
Sea search underway for missing fisherman after early morning fire guts boat near Kuala Kurau
IPOH, June 17 — A fisherman gone missing is feared to have drowned after the boat he was on with two other fishermen caught fire about 8.6 nautical miles east of Tanjung Piandang, Kuala Kurau yesterday.
Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Kuala Kurau Zone director Maritime Commander Mohd Hairil Othman said all three fishermen on board jumped into the sea to save themselves in the fire that broke out at about 4 am yesterday.
He said only two fishermen were rescued while the other who is also the owner of the boat, identified as Cheah Chai Pun, 33, has yet to be found.
'The fire started in the engine section of the boat. It was extinguished by firefighters as soon as the boat was towed to the Tanjung Piandang jetty,' he said in a statement last night.
Mohd Hairil said his MMEA team have activated a search and rescue operation in collaboration with various agencies and the local maritime community, which was also mobilised to help channel information and provide logistical support.
MMEA also calls on the public or fishing community who have any new leads to assist the search by channelling information at 011-3525 9919 or the Kuala Kurau maritime zone office at 05-727 9919.
The search operation for the solitary victim would continue tomorrow morning as it was called off at nightfall today. — Bernama

KOTA TINGGI, June 17 — A 33-year-old private football coach pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court here today to four charges of sexually assaulting two teenage female students at different locations in the district. The accused, Meor Azizi Zolkfle, entered his plea after the charges were read before Judge Haydar Faridzal Abu Hasan. According to the first and second charges, Meor Azizi is accused of touching the thigh and groping the breasts of a 13-year-old girl for sexual purposes at Bandar Penawar Stadium around 9.20pm on May 2. For the third and fourth charges, he allegedly touched the breasts, right thigh, back, and stomach of another 13-year-old girl. The incidents purportedly occurred at a sports centre and in front of a national school field in Felda Sening on November 14 and May 2. The charges fall under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, read with Section 16(1) of the same Act. Section 14(a) provides for a jail term of up to 20 years and whipping upon conviction. Section 16(1) prescribes an additional penalty of imprisonment for up to five years and at least two strokes of the cane. Deputy Public Prosecutor Fong Fang Leong represented the prosecution, while the accused was unrepresented. In his appeal, Meor Azizi requested a reduction in bail, citing his RM2,000 monthly income and responsibility for supporting two children. The court granted bail at RM20,000 for all charges, with the condition that the accused reports to the Taman Bayu Damai police station once a month. He was also prohibited from harassing the victims and witnesses. Judge Haydar Faridzal set July 17 for mention and the submission of documents, as well as the appointment of counsel for the accused. Dressed in a blue top and dark blue track bottoms, Meor Azizi was seen in tears after the proceedings. He was later escorted out of the courtroom by police officers.

Three-year-old girl found drowned in irrigation canal near grandmother's house in Besut
BESUT, June 17 — A three-year-old girl was found drowned in an irrigation canal near her grandmother's home in Kampung Bukit Kenak Tok Kundur, Jerteh, on Monday evening, according to Sinar Harian. Besut district police chief Superintendent Azamuddin Ahmad @ Abu said police received a report about the incident from the girl's father at 8.53pm the same day. The victim, identified as Intan Inara Mohammad Hariz Husaini, is believed to have exited through the back door of her grandmother's house and played alone in the backyard unnoticed. 'On the day of the incident, the victim was visiting her grandmother's house with her family. 'However, around 6.10pm, the victim was found floating in an irrigation canal about 300 metres from the house by her uncle, who then rushed her to Besut Hospital. 'A medical officer confirmed that she had died,' Azamuddin said in a statement, as reported by Sinar Harian. He added that a post-mortem was conducted yesterday to determine the cause of death, and the case has been classified as sudden death. Azamuddin urged parents to always monitor the movements of young children, especially in risky areas. 'Children's safety is a shared responsibility. We urge parents to increase supervision to prevent such incidents from recurring,' he said, according to the Malay-language daily. Police also cautioned the public against making any speculations or spreading unverified information that could disrupt investigations. Singer Naim Daniel pleads not guilty to sexual assault charge involving teenager
PUTRAJAYA, June 17 — Singer Naim Daniel pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court here today to a charge of committing sexual assault against a 17-year-old girl at a hotel in May. Naim Daniel, whose full name is Muhammad Naim Daniel Baharin, 28, entered the plea after the charge was read before Judge Datin M Kunasundary in a closed-door proceeding. He is accused of committing the offence against the teenager at a hotel in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, at 8.56 am on May 19. He was charged under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 (Act 792), which carries a sentence of up to 20 years imprisonment and caning, upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Nurul Izzah Shaharuddin appeared for the prosecution, while Naim Daniel was represented by counsels Mohd Irwan Sumadi and Datuk Amirul Ridzuan Hanif. The court subsequently allowed bail at RM12,000 with one surety and ordered the accused to surrender his passport to the court. The case has been fixed for mention on August 18.
