How ‘The Handmaid's Tale' Pulled Off That Surprising Finale Reunion
If you've been following io9's coverage of The Handmaid's Tale season six, you might have caught our list of five things viewers needed to remember about season five. There was a long gap between seasons, and quite a few high-stakes plot threads to keep track of.
One of the items on that list was the departure of fan-favorite character, whose absence was explained away in the season five premiere. We wondered if perhaps that person might return in season six, and, well…
Yes! Alexis Bledel's Emily, fearless fighter and noted salted caramel ice cream fan, did indeed show up for some closure in 'The Handmaid's Tale,' the series finale episode. In season five, we learned she'd left her wife and son—after a hard-fought escape to safety—to return to Gilead and keep fighting.
It was an abrupt end for a character who'd been so important as both a friend to June (Elisabeth Moss) as well as to the plot of The Handmaid's Tale as a whole; it's because of Emily that we learned about Mayday. She's the reason why Bradley Whitford's Commander Lawrence entered the story. Her experiences also illuminated the bleak life for exiles in the Colonies, as well as the genital mutilation forced upon women who refused to obey Gilead's draconian laws.
Though the character's absence was due to Bledel choosing to leave the series, it was tempting to imagine Emily would soon pop up again. But she was MIA throughout season five and all of season six until the very end. In interviews with the Hollywood Reporter, Bledel as well as Moss and show creator Bruce Miller discussed how they planned her cameo.
'We were both thrilled that it might work out,' Miller told THR. 'I think she was really excited when we talked. The only thing that was hard was the logistics to get her up for the time we needed … It was wonderful to see her and [Moss] get right back into it after all that time.'
Moss added, 'She wanted to do it from the beginning. She didn't need convincing at all. My first official scene on day one [on set] was with Alexis. So it meant a lot to get to work with her again.'
In a separate interview with THR, Bledel said returning to The Handmaid's Tale was 'an immediate yes' because 'it felt right to bring closure to Emily's journey and offer the audience a sense of completion … I hope viewers take away to keep hope alive when things seem impossible. Even if it seems like seeds you plant couldn't possibly grow, plant seeds of hope anyway. You never know; they might find a way.'
The Handmaid's Tale finale is now streaming on Hulu.

Niecy Nash-Betts gets candid on Hollywood sex scenes at 55: ‘It's stressful'
The claws are coming out for Niecy Nash-Betts. The actress, 55, opened up about sex scenes in the entertainment industry, while talking with Helen Mirren, Kathy Bates, Parker Posey, Keri Russell and Cristin Milioti during the Hollywood Reporter's Drama Actress Roundtable. 'You go through all the heart palpitations, the closed set. 'Was my side meat a little too jiggly? Are my kibbles and bits covered?' And then they don't use it! I put myself out there to be that vulnerable, literally exposed, and you don't use it? Now I got an attitude. Stuff it back in there somewhere!' I do not take it lightly.' Despite having a roster of variety, the 'Claws' star recalled one moment in particular that didn't sit well with her. 'I had it right to my face,' she said. 'I auditioned for something early in my career, and the two producers looked at each other and said, 'She's got a cute face. You think she can lose weight?' And I was like, 'Guys, she can hear you. She is here. And, no, she can't. Loretta Swit's Last Moments Emerge. Who Found Her?
To some fans, Loretta Swit will always be known as Margaret "Hot Lips" Houlihan, the character she played on the long-running sitcom M*A*S*H. Swit passed away on May 30, 2025, at the age of 87. Although the official cause of death was not released, some details about Swit's last moments are emerging. Her publicist, Harlan Boll, shared some of those details with TMZ. According to Boll, Swit spoke with him on the evening of Thursday, May 29, and she "seemed fine." She was at her apartment in New York City, TMZ reported. Around 10 a.m., her maid discovered her deceased, and she was pronounced dead two hours later at noon, Boll told the entertainment news site. Boll is the person who told TMZ she died of natural causes, although the formal cause of death is pending. Swit was an accomplished actress who received 10 Emmy nominations during her lifetime, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Swit was not married at the time of her death. According to THR, she was married once in her life, to the actor Dennis Holahan, "whom she met on the set of M*A*S*H, from 1983 until their divorce in 1995." Although best known for the Houlihan character, Swit had a lengthy number of television credits to her name, aording to IMDb. 'I always wanted to be an actress,' Swit told People in a 1979 over story that ran during the height of her career. SM Entertainment Artists Celebrate 30 Years With SMTown Live L.A.
Fans of SM Entertainment-signed K-Pop acts braved an unseasonably hot day for a chance to see members from 13 groups perform at Carson's Dignity Health Sports earlier this month. Known as one of Korea's 'big three' K-Pop agencies, SM brought members from acts dating back to 2003 as a part of their well-known SMTown Live concert series. This year marked the agency's 30th anniversary. It's been 13 years since the last SMTown Live in California, which took place in Anaheim. Several groups teased new music and exciting performances. TVXQ, Super Junior, SHINee's Key and Minho, EXO's Suho, Chanyeol and Kai, Red Velvet, NCT 127, NCT Dream, WayV, aespa, Riize, Hearts2Hearts and SMTR25 all performed; NCT Wish was slated to perform but was unable to attend due to visa issues. Girl group aespa seemingly teased their future plans at SMTown Live. 'We're about to release music very, very soon, so please stay tuned for that,' Winter told The Hollywood Reporter. The group described their performance of the night in one word: fire. The crowd went wild for the four-piece group, performing hits such as 'Whiplash' and 'Next Level.' 'It's our first time in L.A. for SMTown, and it's not every year that we can come here as a whole SMTown family,' Riize's Anton said before the concert. The group recently released their first album, Odyssey, which they previewed for fans during the L.A. show. 'It's a really special opportunity,' Anton continued. TVXQ, the eldest of the crop of performers, told THR that fans could expect to hear the duo's older songs, a promise they delivered on when they sang their 2008 K-Pop classic 'Mirotic.' The undeniably catchy track had the entire stadium singing along. 'We just want this performance to be a place where we can show a lot of synergy between the senior and the junior groups,' member Changmin told THR. Other groups like girl group Red Velvet decided to play older fan favorites. The three members who performed during the show surprised the audience with their 2018 song 'Bad Boy.' The group told THR they included it as a special treat. It was Red Velvet's first performance in L.A. in years, so they said they knew fans were 'going to love it.' On the other end of the spectrum was SM's latest endeavor, girl group Hearts2Hearts, who were fresh off a Saturday performance at Wango Tango. The eight-member outfit expressed how excited they were to be in L.A. for the first time. Stella, a vocalist, said the group was particularly looking forward to the show's final song, 'Hope from Kwangya,' where all of the night's performers come together to sing farewell. To perform that final song, all artists flocked to the stage and later waved goodbye to fans all together. SM Entertainment's next SMTown Live is set for June 28 in London. Another in Japan is scheduled for August.
