UCF football position preview: Defensive line
The sixth in an occasional position-by-position preview of the UCF football team heading into the offseason:
TODAY: DEFENSIVE LINE
What to expect
No unit provides as much experience as the defensive front, which is anchored by a pair of veteran edge rushers, Malachi Lawrence and Nyjalik Kelly. Together, this duo accounted for nearly half of the team's total quarterback sacks last season, contributing 10.5 out of the 22 sacks. The addition of Pittsburgh transfer Sincere Edwards, who recorded 3 sacks and 6 tackles for loss, will strengthen a group that also includes returning players Jamaal Johnson and Isaiah Nixon.

The return of John Walker, who missed the entire 2024 season due to a leg injury, enhances the tackle position. This is especially important given the departures of starters Ricky Barber and Lee Hunter. Georgia Tech transfer Horace Lockett Jr. is expected to play a significant role at the nose tackle position alongside Derrick LeBlanc. Additionally, Tulsa transfer R.J. Jackson Jr. will serve as a strong backup for Walker.
What they're saying
'I want us to be known as a violent group, a group that gets to the ball and a group that is respected. When guys run the ball, they better go to the perimeter. That's the expectation for us. We want to be physical up front, locking things out and being disruptive even in the pass rush. I want to be able to knock stuff back, to penetrate and affect the quarterback.' — UCF defensive tackles coach Kenny Martin.

Skip Bayless unleashes on Steelers for bringing in 'blame-deflecting diva' Aaron Rodgers
The Pittsburgh Steelers waited until the sixth round to select a quarterback in April's NFL Draft. But, after drafting former Ohio State quarterback Will Howard, the Steelers quarterback room still featured more questions than answers. This week, Pittsburgh appears to have found a short-term solution to its signal caller concerns. The four-time NFL MVP agreed to a one-year contract, the Steelers confirmed. The 41-year-old quarterback is expected to attend the team's mandatory minicamp next week. While the signing was met with both praise and criticism, Skip Bayless made his feelings about the Steelers decision clear. In a video posted to his social media platform, Bayless characterized Rodgers as a "diva" and suggested the veteran quarterback did not have much left in the tank. "He was washed his last three years in Green Bay," Bayless said. "Go look at the numbers of his last three playoff games in Green Bay … I told the Jets he was washed." Bayless then offered a pun, claiming Rodgers would "steal from the Steelers." A bewildered Bayless then questioned the state of the storied franchise. "What has become of the Pittsburgh Steelers?" he continued. "I don't hate them anymore, I pity them." The Steelers finished last season with a 10-7 record. Longtime head coach Mike Tomlin has never finished a regular season with a losing record. The Baltimore Ravens in the wild-card round loss to the Baltimore Ravens in January. Justin Fields started the first five games of the Steelers' 2024 campaign, before Russell Wilson took over. Fields signed with the Jets earlier this offseason, while Wilson landed with the New York Giants. Rodgers hasn't taken a team to the playoffs since he left Green Bay. January 2022 marked Rodgers' last postseason appearance. The Packers suffered a 13-10 loss in the divisional round in that game. After suffering a season-ending injury in the first game of the 2023 season, Rodgers appeared in all 17 games in 2024. He finished the year with 3,897 passing yards and 28 touchdowns against 11 interceptions. After spending the 2024 season with the Tennessee Titans, the Steelers brought back Mason Rudolph. Skylar Thompson was also on the roster, but neither quarterback was viewed as the primary starter entering 2025. New York Jets receiver has garnered a strong association with Aaron Rodgers being that he is one of the quarterbacks favored targets in recent years, but he does not seem inclined to join the polarizing veteran with his new team.
New York Jets receiver has garnered a strong association with Aaron Rodgers being that he is one of the quarterbacks favored targets in recent years, but he does not seem inclined to join the polarizing veteran with his new team. originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Jets are long removed from the Aaron Rodgers saga. Two years of drama and disappointment bore no fruit for the franchise and they have turned the opposite way with new leadership and a new quarterback under center. Advertisement Meanwhile, Rodgers waited for months to choose his next career move. Once things became too painstakingly obvious, he finally signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers this week. Now the Steelers get their turn dealing with the Rodgers circus though they had few options elsewhere to find their QB1. If there is one thing to take away from the last few years of Rodgers' career without diving into the polarizing antics that come with him, he fervently enjoys playing with a familiar group of receivers. When he went to the Jets, the team surrounded him with a company of such players, including Davante Adams. Allen Lazard also falls into that category, having played with Rodgers on the Green Bay Packers before joining him in New York. Advertisement As the Rodgers saga dragged on there was a belief that his buddy could join him in the Steel City. However, that may not be the case as PFT's Mike Florio believes Lazard may want to go his own way and prove himself with the Jets. "Per a source with knowledge of Lazard's thinking, he sees a very real potential benefit to proving his ability to function at an acceptable level without Rodgers as his quarterback. "With the Jets planning a run-heavy offense under new coach Aaron Glenn (and new quarterback Justin Fields), there's a premium on receiver blocking. At six feet, five inches and 225 pounds, Lazard fits that role perfectly." Florio also noted that there is no guarantee here, but Lazard by no means is a lock to don the Black and Gold in 2025. That may be his best prospect for his career with the complete unknown that is this budding and likely short-term relationship between the Steelers and Rodgers. Advertisement Rodgers worked out with current Steelers No. 1 DK Metcalf in California earlier this offseason, so there is at least one pass catcher with some familiarity with the quarterback. Nothing is certain either way here, but Rodgers' old pal may be best suited sticking to his guns here and showing the league what he can do in a system tailored to his abilities. Steelers bringing in FA wide receiver Gabe Davis for visit
Just after the 2025 NFL draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers traded wide receiver George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys. Now, the Steelers might finally be taking his replacement seriously. According to ESPN NFL reporter Adam Schefter, the Steelers are bringing in free-agent wide receiver Gabe Davis for a visit on Thursday. Davis' career was on the rise after four seasons with the Buffalo Bills and he parlayed that into a huge free-agent contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars. But it was clear from the beginning that Davis wasn't a great fit with the Jags and saw a big dip in production. Jacksonville decided to move on from Davis and instead selected former Colorado wide receiver Travis Hunter to pair up with Brian Thomas Jr. Advertisement It makes sense that the Steelers would be interested in Davis. He not only provides elite size and speed but also comes as a bargain. Jacksonville is on the hook for $11.5 million of Davis' salary this season, so Pittsburgh wouldn't have to spend a fortune to get a player to compete with Robert Woods to be the Steelers No. 2 wide receiver.
