'Je Suis Milhouse': Matt Groening Gets Emotional At Annecy As He Reveals The Motivation Behind The 800-Episode Longevity Of ‘The Simpsons'
Matt Groening, arguably the greatest TV animator of all time, grew visibly emotional receiving the Honorary Cristal Award at today's Annecy International Animation Film Festival, which he labeled the 'best festival in the world, animation or otherwise.'
Receiving the gong in front of a packed house, he paid tribute to the 'gods and goddesses' in the audience, who 'fill the universe with crazy characters who do what you tell them to do.'

'You can have them be brave but isn't it more fun to have Homer fall off a cliff?,' he said. 'We torment our characters and have fun with them.'
Groening was emotional as he thanked his family and reminded the audience that the main characters in The Simpsons are famously named after his father and mother, Homer and Marge, his sisters, Lisa and Maggie, and his grandfather, Abe.
Is Bart named after Groening? 'I'll let you into a little secret…. Je suis Milhouse,' joked Groening, in reference to Bart's loveable, dorky best friend.
After watching a new ep of The Simpsons, the audience were treated to a masterclass from Groening, animator David Silverman and showrunner Matt Selman.
During this session, Groening revealed the real thing that has motivated him to return to The Simpsons after all these years.
'We don't think about being responsible but our main motivation is to surprise ourselves,' he said to applause. 'If we surprise ourselves then we think we can surprise the audience.'
The secret to the 36-year-old animation stalwart's 800-episode longevity is never to be lazy and keep layering the humor, he added.
'As it goes on we become known for different kinds of jokes,' added Groening. 'We have parodies of cinema and references to books, TV shows and personal autobiographical anecdotes. The sum total of the show is that contribution of everyone involved.'
In the next season of The Simpsons, there will be an ode to famous American cartoonist Jules Feiffer and Groening quoted Feiffer when referencing The Simpsons' long-lasting success: 'Jules said with every advance in technology comes decline in quality. So we have tried to maintain that hand drawn quality.'
He also faced questions over the show's odd knack for predicting real-life events, including an episode in which Lisa references a President Donald Trump years before he became POTUS.
'All the conspiracy theories are true,' joked Groening, who pretended that the creative team pulls its predictions out of a Marge Simpson-shaped wig that his team had brought on stage.
Groening and the team then proceeded to pull out a set of joke predictions including that the 'Statue of Liberty will be returned to France when no one in America can remember what the word 'liberty' means,' and 'electric cars will use a new energy source powered by a hatred of Elon Musk.'
In terms of the advice he'd give future animators, Groening first said 'do not let your mom throw away your comic book collection when you leave High School,' and secondly became emotional once more as he urged the crowd of young animators: 'Whatever you're working on, finish it. The world is full of half-finished pieces of animation, so finish it and get it out there.'
Groening was speaking on the second day of the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, which is being attended by all the big American studios. Groening labeled Annecy 'the best festival in the world, animation or otherwise.'

'Thundercats' (2011): The Complete Series Blu-Ray Review - Reboot Series Blazes An Entertaining New Path
The ThunderCats are back! A generation after becoming beloved animation icons, the mighty survivors of Thundera returned for a bold, new re-imagining that mixed the best of the past with the boldness of the new. After the destruction of the cat civilization of Thundera by the evil Mumm-Ra, young Prince Lion-O leads a small band of survivors to safety. As the threats of Mumm-Ra ring in their ears, these determined cats know what they must do: find the Book of Omens. Using his powerful Sword of Omens, Lion-O guides his friends, facing vicious foes and making fantastic new allies while racing towards a showdown with Mumm-Ra. Now all 26 episodes are available in 'sight beyond sight' 1080p HD on Blu-ray Disc as they were meant to be seen. So get ready to rip into the action with Lion-O, Tygra, Panthro, Snarf, Cheetara, Wily Kit, Wily Kat and hear the battle cry of 'ThunderCats Ho!' once again, for the very first time! For thoughts on Thundercats: The Complete Series, please check out my thoughts on No Streaming Required: Video Quality Thundercats looks pretty wonderful on Blu-Ray with its 1080p transfer in 1.78:1 originally released in 2014. The series consists of 26 episodes and is given two discs. Even with so many episodes packed on a disc, there is never a sense that the disc is struggling to hold everything, as compression artifacts are far from a common occurrence. While the streaming version on Hulu is also a good option, these Blu-Ray discs help refine the image even further by eliminating any unwanted compression artifacts or digital nuisances of that nature. There is the occasional odd animation anomaly or background banding, but deficiencies in the transfer are kept to a bare minimum. There is no visible damage or shortcoming that was spotted while checking out these episodes. Everything looks impeccably clear for a favorable viewing experience. Colors are exceptionally vibrant and bold throughout the entire run. The animation aesthetic lends itself to creative character outlines brought to life with firm lines, along with some very imaginative backgrounds that look lovely in high definition. Black levels tend to be very deep with no crush detected. This presentation treats the series well on Blu-Ray. Audio Quality The Blu-Ray set comes with a formidable DTS-HD 2.0 Master Audio track that serves the show well. Sound effects from action scenes and other kinetic moments provide a memorable force in the low end that is appreciated. The show deploys some effective environmental sounds that render well in the stereo mix. Dialogue is given the proper prominence in the track with a clear presentation in the center speaker that holds firm even when different environments are being engaged. Music is momentous without drowning out other important elements. This presentation delivers what you need for the experience, even if a full surround sound track may have buoyed things a bit. Optional English SDH subtitles are available. Special Features There are no special features provided on these discs. Final Thoughts Thundercats is a very entertaining update to the original series that brings more of a mature tone to the proceedings while doing its best to respect what came before it. Some characterization choices appear to be a bit misguided, but we largely appreciate the depth brought to the characters. The anime-inspired animation is gorgeous throughout the season, and the vocal performances add some gravitas to the material. It is not a perfect continuation, but it definitely deserved more than one season to grow. The Blu-Ray set from Warner Archive delivers in the A/V department, but it does not bring any supplemental features to the table. Fans of the franchise with an open mind should give this a shot. Recommended Thundercats: The Complete Series can be purchased directly through MovieZyng or various other online retailers Note: Images presented in this review are not reflective of the image quality of the Blu-Ray. Disclaimer: Warner Archive has supplied a copy of this disc free of charge for review purposes. All opinions in this review are the honest reactions of the author.

