Maddox Schultz notches second hat trick to lead Regina Pat Canadians to third straight win at Telus Cup
Maddox Schultz notched his second hat trick of the Telus Cup to keep the Regina Pat Canadians undefeated record intact through three days in Chilliwack, B.C.
Following wins over the host Fraser Valley Thunderbirds and Atlantic champion Moncton Flyers in the opening two days of the national male under-18 AAA hockey championship, the West regional champion Pat Canadians improved to 3-0 with a 6-2 win on Wednesday over Ontario's Elgin Middlesex Canucks, who are representing the Central region.
Schultz, the tournament's leading scorer, got things going for Regina with a goal in the first period before adding his second of the game in the second period to make it 2-0.
Regina then extended its lead as Jonah Sivertson found the back of the net on the powerplay, drawing assists from Schultz and Eli Johnson to make it 3-0.
The Pat C's then increased their lead to 5-0 as Sivertson scored his second of the game before Reid Bechard scored 29 seconds later.
The Canucks got on the board shortly after that as Josh Myatt scored before Lucas Can Steensel added a goal in the third period to cut the lead to 5-2.
Schultz would then put the game to bed minutes later with his third goal of the day — and second hat trick of the tournament — while Pat C's goalie Adam Muntain made the final of his 30 saves for his first win.
The 15-year-old Schultz (three goals, one assist) and Johnson (four assists) each had four points for the Pat Canadians while Sivertson (two goals, one assist) had three to lead Regina to a third straight victory while Elgin Middlesex dropped to 1-2.
On Thursday, the No. 2 ranked Pat Canadians will be back in action against the Pacific champion Okanagan Rockets at 12 p.m. before taking on Quebec's Chevaliers de Levis, the No. 1 ranked team, on Friday at 12 p.m. to wrap up the round robin.
The top four teams in the six-team event will advance to the semifinals on Saturday (1 p.m. and 5 p.m.) with the winners advancing to Sunday's gold medal final, which is set for 4 p.m. The semifinal losers will play for bronze at 12 p.m. on Sunday.
The Pat Canadians, who are appearing in their first Telus Cup since 2017 when they finished fourth, have won the national tournament four times (1983, 1988, 1994 and 1999).

Cowboys TE looking to bounce back from historically horrible to new $70 million contract
When Jake Ferguson was taken in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL draft, the expectations were clear. The Dallas Cowboys were looking to replace Dalton Schultz, who was entering a franchise tag season. The Cowboys clearly weren't interested in investing too heavily in Schultz, and after he turned down their offer the landscape had been agreed upon. Ferguson joined the club and initially appeared ready to reward the Cowboys for their vision at the position. By his second season he had emerged as a Pro Bowler and favorite target of quarterback Dak Prescott. However things fell apart in Years 3, and Ferguson was unable to handle the role of Cowboys' No. 2 weapon as there was no viable threat on the outside opposite CeeDee Lamb. The increased defensive scrutiny led Ferguson to turn in the worst statistical season in NFL history. Now, he'll look to not only bounce back in 2025, but prove last year was the fluke, not his 2023 campaign. Position: Tight End Age: 26 Height: 6-foot-5 Weight: 244 pounds Hometown: Madison, WI High School: Phillips Memorial (WI) College: Wisconsin (Highlight Video) Draft: 2022 Fourth round Contract: Four-year deal (2022), $4.4 million 2025 Base Salary: $3.4 million Career Earnings: $3.3 million (per Over The Cap) Ferguson should have a lot less attention paid to him now that George Pickens is on the roster. Part of the reason he slumped so badly was because defenses could apply bracket coverage and he's not athletically capable of beating double teams. He is capable however of beating single coverage. As far as roster competition, the Cowboys followed up his rookie campaign by drafting Luke Schoonmaker out of Michigan in the 2023 second round. He hasn't developed into a starter after two years, but did show some signs of life, so there will be an opportunity given to him to emerge as TE1. Ferguson will also have a ton of