Visva-Bharati to start Sun guided walks in Santiniketan heritage zone

Time of India03-06-2025
Kolkata: Visva-Bharati (VB) is set to introduce Sunday guided walking tours of the core heritage zone — the Ashrama area of Santiniketan — for tourists, probably from July. The Ashrama complex, which accommodates tourist attractions like the Upasana Griha, Santiniketan Griha, Patha Bhavana, Chhatimtala, Dinantika, Gour Prangan, Cheena Bhavana, Hindi Bhavana and other heritage structures, was restricted to tourists since the pandemic.

The newly appointed vice-chancellor, Probir Kumar Ghosh, in March announced that the Ashrama area will be made accessible to the public in a controlled manner to strike a "balance between heritage conservation and tourist access."
Sources said the decision to conduct heritage walks was taken at a high-level meeting in May. An official shared that the university was planning to introduce guided walking tours after the summer vacation ends.
"The guided tour will be conducted on Sundays in slots comprising nearly 25 visitors. Tourists can avail themselves of the facility of online booking to book slots for the heritage walk, which will be provided by trained guides," said VB public relations officer Atig Ghosh.
The heritage walks will provide tourists a glimpse of the Upasana Griha (the glass temple), the Chhatimtala, the Santiniketan Griha, which is the oldest house on the campus and was bought by Maharshi Debendranath Tagore in 1862 from a local zamindar, the Patha Bhavana, the school founded by Rabindranath Tagore for children, the Cheena Bhavana, the Hindi Bhavana, the octagonal two-storey structure Dinantika, the Singha-Sadan, with its iconic clock tower and bell, and other heritage structures.
"It is still under consideration whether tourists can visit Sangeet Bhavana and Kala Bhavana," said Ghosh.
An official added: "Young VB employees and students will be given training for conducting the tours. The heritage walks will be conducted in three languages — Bengali, English, and Hindi. Initially, we will be starting as a trial run and expand it depending on the response of visitors. There is also a plan to introduce light and sound shows."

While the Ashrama area was restricted to public access even after the pandemic, the Uttarayan Complex (housing the Rabindra Bhavana, the residences of Tagore, ) is fully accessible to the general public on all days of the week, except Wednesdays and Thursdays.

MakeMyTrip launches multilingual GenAI Trip Planning Assistant, making travel booking conversational and inclusive

MakeMyTrip has launched a GenAI-enabled Trip Planning Assistant, that will assist users at every stage of travel planning, from discovery to fulfilment, and beyond, the company said on Thursday. The company said users would find conversational assistance through their entire journey, from destination-discovery, shopping, in-trip, and post-sales scenarios. MakeMyTrip said the new GenAI Trip Planning Assistant is a notable upgrade to the existing AI agent, Myra, and will make the experience 'seamless' and 'conversational', enabling travellers to interact via voice and text. The company said this will ensure that users across India who have previously been unable to book due to discomfort with the English language, will now be able to do so. The Beta version of Myra is now live in English and Hindi, and the company plans to expand this to multiple Indian languages. MakeMyTrip said the GenAI Trip Planning Assistant, Myra, is built on a network of specialised AI agents across all major travel categories, flights, accommodation, holidays, ground transport, visas, and forex. It supports multimodal input (text, voice, image, video), continuous back-and-forth dialogue, itinerary edits, and post-sales support—all within the same interface. Users can ask complex and open-ended queries in the realm of travel in Hindi or English like "Where can I go in August for a relaxing holiday with my kids? Or "I want to go to south India to cover Madurai, Rameswaram, Kovalam, Kodaikanal. Can you suggest me the best route? I don't want to travel via flight' and receive personalised responses based on real-time availability, pricing, and relevance. The company said multiple AI platforms globally stop at suggestions, but Myra is taking a course that hasn't been attempted before by bridging the gap between inspiration and actual booking, letting users move from query to confirmed booking in one conversational journey built on voice end-to-end. Rajesh Magow, Co-Founder and Group CEO, MakeMyTrip said by enabling access initially in Hindi, and expanding to multiple Indian languages soon, this launch has the potential to solve for the 'Bharat' heartland, reaching the deepest corners, and bringing intelligent travel booking to those who've long been underserved by digital platforms. "It brings together the full strength of our platform, including customer preferences data, supply, user-generated content, personalization, and real-time intelligence, to power the next era of travel: connected journeys that intuitively adapt to each traveller's needs, from start to finish," he added. Sanjay Mohan, group CTO at MakeMyTrip said the company's in-house team has developed custom language models and layered them with planning, scheduling, and verification systems that work in sync and respond in real time. "The result is a multi-agent AI framework that collaborates across categories to deliver a seamless experience. The system is currently in beta, allowing us to learn from real interactions and continue strengthening it,' he added. In 2023, MakeMyTrip became one of the first travel platforms to integrate GenAI into its core booking experience. This early investment in AI builds on a broader track record of using technology to solve real-world traveller challenges. Over the years, the platform has introduced features such as Fare Lock, Zero Cancellation, voice-led customer support, and, recently, predictive tools for train bookings. The company said the next phase of development will introduce 'richer' semantic search capabilities, AI-driven use cases on images & videos, enabling users to move beyond structured filters and interact through more abstract, intent-led queries.

