Review: Reggaelicious Kitchen in the Ayrshire village of Kilmaurs

"Since when has there been a Caribbean place in Kilmaurs?" a colleague responded incredulously when informed that Reggaelicious Kitchen would be the subject of this week's review.
In all honesty, until a few moments ago, I had also questioned whether this was the correct address for the business serving traditional Jamaican dishes of ackee and saltfish or jerk jackfruit, which I had read five-star reviews for online.
But here it is, nestled between a car wash and a bus stop, just a short walk away from the train station, with a converted St John's Ambulance used for catering events parked up outside.

That's how it all began for Derrick and Sharon Vaughan, as they decided to transform this quirky vehicle into a street food truck in 2019.
Creating a menu from recipes passed down from Derrick's mother, who had relocated from Jamaica to London as part of the Windrush Generation, the husband-and-wife team then set out to bring a taste of Caribbean sunshine to markets and festivals across Ayrshire and beyond.
A few years later, the duo were ready to set up a brick-and-mortar restaurant in their home village, taking over the unit from a Greek Cafe in late 2023.

Now confident that we're in the right place, we're greeted at the door by Sharon and led into a small dining room that's bright, colourful...and also totally deserted.
It's not like this all the time, we're assured as we take our seats by the window, but truthfully, I'm thankful for a change of pace from high-end restaurants that must be booked weeks in advance to ensure you secure your dinner.
Though it's BYOB, we stick to soft drinks, toasting new experiences with a Jamaican Ginger Ale and a glucose level spiking 'Caribbean Crush (£2 each)'.

Starters, then. From a choice of either chicken on the bone or tenders coated in the restaurant's own 'Reggaelicious seasoning', we choose the latter (£6) to share. I'm a fan of the gentle spices here, adding a salty, slightly fiery flavour to three chunky strips of chicken. I do, however, have issues with the cooking, suspecting that this has been reheated rather than prepared fresh.
Whether or not this is the case, there's a tough, chewy texture to the meat, which is in some places separating from that all-important crust. It's far from a write-off, however, and straight from the fryer: I reckon this would be a different beast entirely.
With an infectious smile on his face, Derrick visits our table between courses to fill us in on how things work at the Reggaelicious Kitchen. He cooks and delivers takeaway orders to the surrounding areas, but we should be under no illusions - it's Sharon who is the backbone of the whole operation. 'She really keeps everything going,' he says before heading back to join her in the kitchen.
They make quite the team, and even better hosts.
Pictured: Main courses and sides from Reggaelicious Kitchen (Image: Newsquest) Fortunately, we've parked ourselves at one of the restaurant's largest tables, because next arrives a banquet of mains and sides to share.
'Jamaica's national dish' of saltfish and ackee (£10) is a balancing act of firm white fish, rich and intense, mellowed by the West African fruit. It's wonderfully savoury and rounded out by liberal amounts of fresh thyme.
Jerk chicken (£9) is served on the bone, sitting in a bowl of gravy-like sauce rather than prepared with a simple dry rub as I had anticipated. It's ideal for dipping the Jamaican dumpling (£1.50), a heavy scone-like puck of dough that I'm utterly enamoured with. It takes some serious willpower to hold back from ordering a second.
Pictured: Side dishes of Jamaican dumpling, slaw and plantain (Image: Newsquest) Of our three extra sides, the plantain (£2.20) comes out on top with a sticky caramelised outer layer and fibrous flesh still firm inside. Jamaican slaw (£3) has been spiked with a dark purple hue by red cabbage, but fruity jewels of pomegranate, raisin and pineapple shine through. Finally, rice and peas (£2) do the trick in binding the whole lot together as we methodically spoon a little of each dish onto our side plates at a time.
How fun to be introduced to so many new flavours in one go. Although again, there's room for improvement in the cooking of these dishes, which, as it stands, are just a touch too far from a temperature that would showcase them at their best.

For dessert, there's the choice of Caribbean cakes (£2.20 each) or individual ice cream tubs (Also £2.20 each). We order the Pineapple and Coconut as well as a Jamaican Ginger cake to go, which is less faff than we anticipated as it transpires they are both pre-packed loaf slices.
So off we go, saying our goodbyes to the lovely Sharon and Derrick before making our way back down the motorway to Glasgow, somewhere around only an hour after first arriving in Kilmaurs.
Michelin Stars and fine dining conventions have their place in this world, but so too do the small, family-run businesses like this, which are equally as passionate about their food.
As unexpected as it may be to find traditional Caribbean dishes in a village just outside of Kilmarnock, it really is quite brilliant.
Menu: Starters of fried chicken followed by Jamaican dishes like ackee and saltfish, curry lamb and jerk pork. Desserts are limited to pre-packed cakes and ice cream. 3/5
Service: Husband and wife duo Derrick and Sharon run the show, making us feel welcome and happy to chat about their food. 5/5
Atmosphere: We have the restaurant to ourselves all evening, which takes a while to get used to. I'm sure that on a busier day, this place would have a great buzz. 3/5
Price: Mains sit around the £10 mark, while sides will set you back as little as £1.50 for a dumpling or £2.20 for plantain. 4/5
Food: There are some fantastic flavours to be found here, particularly in the jerk chicken and sweet, sticky plantain. Dishes appear to be reheated to order, which, in this instance, detracts from the quality of cooking. 6/10
Total: 21/30
Reggaelicious Kitchen is located at 19 Townhead, Kilmaurs, East Ayrshire.

