Israeli hospital to join NASA, SpaceX mission to study microgravity's effects on diseases
Sheba Medical Center's ARC Digital Innovation Center is joining a NASA and SpaceX mission to the International Space Station (ISS) on Thursday for a study on the extreme conditions of space, Sheba announced on Wednesday.
The experiment, dubbed the ARC Space Lab, is the second of its kind from Sheba, which remains the only hospital in Israel carrying out studies in space.
How does microgravity impact diseases?
One of the major barriers facing humankind's continued expansion into outer space is the unknown effects of long-term space travel on the human body. Finding out how to help astronauts adapt to challenges they may face when off planet for extended periods of time is a natural and essential step forward for medical science.
For this experiment, Sheba will partner with the US firm SpaceTango to grow several bacterial species aboard the ISS using a specially designed Earth-controlled system. After growth under microgravity, the bacteria will be stabilized, frozen at -80°C and returned to Earth for molecular and transcriptional analysis and direct comparison to bacteria grown simultaneously in an identical lab setup on Earth.
It is known that space has an impact on bacteria. For example, astronauts are more likely to develop infections, theorized to be due to a combination of microgravity, radiation, stress, and changes in the human microbiome.
However, this goes both ways. In a previous ARC Space Lab study, it was found that bacteria in space are less likely to develop antibiotic resistance. This was a major discovery and went against the prevailing hypotheses of the time, and the findings of this study were published in the peer-reviewed academic journal Microbiology Spectrum.
'We know that space conditions affect bacterial behavior, including how they grow, express genes, and acquire traits like antibiotic resistance or virulence,' Sheba Infectious Diseases Unit head Prof. Ohad Gal-Mor said in a statement.
'This experiment will allow us, for the first time, to systematically and molecularly map how the genetic expression profile of several pathogenic bacteria changes in space. The insights we gain will augment our understanding of infectious disease risks in space travel, and also expand our knowledge of gene regulation and bacterial physiology in general.'
Sheba ARC director Prof. Eyal Zimlichman added, 'To understand the limits of medicine, we sometimes need to go beyond the limits of Earth. Our experiment in space examines how bacterial behavior changes under extreme conditions and what that means for human health—not just for astronauts, but also here on Earth. This is part of ARC's mission to shape the future of medicine, wherever it's needed.'

China tackles chikungunya virus outbreak as thousands fall ill
China is attempting to tackle an outbreak of the chikungunya virus with more than 7,000 cases of the disease already being reported. Chikungunya is spread by mosquitoes and causes fever and joint pain, similar to dengue fever, with the young, older people and those with pre-existing medical conditions most at risk. Authorities in the country are taking preventive measures, from mosquito nets and clouds of disinfectant, threatening fines for people who fail to disperse standing water and even deploying drones to hunt down insect breeding grounds. Numbers of new cases appear to be dropping slowly, according to authorities. Chinese state television has shown workers spraying clouds of disinfectant around city streets, residential areas, construction sites and other areas where people may come into contact with virus-bearing mosquitos that are born in standing water. Workers sprayed some places before entering office buildings, a throwback to China's controversial hardline tactics used to battle the COVID-19 virus. People who do not empty bottles, flower pots or other outdoor receptacles can be subject to fines of up to 10,000 yuan ($1,400) and have their electricity cut off. The U.S. has issued a travel advisory telling citizens not to visit China's Guangdong province, the location of Donguan and several other business hubs, along with countries such as Bolivia and island nations in the Indian Ocean. Brazil is among the othe rcountries hit hard by the virus. Heavy rains and high temperatures have worsened the crisis in China, which is generally common in tropical areas but came on unusually strong this year. China has become adept at coercive measures that many nations consider over-the-top since the deadly 2003 SARS outbreak. This time, patients are being forced to stay in hospital in Foshan for a minimum of one week and authorities briefly enforced a two-week home quarantine, which was dropped since the disease cannot be transmitted between people. Reports also have emerged of attempts to stop the virus spread with fish that eat mosquito larvae and even larger mosquitos to eat the insects carrying the virus. Meetings have been held and protocols adopted at the national level in a sign of China's determination to eliminate the outbreak and avoid public and international criticism.

