Soccer-Fiorentina terminate contract of manager Palladino weeks after extending his deal

(Reuters) - Raffaele Palladino has left his role as Fiorentina manager after the Serie A club said on Friday that they had terminated his contract by mutual consent, just three weeks after he had signed an extension.
"Fiorentina can confirm that Raffaele Palladino's contract, as well as those of his backroom team, has today been terminated by mutual consent," the club said in a statement.
Former Monza coach Palladino was appointed last June on a two-year deal with an option of an extra year. Fiorentina announced the extension until 2027 on May 7, the eve of the club's Conference League semi-final second leg with Real Betis.
Fiorentina were knocked out of the competition by the Spanish club, having reached the last two Conference League finals, and then lost to Venezia in their next league game to leave them ninth in the Serie A standings.
Two wins in their final two matches earned Fiorentina a sixth-place finish, qualifying for the Conference League, but despite leading Fiorentina to their best league position since 2016, Palladino's style has failed to win over the fans.
Without a trophy since 2001 and after losing three finals in the previous two campaigns, Fiorentina supporters are losing patience with owner Rocco Commisso who bought the club in 2019.

They had only a few thousand in the stands when they triumphed in a high-tempo semi-final against another South Africa club Orlando Pirates last month. Pyramidsmoved to Cairo in 2018 and changed their name under new Saudi owners. They have since been taken over by investors from the United Arab Emirates but failed to attract much support despite challenging the traditional duopoly in recent years. But Jurcic made it clear they were still treated as outsiders as he again criticised Egypt's football association, which made them play a league game on Wednesday. "Where else in the world is a club forced to play a local match a few days before they compete in a Champions League final?," he said. Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso, however, said he did not think it would have any effect on Pyramids' chances in the final. "They rested most of their key players on Wednesday," he said of Pyramids' 5-1 win over Ceramica Cleopatra in their last league fixture of the season. Cardoso also did not think a small crowd would hinder their hosts. "They are used to playing without fans and they still fight for their championship and got to the Champions League final. "Patricio will arrive to the United Arab Emirates tomorrow evening to undergo medical tests and join the first-team training," Al-Ain added. A semi-finalist in Paris last year, Gauff, who had lost both previous matches against the world number 47, powered into a 3-0 lead, attacking every first serve from her opponent. The 21-year-old was in complete control and gave Bouzkova no chance in the opening set, firing a superb backhand down the line to earn another break to love and move 5-1 up. On a sun-drenched afternoon with temperatures hovering around 30 degrees Celsius, Gauff wasted little time, wrapping up the set on her serve when she thundered another stinging backhand winner on her first set point. In the first set, Gauff won 100% of her first serve points but that was about to change.