Mum and daughter travel 10,000 miles for Edinburgh Tattoo but are left in disbelief

Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info An Australian mother and daughter who travelled over 10,000 miles for the Edinburgh Tattoo were left 'in disbelief' after it was cancelled. Cynarra Baker and her mother Sharon flew from Newcastle, in New South Wales, starting their journey on July 24. The pair stopped off in Dubai, before a mini-holiday in Paris and then on to the capital - with the total flight time adding up to almost 24 hours. The Baker family first dreamed of coming to the Edinburgh Tattoo after Cynarra's grandmother, Flo, told her she would love to come - but they needed a few years to save. While Flo passed away in 1997, the Bakers never given up on her dream of coming to the capital for the annual extravaganza. Almost 30 years later, Sharon and Cynarra finally arrived in Edinburgh. They had travelled for 13 hours and 45 minutes from Sydney to Dubai, with a seven hour journey onto France - before another two hour flight to Edinburgh. Cynarra, who has two children herself, said they were in 'utter disbelief' after getting the update on the morning of the Tattoo. They were staying at the Murrayfield Hotel the night before the show, which they had tickets for on August 4. Cynarra, who retired from the Airforce in 2016 and has worked as a carer since, said she couldn't sleep with excitement - buzzing with anticipation. She woke up and checked her emails, to find out that Storm Floris meant the performance wouldn't be happening. The Bakers fly back to Australia on Sunday, August 10, and admitted that any tickets available during the rest of their time in Scotland would be far too expensive - and scupper the rest of their plans. After checking online Cynarra found tickets for around £650 each - and knew that 'wasn't going to happen'. Sign up for Edinburgh Live newsletters for more headlines straight to your inbox Instead of getting ready and heading out to the Tattoo on Monday, the pair hunkered down with a bottle of wine and some Netflix while avoiding the storm. Now, they're up in Inverness 'learning about the Highlander way of life' - which is perfect for two 'massive Outlander fans'. After they were contacted by Edinburgh Live, a spokesperson for the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo confirmed they would like to speak with Cynarra and Sharon to explore options of 'how to make their dream of seeing the Tattoo come true'. The Tattoo's CEO Jason Barnett admitted the Bakers tale was 'especially gut-wrenching' and he 'shared their disappointment'. We spoke with Cynarra after the Monday nights cancellation, who told us: "When I was a teenager I asked my grandmother if she wanted to come to the Edinburgh Tattoo at the castle in Scotland. "My nana's response was 'oh my, I'd love to go with you'. I told her to give me a few years to save, once I have a full time job, and we'll go. "I joined the Royal Australian Airforce in 1996 and my grandmother passed in 1997. But that dream never left me. "Life happened, and mum said she really wanted to come to the tattoo with me as as well. But my dad would never leave Australia for a holiday." After Cynarra's father passed away in December 2023, she suggested to her mum that the pair go together. They booked the trip in February, and spent months looking forward to it. Arriving from a stop off in Paris on August 2, the duo were 'so excited' to be heading to the Tattoo on August 4. By the time they were in Scotland, an amber weather warning for Storm Floris had been issued. (Image: Supplied) Cynarra recalled: "Mum and I were staying at Murrayfield Hotel. I had a terrible sleep so excited to be going to the Tattoo the next night and we had booked a tour with Rabbies departing at 8.15am. "I got up and I checked my emails to check the departure time as we had to check in 30mins before departure to find an email saying the tour for the day had been cancelled as well as the Tattoo because of Storm Floris. It's uncanny they named the storm Floris as my grandmothers nickname was Flo. "I laid in disbelief and asked my mum if she was awake. I then read the email out to my mum, both of us were just silent. Mum just said 's**t'. Well I'm staying in bed then. I emailed our travel agent in Australia. "He was gutted. I checked tickets for the next night all that was available was £650 each tickets so about £1400 each so we knew it wasn't going to happen. "Both mum and I sat in our room absolutely in disbelief. What are odds of this happening." The duo allowed themselves a bit of time to be disappointed by the news, before continuing on with their holiday. They told us: "We had a nice breakfast at Murrayfield and watched Netflix all day, purchased a bottle of wine and went to bed. Now we're looking forward to going to Inverness!" Join Edinburgh Live's Whatsapp Community here and get the latest news sent straight to your messages While the news was 'devastating' for the Bakers, they had other plans while here in Scotland. The pair got hire car and drove to Corriefodly Holiday Park, planning to do day trips to various spots. As for returning to the city another year, and a second go at the Tattoo, Cynarra isn't so sure. She added: "Mum says definitely no as she is 70-years-old. For me I'm not sure, as I love this place it feels like home to me." The family are heading up north to 'learn more about the history of Scotland', with Cynarra looking forward to standing 'where the Highlander way of life changed'. She added: "I am a huge Outlander fan, and learning about he history of Scotland battle of Culloden Field is a must experience for me. "Just to stand where the highlander way of life changed will be an experience that needs to be felt. We might nip over to Aberdeen as well." Jason Barrett, CEO at The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, said "Hearing that Cynarra and Sharon have travelled from as far as Australia and won't be able to see the Show as a result of our cancellation is especially gut-wrenching and I share their disappointment. "While we can't control the weather, we are exploring options as to how we can make their dream of seeing the Tattoo come true."