Experts Advise on How to Study DEI in Cancer
As the largest financial supporter of medical research in the US, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has helped uncover health disparities in cancer incidence, prevalence, and outcomes. Grants funded with that federal money aimed at reducing disparities have also included initiatives that enhanced the health of all patients with cancer. An example of these in the ACCURE study — Accountability for Cancer Care Through Undoing Racism and Equity — a system-based intervention to reduce Black-White disparities in treating early stage lung cancer that's now featured on the HDPulse site as one of the 23 interventions that improves minority health. Not only does that intervention resolve disparities between Black and White patients but 'it actually also shows markedly improved care for everyone,' said principal investigator Sam Cykert, MD, professor emeritus of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC). But since January, an executive order by the Trump administration has prohibited nearly all funding related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). It's not possible to characterize how much of that funding was specific to DEI-related research, but a total of $1.8 billion in overall NIH funding has been terminated through early April. That includes $223,566,041 in grants at the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD), representing 8.9% of its funding from the NIH, and equivalent to 29.6% of all its grant funding. The National Cancer Institute had 0.6% of its grants cancelled, a total of $180,774,481. In June, a federal judge struck down the directive against using NIH funding for DEI-related research, but the Trump administration is likely to appeal the decision. Medscape Medical News reached out to the US Health and Human Services (HHS) for more information on the grants and amount of money cancelled and whether the department leadership has concerns about the impact of cancelled funding on cancer outcomes for marginalized populations. An HHS spokesperson told Medscape Medical News through email that the department 'remains committed to advancing cancer research and other serious health conditions' but does not see DEI-related research as part of that commitment. 'Unfortunately, this work was previously funded under an inappropriate and ideologically-driven — rather than scientifically driven — DEI program under the Biden Administration,' the spokesperson wrote. 'In the future, these types of programs will be reviewed based on their scientific merit rather than on DEI criteria.' Experts, however, emphasized the importance of ongoing research in this area. So how can they continue this work that they say is integral to improving healthcare for all? Alternative Sources of Funding Clinicians acknowledged significant barriers to conducting DEI-related medical research, but they also provided a glimmer of hope. In interviews with Medscape Medical News , they gave suggestions for how to find funding in these uncertain times. Cykert, who is also program director emeritus of UNC's Program on Health and Clinical Informatics, spent more than 30 years studying health disparities in cancer. He pointed out that the American Cancer Society has always been a strong funder in this area. 'Health equity across the cancer continuum' is one of their research priority areas, and they can often be competitive with what the National Cancer Institute pays. But he acknowledged that private foundations cannot close the gap left by NIH funds no longer available. 'We're going to have to start looking at alternate funding sources, at foundations like the American Cancer Society, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Susan G. Komen, and private donors that increasingly are giving funds for cancer research,' said Yolanda VanRiel, PhD, RN, the department chair of Nursing at North Carolina Central University and a part-time patient placement coordinator at First Health of the Carolinas-Moore Regional Hospital. 'There are philanthropic arms of health systems that people don't think about,' she said. 'Industry partners, especially those that are focused on community engagement and patient-centered outcomes, are also viable.' She also mentioned PCORI (the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute), and the Oncology Nursing Foundation. In addition, the Michelson Medical Research Foundation gives awards that focus specifically on immunology, vaccines, and immunotherapy. 'You can [also] collaborate with community-based organizations, and that can also open doors to funding that's tied to local or regional health equity initiatives as well,' VanRiel said. These options have always been there, but people have generally tried for NIH's big pot, she said. 'I think a lot of the time, when you're in specialty areas, you know about these, but it's time to make everybody realize that you can come back to the American Cancer Society,' she continued. 'When a lot of people think of Susan G. Komen, they think about the walk or other things, but they give out grants too.' Don Dizon, MD, a professor of medicine at Brown University's Warren Alpert Medical School, director of the Pelvic Malignancies Program at Lifespan Cancer Institute, and head of Community Outreach and Engagement at Legorreta Cancer Center, Providence, Rhode Island, said he has several colleagues whose funding has been pulled. Dizon, whose research includes health disparities among LGBTQ populations and advocacy on behalf of sexual and gender minoritized communities, called for 'more leadership from the institutional side' and for industry to step up. 'I think this is where industry can flex its muscle and say, 'We truly believe that addressing disparities when it comes to clinical trials is an important endeavor to ensure community health,'' he said. Advice for Wording Grant Applications VanRiel, Dizon, and Cykert also offered their thoughts on how to word federal grant applications to increase the likelihood of getting approval within the expectations of updated federal guidelines. 'I would emphasize that I'm going to make care better and cheaper for everyone,' Cykert said. 'Then we'll do a subgroup analysis to see if we're missing anybody.' 'We have proven that when you do system-wide interventions that reduce disparities, you actually improve care for everybody because the care for White patients isn't perfect in this medical system either,' he noted. Dizon calls for researchers to focus on the existing data in disparities research. 'The way forward is not to focus on the idea of advancing diversity, advancing equity, advancing inclusiveness [in grant applications] but to put forward a rationale to identify and address the disparities that exist in healthcare,' he said. He also suggested researchers look closely at the language in federal requests for proposals, as well. 'Be very careful to mirror the language that they're using because I do think they still want to do work in improving health outcomes for populations,' Dizon said. VanRiel recommended writing grants focused on the social determinants of cancer outcomes or geographic disparities, such as individuals in the South who face access barriers. 'Our responsibility as researchers is to produce knowledge that improves care for all patients,' she said. There still may be funding from the NIMHD, but the future of that institute remains unclear since the proposed 2026 budget for HHS noted that the NIMHD will be eliminated. Could northern lights appear in US this week? Geomagnetic storm could trigger auroras
