‘S.W.A.T.' Receives Spinoff After Multiple Cancellations — But Who From the Cast Is Returning?
S.W.A.T. has been picked up for a spinoff after multiple cancellations — and days after CBS aired the show's series finale — but which cast members are returning for the new iteration?
Sony announced on Sunday, May 18, that a new spinoff series starring Shemar Moore as Daniel "Hondo" Harrelson has been picked up. Sony Pictures Television will produce and distribute S.W.A.T. Exiles globally with development currently underway and production scheduled to start in Los Angeles this summer.
According to the official press release, the 10-episode series picks up after "a high-profile mission goes sideways, Daniel 'Hondo' Harrelson is pulled out of forced retirement to lead a last-chance experimental SWAT unit made up of untested, unpredictable young recruits." Moore's character must "bridge a generational divide, navigate clashing personalities, and turn a squad of outsiders into a team capable of protecting the city and saving the program that made him who he is."
Moore, 55, reflected on the decision to reprise his role, which comes two days after CBS aired the S.W.A.T. series finale.
Every TV Spinoff to (Hopefully) Look Forward to in 2025: From 'The Testaments' to 'The Madison'
'My eight seasons on S.W.A.T. have been epic and memorable. We entertained the world, defied the odds, came back from the dead twice, and continued to woo fans and families worldwide," the actor said. "I am excited for this next generation and iteration of S.W.A.T. with Sony. Katherine Pope, Neal H. Moritz, Jason Ning, and I will keep the franchise, thrill ride action, heartfelt drama, and storytelling of S.W.A.T. alive. WE DON'T LOSE!!!! ROLL SWAT!!!.'
Based on the 1975 TV show and 2003 film adaptation of the same name, S.W.A.T. centered around the Los Angeles Police Department. The CBS series premiered in 2017 and aired six seasons before it was picked up for a seventh and final run. CBS ultimately reversed that decision and S.W.A.T. returned for season 8. But the celebration didn't last long — the network canceled the show for a second time in March.
The last season of S.W.A.T. also starred Jay Harrington, David Lim, Patrick St. Esprit, Anna Enger Ritch, Annie Ilonzeh and Niko Pepaj, but there's no word yet on who could return for the spinoff.
Before news of S.W.A.T. Exiles broke, Ilonzeh spoke with Us Weekly about attempts to revive the series.

"We are crossing our fingers. So there is a particular discussion being had. I hope I can say [soon] that we really did it. We rallied for a third time," she shared in April. "But we're making noise. They do see it — producers and streamers that are interested — they are like, 'OK, this is something.' So if we can plug and play, we're all geared up to go. We don't want this ride to be over."
Despite fighting for S.W.A.T. to get a new home, it would be the show's last battle to stay on the air.
"I was just talking to [my costar] Shemar [Moore] yesterday and he was like, 'If we do this for a third time — whenever we do get canceled again — I will be OK with it. I'm not fighting for a fourth [time] because we really did it and we end on that,'" she noted. "We will end on the fight and the win and relish in all of this and squeeze the life out of it. We will know that we did it, we did our job and we can walk away happy campers."

Loretta Swit, Emmy-winner who played Maj. Houlihan on pioneering series 'M.A.S.H.,' has died at 87
Loretta Swit, who won two Emmy Awards playing Maj. Margaret Houlihan, the demanding head nurse of a behind-the-lines surgical unit during the Korean War on the pioneering hit TV series "M.A.S.H.," has died. She was 87. Publicist Harlan Boll says Swit died Friday at her home in New York City, likely from natural causes. Swit and Alan Alda were the longest-serving cast members on "M.A.S.H.," which was based on Robert Altman's 1970 film, which was itself based on a novel by Richard Hooker, the pseudonym of H. Richard Hornberger. The CBS show aired for 11 years from 1972 to 1983, revolving around life at the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital, which gave the show its name. The two-and-a-half-hour finale on Feb. 28, 1983, lured over 100 million viewers, the most-watched episode of any scripted series ever. Rolling Stone magazine put "M.A.S.H." at No. 25 of the best TV shows of all time, while Time Out put it at No. 34. It won the Impact Award at the 2009 TV Land annual awards. It won a Peabody Award in 1975 "for the depth of its humor and the manner in which comedy is used to lift the spirit and, as well, to offer a profound statement on the nature of war." In Altman's 1970 film, Houlihan was a one-dimensional character — a prickly, rules-bound head nurse who was regularly tormented by male colleagues, who gave her the nickname "Hot Lips." Her intimate moments were broadcast to the entire camp after somebody planted a microphone under her bed. Sally Kellerman played Houlihan in the movie version and Swit took it over for TV, eventually deepening and creating her into a much fuller character. Her sexuality was played down and she wasn't even called "Hot Lips" in the later years. The growing awareness of feminism in the '70s spurred Houlihan's transformation from caricature to real person, but a lot of the change was due to Swit's influence on the scriptwriters. "Around the second or third year I decided to try to play her as a real person, in an intelligent fashion, even if it meant hurting the jokes," Swit told Suzy Kalter, author of "The Complete Book of 'M.A.S.H.'" "To oversimplify