Wild Trailer for Netflix's Animated Dreamworld Adventure Comedy IN YOUR DREAMS — GeekTyrant
Netflix just dropped the trailer for In Your Dreams , a new animated comedy adventure that looks wonderfully weird. The movie follows two siblings who discover a mysterious book titled 'The Legend of the Sandman'. They are launched into a candy-colored, chaos-fueled dreamworld where pretty much anything goes, including a town made of breakfast food and that classic nightmare scenario where you're suddenly, awkwardly naked. Set perfectly to Eurythmics' 'Sweet Dreams,' the trailer plays like a mixtape of childhood imagination, sleepover fears, and sibling bonds. You've got zombie waffles, dream monsters, and a talking giraffe named Baloney Tony, voiced by Craig Robinson. The voice cast also includes Simu Liu, Cristin Milioti, Jolie Hoang-Rappaport, Elias Janssen, Omid Djalili, Gia Carides, SungWon Cho, and Zachary Noah Piser. Directed by Alex Woo and co-directed by Erik Benson, who also co-wrote the script from a story by Woo and Stanley Moore, the movie was produced by Timothy Hahn and Gregg Taylor, with music by John Debney and animation by Kuku Studios. At a recent Netflix panel, Woo opened up about the long road to making a 'dream movie' that actually works. 'Dreams have always fascinated me. A dream movie in the animated space has sort of been a white whale. I think every animation studio in the world has had a dream movie in development at some point over the last couple decades, but none of them have ever been made, because I think nobody could figure out how to give a dream movie stakes. 'I really wanted to make a movie that explores the question of: What do you do when your dreams actually don't come true? How do you find hope? How do you keep moving forward in life?' Robinson added: 'This script touches all of us. Everybody dreams. It is a love letter to our brothers and sisters. I have a younger brother and an older sister, so that was all real!' If the trailer is any indication, this one's going to be a heartfelt ride through the subconscious, with just enough weird to keep both kids and adults wide awake. The film is set to premiere November 14 on Netflix and it looks like a lot of fun!

DC Studios Is Finally Making a ‘Mister Miracle' Animated Series
Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios have announced that the next adult animated series will be Mister Miracle. According to Deadline, which initially broke the news, Mister Miracle comic book writer Tom King (who is also producing HBO's Lanterns TV series) will serve as the showrunner and executive producer of the animated series. While no release date or cast announcements were coupled with the Mister Miracle's announcement, the show, which follows the eponymous DC character, will be based on the award-winning 2017 comic book series, created by King and artist Mitch Gerads. According to the logline for the series, Scott Free (AKA Mister Miracle) is a renowned celebrity known best for being the greatest escape artist alive. His latest stunt is to see if he can escape death itself. Naturally, things go 'horribly wrong' in Scott's 'perfect life,' he's built with his big, strong warrior wife, Big Barda. That thing being a war between their home worlds of Apokolips and New Genesis thanks to Mister Miracle's adoptive father Darkseid (yikes) seemingly finally getting his hands on the Anti-Life Equation, a weapon granting him power to rule over the universe. 'As the mountains of bodies on both sides grow ever higher, only Mister Miracle can stop the slaughter and restore peace,' says the logline. 'But the terrible power of the Anti-Life Equation may already be at work in his own mind, warping his reality, exposing his long-buried pain, and shattering the fragile happiness he's found with the woman he loves. It continues: 'And so begins the odyssey of Scott Free, Mister Miracle: a harrowing, hilarious, heart wrenching journey across the pitfalls of the ordinary and extraordinary as the son of God raised by the devil tries to save his family, his world, and maybe even himself.' According to a press release from Warner Bros, Mister Miracle will serve as Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios' second adult animated series. The first of which (supposedly, barring the Harley Quinn Animated series) is Creature Commandos, whose second season is in production. In tandem with the announcement of Mister Miracle, DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation reaffirmed other recently greenlit animated series, including Starfire!, My Adventures with Green Lantern and DC Super Powers. While the news of a Mister Miracle series will come to many DC fans as a pleasant surprise, this isn't the first time DC has attempted to bring the comic book character to life. Back in 2018, DC announced director Ava DuVernay was set to direct a New Gods movie, which would've seen Barda and Miracle on the silver screen–a project that King was set to co-write on, but was ultimately scrapped in 2021. With DC Studios under James Gunn unveiling a revamped roadmap of sorts, featuring a new array of projects, Mister Miracle's return to the menu is a pleasant surprise for the ultimate wife guy's diehard fans.