A coronal mass ejection hurtling from the sun toward Earth could unleash the northern lights in up to 18 states for two nights in August. When experienced stargazers in the continental United States hear the words, "geomagnetic storm," likely one question comes to mind: Are we getting some northern lights? In this case, the answer is definitive: Yes. An explosion on the sun's outermost atmosphere of charged particles, known as a coronal mass ejection, has been hurtling toward Earth since Tuesday, Aug. 5, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The agency's Space Weather Prediction Center has since been tracking the ejection, which it said has the potential to soon trigger a geomagnetic storm on Earth. What does that mean for skywatchers? Well, the particles flowing from the sun could interact with our planet's magnetosphere in ways that trigger the northern lights, also known as the aurora borealis. For the next two nights, the luminous green and red glow of the auroras may be more widely visible than is typical in up to 18 states in the U.S. Here's everything to know about the solar storm, as well as where and when to see the northern lights it could produce in the U.S. Northern Lights: The sun is spewing massive solar flares toward Earth Could geomagnetic storm disrupt communications on Earth? Weaker solar activity won't be noticeable here on Earth. But a geomagnetic storm with enough energy output has the potential to disrupt satellites, communications systems, and even ground-based technologies like power grids if directed at our planet. In extreme cases, powerful solar events even pose risks to spacecraft and astronauts, NASA says. About a year ago, in May 2024, a historically powerful geomagnetic storm was responsible for some reports of power grid irregularities and interference with GPS signals – even farming equipment. On the bright side, it also unleashed spectacular views of the northern lights in parts of the country where auroras are not often visible. In this case, a rapid, intense flash of electromagnetic energy ranks as a G1-G2 on NOAA's scale, indicating a minor-moderate geomagnetic storm that could cause "manageable effects to some technological infrastructure," the agency stated. A moderate geomagnetic storm is also strong enough to unleash views of the northern lights, also known as auroras, in some northern and upper midwest states. What are the northern lights? The auroras are a natural light display in Earth's sky that are famously best seen in high-latitude regions of the Northern and Southern hemispheres. The phenomenon is caused when electrically charged particles from space enter Earth's atmosphere and collide with molecules and gases like oxygen and nitrogen, causing the atmospheric particles to gain energy. To return to their normal state, the particles release that energy in the form of light, according to the University of Alaska at Fairbanks Geophysical Institute website, which tracks the phenomenon. As auroras form, Earth's magnetic field redirects the particles toward the poles through a process that produces a stunning display of rays, spirals and flickers that have fascinated humans for millennia. Whether hues of green, red, blue and even pink dance about in the sky depends on the altitude where the collisions occur, as well as the composition and density of the atmosphere at the time. Where could auroras be visible? For most of the time, auroras are best seen around the magnetic poles of the Northern and Southern hemispheres in Europe, Asia and North America. In the U.S., Alaska is well known to have the best viewing opportunities for the northern lights. But a geomagnetic storm tracked by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is expected to make the auroras visible farther from the poles. The geomagnetic activity detected by NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center has a Kp index of 6 on Thursday, Aug. 7, meaning the northern lights will be active and brighter further from the poles, according to the agency. "At this geomagnetic activity level, it might be possible to see the aurora from the northern edge of the United States," NOAA says on its website. In the U.S., the auroras will be visible Thursday to at least the northern parts of the following states: A thin red "viewline" representing the southern-most locations from which you may see the aurora on the northern horizon extends to: Geomagnetic storm could produce auroras again Friday night The geomagentic storm will be less powerful Friday, Aug. 8, but is forecast to still be strong enough to trigger the northern lights once again across the northern U.S. By then, though, NOAA predicts the KP index will be downgraded to a 5, which still means the auroras are still bright further than usual from the poles. "If you are in the right place, these aurora can be quite pleasing to look at," according to NOAA's description of of 5-rating on the KP scale. When, how to see the northern lights Even though conditions are prime for more impending aurora shows, experts have long struggled to accurately forecast exactly when and where the phenomenon will ever occur. Even the best predictions can accurately be made only a few days or even hours in advance. But as a rule of thumb, if the weather is clear, the best aurora is usually visible within an hour or two of midnight, according to NOAA. And if it looks as if the northern lights will flare up near you, you should get away from cities and travel to dark locations free from light pollution so you can best see them. The agency also maintains an aurora dashboard that should help skygazers track the phenomenon.