it, I took each traumatic change that happened in her life and kept it. I didn't go into the next episode as if it were a different character in a different play. She was a character in constant flux; she never stopped developing." Alda praised Swit as a "supremely talented actor" in a post on X. "She worked hard In showing the writing staff how they could turn the character from a one joke sexist stereotype into a real person — with real feelings and ambitions. We celebrated the day the script came out listing her character not as Hot Lips, but as Margaret. Loretta made the most of her time here." "M.A.S.H." wasn't an instant hit. It finished its first season in 46th place, out of 75 network TV series, but it nabbed nine Emmy nominations. It was rewarded with a better time slot for its sophomore season, paired on Saturday nights with "All in the Family," then TV's highest-rated show. At the 1974 Emmys, it was crowned best comedy, with Alda winning as best comedy actor. The series also survived despite cast churn. In addition to Swit and Alda, the first season featured Wayne Rogers, McLean Stevenson, Larry Linville and Gary Burghoff. Harry Morgan, Mike Farrell and David Ogden Stiers would later be added, while Jamie Farr and William Christopher had expanded roles. "Loretta Swit's portrayal of Margaret 'Hot Lips' Houlihan was groundbreaking — bringing heart, humor, and strength to one of television comedy's most enduring roles. Her talent extended well beyond that iconic character, with acclaimed work on both stage and screen that showcased her intelligence, versatility, and passion," National Comedy Center Executive Director Journey Gunderson said in a statement. Swit appeared in all but 11 episodes of the series, nearly four times longer than the Korean War itself, exploring issues like PTSD, sexism and racism. Swit pushed for a better representation for women. "One of the things I liked, with Loretta's prodding, was every time I had a chance to write for her character, we'd get away from the Hot Lips angle and find out more about who Margaret was. She became more of a real person," Alda told The Hollywood Reporter in 2018. The series ended on a happy note for Houlihan, who spends much of the finale debating whether she wants to head to Tokyo or Belgium for her next overseas post. Ultimately she opts to return to America and work at a hospital, citing her father — a career Army man. Swit didn't personally agree that was the correct decision for a military-minded official: "I didn't think that was correct for my Margaret," she told Yahoo Entertainment in 2023. "I think her next move was Vietnam. So I didn't agree with that, but that's what they wanted her to do." But the actor did get to write the speech that Houlihan delivers to her fellow nurses on their final night together, in which she says: "It's been an honor and privilege to have worked with you. And I'm very, very proud to have known you." "I was consumed with writing that. And I still get letters from women all over the world who became nurses because of Margaret Houlihan. To have contributed to someone's life like that is remarkable," she told Yahoo Entertainment. During her run, Houlihan had an affair with Hawkeye's foil, the bumbling Frank Burns, played by Linville in the TV version, and in Season 5, Houlihan returns from a stay in Tokyo engaged to a handsome lieutenant colonel, a storyline that Swit says she advocated for with the writers. "I told them: 'Can you imagine what fun you're going to have with Larry when I come back to town and I tell him I'm engaged? He'll rip the doors off of the mess tent!' And that's exactly what they had him do. So we were all of the same mind." Toward the end, Swit was tempted to leave the show. She played the role of Chris Cagney in a 1981 television movie, "Cagney & Lacey," and was offered the part when it was picked up as a midseason series for the spring of 1982. But producers insisted she stay with "M.A.S.H." for its last two seasons. Swit told The Florida Times-Union in 2010 she might have stayed with "M.A.S.H." anyway. "You can't help but get better as an actor working with scripts like that," she said. "If you're in something that literate, well, we got spoiled." In 2022, James Poniewozik, The New York Times's chief television critic, looked back on the show and said it held up well: "Its blend of madcap comedy and pitch-dark drama — the laughs amplifying the serious stakes, and vice versa — is recognizable in today's dramedies, from 'Better Things' to 'Barry,' that work in the DMZ between laughter and sadness." After the TV series, Swit became a vocal animal welfare activist, selling SwitHeart perfume and her memoir through her official website, with proceeds benefiting various animal-related nonprofit groups. In 1983, she married actor Dennis Holahan, whom she'd met when he was a guest star on "M.A.S.H." They divorced in 1995. Born in Passaic, New Jersey, the daughter of Polish immigrants, Swit enrolled in the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, then paid her dues for years in touring productions. In 1969, she arrived in Hollywood and was soon seen in series such as "Gunsmoke," "Hawaii Five-O," "Mission Impossible" and "Bonanza." Then in 1972, she got her big break when she was asked to audition for the role of "Hot Lips." She would regularly return to theater, starring on Broadway in 1975 in "Same Time, Next Year" and "The Mystery of Edwin Drood" in 1986. She was in "Amorous Crossing," a romantic comedy, at Alhambra Theatre & Dining in 2010 and in North Carolina Theatre's production of "Mame" in 2003.