UDFA competition (Brevyn Spann-Ford, Princeton Fant, John Stephens, Rivaldo Fairweather, Tyler Neville) behind him; none of them look ready for a huge role but this is before training camp. If Ferguson emerges with the role, he has a chance to earn a new contract, whether still in Dallas or elsewhere. The market was most recently set by Trey McBride. The two had relatively similar stats through their first two years, but went in totally different directions in Year 3. Ferguson went from 90 catches for 930 yards and seven touchdowns in two seasons to just 59 catches for 494 yards and no scores in Year 3. McBride went from 110 catches for 1090 yards in two seasons and then exploded in Year 3 for 111 receptions for 1,146 yards in 2024. The Cardinals rewarded him with a four-year, $76 million extension. Ferguson can only hope to achieve such a lofty contract, but before even thinking about avoiding the franchise tag fate that befell Schultz, he'll have to fight off the competition. Cornes, Dillon apologise to umpires over Schultz saga
The four umpires caught in the Lachie Schultz concussion saga have had apologies from AFL chief executive Andrew Dillon and commentator Kane Cornes. It's emerged that Dillon had a phone hook up on Wednesday with the four field umpires. On Thursday afternoon, Cornes read a statement on SEN and apologised "unreservedly" for his comments at the time. The AFL last month admitted a process "failed", compounding the debacle around the on-field mishandling of Schultz's concussion. The Collingwood forward was hurt in the round-10 win over Fremantle on May 8 in Perth. An awful collision sees Lachie Schultz in real trouble, but play continues and the Pies extend their lead. 📺 Watch #AFLFreoPies LIVE on ch. 504 or stream on Kayo: BLOG MATCH CENTRE — Fox Footy (@FOXFOOTY) May 8, 2025 The AFL was slammed for bungling an investigation into why Schultz wasn't removed from the field, despite clearly being in trouble following a collision with Fremantle defender Jordan Clark. AFL football boss Laura Kane eventually took responsibility after becoming aware umpires had actually noticed Schultz was injured. The AFL initially released a statement saying umpires didn't see Schultz on the ground, but would have stopped play had they realised. Then, the league sent out another statement, saying there had been an initial miscommunication. In the midst of the saga, Cornes had made on-air comments accusing the umpires of misleading the AFL. "I accused field umpires who were officiating that round nine match between Fremantle and Collingwood of misleading the AFL, and that they had not seen the incident in which Collingwood's Lachie Schultz suffered a concussion," Cornes said. "Now in light of the additional (AFL) statement, which made it clear that the umpires had not misled the AFL, I acknowledge that the allegations made by me on this show were false, and I withdraw them," Cornes said. "I understand the umpires truthfully told the AFL that they saw the incident and did not mislead the AFL. So I unreservedly apologise." There had been speculation that the umpires involved were considering their legal options over the saga.

Report: Steelers in trade talks with multiple teams to acquire WR opposite DK Metcalf
The Steelers trade news and rumors keep on rolling — as a prominent insider reported that Pittsburgh has been in negotiations with teams in hopes of adding more threats on offense. Insider Adam Schefter reported that the Steelers and Dolphins held trade talks regarding Pro Bowl TE Jonnu Smith — while insider Jordan Schultz dropped an even bigger bombshell just a few hours later. Advertisement According to Schultz, the Steelers want to acquire a talented pass catcher to pair with WR1 DK Metcalf — and have been in contact with multiple NFL teams in hopes of making it a reality, per multiple sources. He also claimed there is confidence in the Steel City that it's a matter of when, not if: "Pittsburgh is believed to be motivated to get a deal done at some point, though there's still plenty of time before the season." There are a plethora of trade targets the Steelers could pursue, such as Jets WR Allen Lazard, Saints WR Chris Olave, Dolphins WR Tyreek Hill, or Packers WR Romeo Doubs — but it remains to be seen which players Schultz was referencing.
