Officials in West Coast state sound alarm after traveler diagnosed with highly contagious viral disease
Public health officials in Washington state are warning residents that a Canadian traveler who was contagious with measles visited several public locations, including the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.
The person, whose vaccination status is unknown, traveled through Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and visited multiple public locations in Renton, Bellevue, Seattle, Everett and Woodinville between April 30 and May 3, according to a King County news release.
Health officials said the Canadian was given the diagnosis after traveling through the area.

The spread of measles can happen before any rash appears, and the virus can remain in the air for up to two hours after someone contagious with measles leaves the area.
Officials said potential exposure sites where the Canadian traveled include Seattle-Tacoma International Airport; Bellevue Market Place at Factoria Shopping Center; Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery; Home Depot in Redmond; Dunn Lumber in Renton; Genki Sushi in Renton; Topgolf Renton Sport Bar and Restaurant; Pho Mignon in Kirkland; Kobo at HIGO Art Gallery; Uwajimaya Seattle Asian Market; Stoup Brewing; Spicy Style of Sichuan; a hotel; and three fitness centers.

While the case is not connected to any previous local measles cases, Public Health – Seattle and King County responded to two other measles cases this year from non-residents.
There have been a total of five cases of measles in Washington state residents this year.
Meagan Kay, medical epidemiologist for Public Health – Seattle and King County, said there is a "significant measles resurgence" in the U.S. and globally.

"With over 1,000 cases reported so far this year nationally, 2025 is on track to have the highest number of measles cases in the U.S. since the early 1990s," Kay said. "It's an important time to check your vaccination status and get vaccinated if you aren't protected."

"As we collect more information, we will notify the public and individuals directly," she said. Measles begins with flu-like symptoms and is followed by a red, blotchy rash. In people with darker skin, the rash may appear brown or dark purple, Ojikutu said. Symptoms may appear seven to 21 days after exposure. New dads in Oxfordshire can now benefit from an app designed to support them on their journey through parenthood. DadPad offers practical advice and key insights into child development, and is available for free for all expectant and new fathers across the county. Councillor Kate Gregory, the county council's cabinet member for public health and inequality, said: "Parenthood, although exciting, can be a very daunting time too, and most of us will face plenty of anxiety along the way. "We know too that new dads have traditionally been an under engaged group by maternity and perinatal services. "We hope that the app will enable more dads, and their partners, to feel more confident going into parenthood." The app covers topics such as feeding, bonding, home safety, self care, holding, changing, and cleaning a baby. Julian Bose, director of Inspire Cornwall CIC, which worked alongside Oxfordshire County Council's public health team to develop the app, said: "The DadPad was created because babies don't come with a set of instructions, and dads told us that there was important information that they wanted to be given on what to expect and how to care for their baby. 'With technology playing such a big part in everyone's lives today, developing an app to complement the existing DadPad seemed the obvious next step. Three counties in NM potentially exposed to measles
Jun. 13—Health officials said Friday that residents in three New Mexico counties have potentially been exposed to measles by way of two travelers who were diagnosed with the disease during their visit to the state. People in Bernalillo, Santa Fe and Sandoval counties may have been exposed by one adult with an unknown vaccination status, along with an 18-month-old child with an age-appropriate vaccination, the New Mexico Department of Health (DOH) said in a news release. The two were traveling separately and have since left New Mexico, said David Morgan, public information officer for the DOH. When there has been a potential mass exposure, the DOH seeks information to determine which public areas a person with measles has visited. "In addition to providing locations for potential exposure, we provide the public with what symptoms they need to be aware of and guidelines on what actions to consider taking if they suspect they may have contracted measles," Morgan told the Journal. Measles symptoms begin with a cough, runny nose and red eyes before progressing to a fever and rash. In the latest health alert, the DOH warned that there may have been an exposure risk at the following times and locations: —Monday, June 2, from 1-4 p.m. at the Rio Rancho Aquatic Center, 745 Loma Colorado NE. —Thursday, June 5, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Walmart Supercenter, 5701 Herrera Drive, in Santa Fe. —Friday, June 6, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Walmart Supercenter, 2550 Coors NW, in Albuquerque, and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at El Super, 4201 Central NW, in Albuquerque. —Tuesday, June 10, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:40 p.m. at the University of New Mexico Hospital Adult Urgent Care, 2211 Lomas NE, in Albuquerque, and from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Albuquerque International Sunport main terminal, TSA security checkpoint, Terminal A, Gate A6.