‘Captain America' Star Chris Evans Puts L.A. Home on the Market for $7 Million as He Quits California To Move Back to East Coast
'Captain America' star Chris Evans is bidding farewell to his longtime Los Angeles home as he prepares to trade California living for a life on the East Coast in order to be closer to his family. The 43-year-old 'Avengers' icon—who married Alba Baptista in 2023—has listed his four-bedroom, 5.5-bathroom dwelling for $6.99 million, almost double the $3.52 million he paid for it back in 2013. According to listing agent Scott Moore, of Christie's International Real Estate Southern California, Evans, who hails from Massachusetts, has chosen to part ways with the 1940s-era property because he wants to relocate back to the East Coast so he can live near his family members. 'After over a decade of amazing memories in his L.A. home, Chris is planning to move to the East Coast to be closer to family,' Moore said in a statement to People. In addition to an open floor plan, the property offers sweeping views of the Santa Monica Mountains and Mulholland and Laurel Canyons, which the actor told the Wall Street Journal are what first drew him to the 'stunning and inspiring' abode. He added, 'A lot of personal touches went on inside to home to embrace the views and bring warmth. On the outside, I have extended the backyard, brought in a lot of complementary landscaping that has enhanced the beauty of the view and made the yard into an entertainer's paradise.' On the outside of the home, Evans has added two patio chairs that overlook the mountains and California's gorgeous skyline and the abode's large pool. Upon entering the home, guests are greeted with an expansive living area that comes complete with a large TV, a cozy fireplace, comfortable white lounge chairs, and a piano. Moore revealed that some of the furniture inside the home are negotiable within the sale, giving fans a chance to own some of the actor's favorite things. 'Inside, sophisticated interiors by Stewart-Gulrajani merge architectural elements with contemporary style,' the listing notes. 'Dramatic vaulted open-beamed ceilings, expansive picture windows, and refined finishes define generous living spaces, from the grand fireplace-centered living room to the spacious dining area complete with a sleek wet bar. 'Thoughtfully engineered to enhance both form and function, the home showcases expertly crafted retaining walls that maximize the usable pad area of this hillside estate, reflecting a meticulous attention to detail and a true mastery of design.' Adjacent to the living area, there is a dining room with a large table. The chef's kitchen boasts a large overhead fan, a marble island, wooden cabinets, and state-of-the-art appliances. 'At the home's heart is a gourmet kitchen, illuminated naturally by skylights and appointed with commercial-grade appliances, including a 60-inch Wolf range with 10-foot custom hood, Sub-Zero refrigeration, dual Thermador dishwashers, a sizable wine fridge, custom cabinetry with Bianca Marble countertops, and a built-in Miele coffee maker,' the listing adds. The master bedroom boasts multiple glass French doors that open up to a charming patio area. The bathroom features a double vanity, a soaking tub, and a large glass shower. The private gym is located in the home's dwelling unit, which comes complete with a bedroom and kitchen. The home offers superfans the chance to own an 'iconic celebrity estate' that 'embodies the spirit of Hollywood Hills' most legendary neighborhoods.' Evans purchased the home two years after he made his debut as the legendary Marvel character, Captain America, and he is understood to have used the gym inside the dwelling to remain in tip top shape as he continued his on-screen appearances as the superhero over the next 10 years. During that time, the actor has appeared in 11 Marvel movies, before handing over the character's iconic shield to his successor, Anthony Mackie, at the start of 2025. In 2023, Evans explained his decision to walk away from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, saying that he would 'never say never' about returning to the franchise, but that he ultimately stepped down as Captain America out of a desire to spend less time focusing on his on-screen work. 'I'll never say never, just because it was such a wonderful experience,' he told GQ. 'But I'm also very precious with it. It's something that I am very proud of. And like I said, sometimes I can't believe it even happened. 'And I wouldn't want the black eye if it felt like a cash grab or if it didn't live up to expectations or if it just felt like it wasn't connected to that original thing. So, no time soon. And ultimately I really hope to just maybe act a little bit less in my life.'
