Singer Naim Daniel pleads not guilty to sexual assault charge involving teenager
PUTRAJAYA, June 17 — Singer Naim Daniel pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court here today to a charge of committing sexual assault against a 17-year-old girl at a hotel in May.
Naim Daniel, whose full name is Muhammad Naim Daniel Baharin, 28, entered the plea after the charge was read before Judge Datin M Kunasundary in a closed-door proceeding.
He is accused of committing the offence against the teenager at a hotel in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, at 8.56 am on May 19.
He was charged under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 (Act 792), which carries a sentence of up to 20 years imprisonment and caning, upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Nurul Izzah Shaharuddin appeared for the prosecution, while Naim Daniel was represented by counsels Mohd Irwan Sumadi and Datuk Amirul Ridzuan Hanif.
The court subsequently allowed bail at RM12,000 with one surety and ordered the accused to surrender his passport to the court. The case has been fixed for mention on August 18.
On June 4, the media reported that a well-known actor and singer had been arrested by police over allegations of sexually assaulting a teenage girl at a hotel in Selangor. —Bernama

KEPALA BATAS, June 17 (Bernama) -- Authorities in Penang have identified several hotspots selling imported durians, particularly from Thailand, falsely marketed as the famed Balik Pulau variety. State Agriculture, Food Security and Cooperative Development Committee chairman Fahmi Zainol said joint operations involving the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), the Agriculture Department and the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) will be launched soon to curb such fraudulent practices. 'We've identified two or three hotspots where durians are brought in by truck from Thailand but sold as local produce. 'We're just waiting for the right time to conduct raids and issue compounds,' he told reporters after officiating the State Interim Report Launch at the Bumbong Lima Agricultural Training Institute today. Also present was Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) Chief Statistician and Agriculture Census 2024 Commissioner Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin. He said the enforcement followed public complaints and ongoing monitoring by authorities, including a recent roadblock at the Juru toll plaza involving the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department (MAQIS) and other agencies to detect non-compliant agricultural products, especially durians. While durians from other regions are not banned, Fahmi stressed that sellers must not misrepresent them as Balik Pulau durians. 'We now have a 'Track and Trace' system in place since June 1. Every durian is tagged with a QR code that lets consumers verify its origin, from farm to table,' he said. He encouraged the public to report suspicious sellers and noted that most legitimate durian farmers in Penang have adopted the tracking system to boost transparency and consumer confidence.

M'sian arrested at Woodlands checkpoint for attempted drug smuggling

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : A 30-year-old Malaysian man was arrested on June 14 for attempting to smuggle drugs estimated to be worth more than S$173,000 (RM572,672.38), including about 1.4kg of heroin, into Singapore. In a joint statement, the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) and Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) said ICA officers found a bundle believed to contain drugs behind the glove compartment of a Malaysian-registered car during a check at the Woodlands checkpoint. 'CNB officers were immediately alerted to the detection and conducted further checks, which uncovered two more bundles from the same location within the car. 'The bundles were later found to contain about 1,402g of heroin, 495g of cannabis, and 115g of methamphetamine,' said the ICA and CNB, adding that investigations are ongoing. They said the seized drugs could have supplied about 800 addicts for a week.

Just as I arrived, he breathed his last, with his wife and two children by his side. 'Sheqal was previously put into an induced coma due to declining oxygen levels. His remains will be buried in his hometown in Raub, Pahang,' he said. Dave also described the singer, known for his nusantara and traditional pop music, as friendly and well-liked by many. 'We often performed on the same stage back in the 90s. He had a unique voice. He was also very funny, he always had something humorous to share whenever we met,' he said. Prior to this, Bernama reported that the Cinta Nusantara singer had expressed a wish to return and settle down in his hometown of Kampung Tanjung Putus, Raub, Pahang, after spending over 40 years away.