Ozzy Osbourne's heartbreaking but sweet final nod to Sharon revealed in death certificate

Ozzy Osbourne has made a final, sweet yet utterly heartbreaking nod to his widow, Sharon, after his death certificate confirmed his cause of death just weeks after he died Ozzy Osbourne's utterly heartbreaking last nod to his wife Sharon has been revealed. Last month, the world was left in a state of disbelief when the Osbourne family confirmed that the music icon had sadly died at the age of 76. ‌ The news came just days after Ozzy performed what was billed as his farewell concert, Back to the Beginning, with his Black Sabbath bandmates in his beloved hometown of Birmingham. He also met fans at a Comic Con event in the days leading up to his death. ‌ Earlier this week, Ozzy's death certificate confirmed the cause of the Prince of Darkness's death, revealing he died following an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, acute myocardial infarction, coronary artery disease and Parkinson's disease with autonomic dysfunction (joint causes). It comes after Sharon Osbourne breaks down in tears at Ozzy's funeral in heartbreaking scenes. ‌ It also confirmed that his cause of death was officially registered at a hospital local to the family estate in Buckinghamshire. In England, regulations state that a doctor who attended the deceased or has knowledge of their medical history can sign the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death. After the MCCD is completed, it is reviewed by a medical examiner, who later submits it to the registrar. Ozzy, who was registered as John Michael Osbourne, otherwise known as Ozzy Osbourne, had his occupation listed as:"Songwriter, performer and Rock legend". It added a sweet nod to Sharon, as it continued: "Husband of Sharon Rachel Osbourne, Music Artist Manager." Sharon became Ozzy's manager in 1979 after he was fired from Black Sabbath. It was also around this time that she and the Aston-born legend started dating one another. ‌ Confirming that Ozzy had died last month, a statement from the family said: "It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning. He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time. Sharon, Jack, Kelly, Aimee and Louis." Since the death of the musician, who has been hailed as one of the best of his time, his son Jack has spoken out. Taking to Instagram earlier today, Jack said: "I haven't really wanted to post anything since the passing of my father. My heart has hurt too much. I'm gonna keep this short because he certainly hated long rambling speeches. ‌ "He was so many things to so many people, but I was so lucky and blessed to be apart of a very small group that got to call him 'Dad'. My heart is full of so much sadness and sorrow, but also so much love and gratitude. I got 14,501 days with that man, and I know that is such a blessing. I think this quote best describes my father. "Hunter S. Thompson once said: 'Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body... but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming, 'Wow! What a ride!' That was my dad. He lived and he lived his life fully. I love you dad." ‌ Meanwhile, Ozzy and Sharon's daughter, Kelly said on Monday: "I've sat down to write this a hundred times and still don't know if the words will ever feel like enough... but from the bottom of my heart, thank you. The love, support, and beautiful messages I've received from so many of you have truly helped carry me through the hardest moment of my life. Every kind word, every shared memory, every bit of compassion has meant more than I can ever explain. "Grief is a strange thing—it sneaks up on you in waves-I will not be ok for a while-but knowing my family are not alone in our pain makes a difference. I'm holding on tight to the love, the light, and the legacy left behind. Thank you for being there. I love you all so much. Kelly #BirminghamForever #OzzyForever." Following his death, heavy metal lovers from across the globe flocked to his hometown, leaving floral tributes on the Black Sabbath bridge and bench on Broad Street in the city centre, which was inspected by a heartbroken Sharon, Aimee, Kelly, Jack and Louis, who also laid their own tribute. It has since been confirmed by Birmingham City Council that all the tributes left will be sent to the Osbourne family, with the flowers being scattered around Ozzy's grave on their Buckinghamshire estate. The flowers left will be mulched before being scattered, while drawings and letters will be delivered to Ozzy's loved ones.
