Boosting non-oil revenues: Iraqi PM orders state-owned enterprises overhaul
Shafaq News/ On Sunday, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani chaired a high-level meeting of the Higher Committee for the Restructuring of State-Owned Enterprises, issuing directives to classify state-owned enterprises and accelerate financial and administrative reforms.
According to a statement from his office, the committee reviewed its core agenda, which includes revitalizing Iraq's non-oil revenues, restructuring public sector companies, and assessing previous reform decisions. The meeting focused on aligning public enterprise management with sound economic principles to improve performance, secure employee rights, and strengthen the state treasury.
The committee approved several key recommendations, including the establishment of a new entity named the General Company for Construction, Supplies, and Scientific Investments. It also endorsed a reclassification plan for selected public companies and adopted recommendations stemming from the Global Investor Day Conference.
Additionally, the committee approved a new economic policy paper and endorsed guidelines for fuel allocation for public companies, based on reports from its subcommittees tasked with classification and reform oversight.

Iraq's Defense Committee backs Global Coalition presence

The statement follows ongoing discussions between Baghdad and Washington through the Joint Higher Military Commission, established in 2023 to define the future of the US military presence in Iraq. In early 2020, Iraq's parliament voted to require the government to establish a timetable for ending foreign military presence, following the US strike that killed Quds Force commander Qassem Soleimani and Popular Mobilization Forces deputy chief Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis near Baghdad International Airport. US forces in Iraq are currently stationed at several bases, including Ain al-Asad in Al-Anbar and Harir in Erbil. Around 2,500 American troops remain in the country, focused on combating ISIS remnants and providing logistical support to Iraqi forces under the Global Coalition.

During the event, the Prime Minister planted a tree in the university's garden as a symbolic gesture in support of the initiative. Emphasizing that over 60 percent of Iraq's population is under the age of 30, he stated that this demographic strength must be mobilised to meet environmental and developmental challenges. In his speech, Al-Sudani stressed that protecting the environment is a collective responsibility-not limited to the government-and urged the expansion of youth-led voluntary environmental activities. Key initiatives highlighted include: Launch of The Al-Khair Initiative to empower youth in agriculture, food security, and climate action. Formation of a National Youth Climate Action Team with 1,000 members across all provinces. Government backing for major environmental conferences, including the Carbon Economics Conference (Baghdad) and the Iraq Climate Conference (Basra). New regulations on pollution sources and transformation of industrial plants into eco-friendly facilities. Expansion of afforestation efforts using modern agricultural spraying technology. Launch of a Waste-to-Energy Power Plant Project in Al-Nahrawan (100 MW capacity). Upgrades to wastewater treatment systems on the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. Signing of water cooperation agreements with Türkiye to implement modern water management systems. Commitment to end gas flaring by 2027, supported by international contracts and investment. Adoption of the National Initiative for Environmental Monitoring and Inspection. Increased investment in scientific research, emission reduction, and natural area protection. Tehran claims spy operation targeting Israeli nuclear sites
Shafaq News/ Iran's intelligence services have reportedly obtained a large cache of sensitive Israeli documents, including files allegedly linked to nuclear and defense infrastructure, according to state broadcaster IRIB on Saturday. The report claimed that thousands of documents—comprising written files, images, and videos—were extracted from Israeli territory during a covert operation carried out 'some time ago.' Iranian officials did not provide evidence to support the allegations, but emphasized that the volume of material was 'so extensive that the process of reviewing and verifying their contents is still ongoing.' IRIB attributed the operation to Iran's intelligence apparatus and linked it to the May arrest of two Israeli citizens, Roy Mizrahi and Almog Atias, both 24 and residents of Nesher near Haifa. According to Israeli authorities, the two were detained on suspicion of collecting intelligence on behalf of Iran following a joint investigation by the Shin Bet and Israel Police's Lahav 433 unit. Israeli officials have not directly responded to the Iranian claims regarding the intelligence haul. However, at the time of the arrests, security authorities described the case as part of 'a series of recent incidents' involving efforts by Iranian intelligence services to recruit Israeli citizens for espionage activities, the Times of Israel reported.
