‘CSIR's role in spearheading research will help India compete with developed nations'

The Hindu25-07-2025
The Council of Scientific & Industrial Research's (CSIR) role in spearheading research in various fields would enable the country to compete with other developed countries, said N. Kalaiselvi, Director General, CSIR, and Secretary, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, New Delhi.
Participating in the 78th foundation day of CSIR-Central Electrochemical Research Institute (CSIR-CECRI) and inauguration of Sir C.V. Raman Research Scholars' Hostel and CO2-adsorbent pilot plant facility here on Friday, she advised research scholars to align their research towards technology and urged scientists to work towards CSIR@100 and Viksit Bharat 2047 goals.
'Our country is growing exponentially as the world's largest economy and to realise this remarkable goal, we all should dedicate ourselves to the development of the nation,' she said, adding the institution was working towards growth in fields such as food, water, sanitation, security, and energy.
'In the field of health, sickle cell anaemia among tribals is rampant. As it is particularly prevalent among tribals in Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and Maharashtra, we have started the research towards curing that,' she added.
As the research to remove oxygen-deficient cells which play a major role in the disease was being done for more than eight years, the first step in identification using a simplified technique was developed now, Ms. Kalaiselvi said.
The PCR test, through which the disease could be identified in 20 minutes, would soon be made available on a government e-marketplace platform, she noted.
The research in genome sequencing and editing to remove the affected gene, if done successfully, could be done at ₹1 crore in India whereas the treatment would cost around ₹28 crore in the USA, Ms. Kalaiselvi said.
The main aim of the research was to reduce the treatment cost to ₹50 lakh to cover it under Prime Minister's Health Insurance Scheme, she added.
The CSIR's initiative to support fisherwomen in Rameswaram by providing them seaweed had made them economically independent. The research being done by the team to see if the seaweed growth could happen in controlled waterbody condition in houses and farms, it could further empower the women, the CSIR DG said.
She urged the researchers to innovate more and translate their ideas into entrepreneurships, startups, MSMEs, etc., as their products contributed around 40% of India's total exports.
Alok Sharma, Director (R&D), IOCL, assured continued support of IOCL to the CSIR-CECRI and solicited collaboration of all CSIR Labs, especially CSIR-CECRI, in energy generation and storage.

OU holds awareness programme on preventing drug abuse

Hyderabad: The University College of Arts & Social Sciences (UCA&SS) at Osmania University, together with National Service Scheme (NSS) Unit-I, on Tuesday, organized a one-day awareness program on 'Drug Abuse Prevention.' The event was effectively coordinated by Dr. Chalamalla Venkateshwarlu and Dr. Shivanand Yalala, the NSS Programme Officers. It highlighted the core objectives and responsibilities of the NSS, emphasizing its significance in nation-building. The program saw enthusiastic participation from numerous students and faculty members, who engaged in meaningful discussions and gained insights into the dangers of drug addiction. Prof. C. Kaseem, Principal of UCA&SS, attended the event as the Chief Guest. In his address, Prof. Kaseem emphasized the harmful effects of drug abuse on youth and highlighted the importance of responsible behavior. He urged everyone to work collectively to combat this issue and foster a healthier society. Prof. E. Vidyasagar, NSS Programme Coordinator at Osmania University and Guest of Honour, spoke about the vision of 'Viksit Bharat 2047' and the critical role youth participation through NSS will play in achieving this goal. As India moves toward 2047, the energy, vision, and spirit of service of NSS volunteers will be essential in realizing the dream of a developed India. Every NSS activity—large or small—contributes to building a stronger, more inclusive, and prosperous nation. Dr. Konda Nageswara Rao, Vice-Principal, also addressed the audience and elaborated on the responsibilities of youth in fostering a socially conscious society. The program featured special addresses from key speakers, including Sudhakar Sripada, State Coordinator of SLCA; Madhusudan Reddy, Director (Programs) at the National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction, MSJE, Government of India, and De-Addiction Program, Council for Urban and Rural Enhancement, Hyderabad; and Rathod Govind Singh Nayak, Inspector of Drugs, Drugs Control Administration, Hyderabad District. Requests for feedback submission will soon go out to all central ministries, autonomous bodies as well as state governments, officials at the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology in October 2023, the first IndiaAI report had laid out the full fulcrum of India's AI aspirations, with detailed inputs from seven working groups. These had recommended the setting up of 3 AI centres of excellence, development of large, multimodal AI foundation models trained on Indian languages and datasets, and driving cross-sector development in areas like health, agriculture, education and governance through AI."The previous report had laid out the foundational strategy and roadmap for India's national approach to artificial intelligence. The next one is planned to build on it to further fine tune targets to meet the goals under the Viksit Bharat 2047 initiative," an official the approval of the IndiaAI Mission, the government had allocated Rs 10,300 crore over five years beginning March 2024 to strengthen AI capabilities. The upcoming report may call for augmenting that amount considering the central position that AI has acquired in innovation and governance since then, he government wants solutions to emerge for large-scale re-skilling of the technological workforce, much of which in India's IT industry remains anxious of retrenchments due to AI. Similar to last time, senior executives from the private sector and academicians are expected to be part of the working groups that will give recommendations for the computing power would also be a key focus, people in the know said. While the government had initially targeted the development of a high-end common computing facility equipped with 10,000 graphics processing units (GPUs), India has successfully overshot the mark by empanelling 34,333 GPUs through the IndiaAI Compute platform . But the government is wary of export controls on critical hardware being placed by foreign governments, specifically the the previous Joe Biden administration's Artificial Intelligence Diffusion Framework, the US had placed India among Tier-2 countries with a volume cap of 50,000 H100-equivalent GPUs through 2027. Under Donald Trump, US' new AI policy has called for exporting the full US AI technology stack to 'allied nations' willing to join America's AI alliance, but also stresses on denying foreign adversaries access to US compute power citing geostrategic competition and national security. These two categories are not defined, and India would need to quickly find its feet, an official said."This and other geopolitical challenges such as the rapidly evolving AI power dynamics beyond nations have pushed the government to hold the summit in India next year,' this official said.