MakeMyTrip launches ChatGPT-like AI bot to help you plan your vacations

MakeMyTrip has launched a generative AI-based trip planning assistant, expanding its existing capabilities to include support for conversational travel booking in English and Hindi. The assistant, called Myra, aims to support users through the entire travel journey, from destination discovery to post-sales support. MakeMyTrip Myra assistant is designed to handle planning, recommendations, and bookings within the same interaction. The new assistant builds on the company's existing AI infrastructure and introduces voice and text-based inputs to allow users to interact in multiple Indian languages. The beta version currently supports English and Hindi, with plans to expand language coverage after evaluating early user feedback. Myra allows users to ask detailed queries such as 'Where can I go in August for a relaxing holiday with my kids?' or 'Mujhe Udaipur mein 3-star hotel 3500 ke budget mein chahiye,' and receive dynamic responses based on real-time inventory and pricing. According to the company, the assistant is designed to handle planning, recommendations, and bookings within the same interaction. The platform supports text, voice, image, and video inputs, and can handle itinerary changes, route planning, and post-booking customer support across categories including flights, hotels, holidays, transport, visas, and forex. Rajesh Magow, Co-Founder and Group CEO of MakeMyTrip, said the company is expanding digital access to a wider user base by enabling Hindi and other Indian languages. He added that the system integrates various layers of data, including user preferences and supply-side inventory, to create a seamless booking experience. Sanjay Mohan, Group CTO of MakeMyTrip, said the new system is built using a network of specialised AI agents and custom language models developed in-house. He described the framework as capable of working across categories in real time, allowing for interaction and coordination between different service verticals within a single session. MakeMyTrip first incorporated GenAI features into its core platform in 2023. The latest update is part of its broader AI integration strategy, which includes tools such as predictive train booking, voice-based customer support, and price protection features. The company plans to expand the assistant's capabilities to include semantic search and AI-powered interaction with image and video content in future updates.

Travel aggregator MakeMyTrip targets 'Bharat' with GenAI travel assistant

Travel aggregator MakeMyTrip is looking to bring new customers from 'Bharat' into its fold, it said on Thursday during the launch of its new generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) chat-based trip planning assistant. An upgrade to its existing AI agent, Myra, the new version will help users at every stage of travel planning — from discovery to fulfilment, and post-sales assistance. 'India has nearly a billion internet users, but there continues to be a huge gap between them and people buying travel services online. This update, which enables users to seamlessly interact with the AI assistant via voice and text, will bring more users — particularly from Bharat — into the ambit of the online travel buying experience,' said Rajesh Magow, co-founder and group chief executive officer at MakeMyTrip. To help bridge this gap, the beta version of Myra is available in English and Hindi. 'But we have plans to soon expand this offering to other regional languages,' Magow added. 'We have been investing in artificial intelligence (AI) since 2017 and have seen its benefits — how it helps create more personalised and relevant search options for users. GenAI definitely poses a huge potential for travel,' he further said. The GenAI assistant is built on a network of specialised AI agents across all major travel categories — flights, accommodation, holidays, ground transport, visas, and foreign exchange — while supporting multimodal input (text, voice, image, video), continuous back-and-forth dialogue, itinerary edits, and post-sales support, all within the same interface. The online travel agency (OTA) recently reported its first quarter results for the financial year 2026 (Q1FY26), with an 11 per cent year-on-year (Y-o-Y) uptick in net profit to $49,429 from $44,523, while its revenue from operations grew 5.6 per cent Y-o-Y to $268,846.
