the class according to ESPN and No. 61 according to 247Sports. He's one of the most polished pass rushers in the class, and with his size and strength, would have an opportunity to play early in his career. Oklahoma has made a strong play for Kreul. Defensive ends coach Miguel Chavis has built a strong relationship with the IMG Academy product, and Kreul is a former teammate of Sooners defensive linemen David Stone and Jayden Jackson. While predictions have favored the Sooners in this recruitment, it's one of those national recruiting battles that could go in any direction. Texas is a major player, and Ole Miss shouldn't be counted out due to their recent success developing defensive end prospects. He's an elite player with the ability to be a difference maker against the run and as a pass rusher. He has 36 Power Four offers. Any team would be thrilled to land a player with his skill set. Can the Oklahoma Sooners hold off the Longhorns and Rebels to land the elite prospect? We'll find out on August 12.
