UFC CEO Dana White does not respond well to threats, even when they come from a fighter who has stepped up to help the promotion.
Earlier this month, former interim UFC lightweight champion Justin Gaethje, who also held the ceremonial BMF belt, presented the UFC with an ultimatum (via his manager, Ali Abdelaziz): give him a title shot or watch him walk away.

"Justin Gaethje fights the winner (of the UFC 317 main event)," Abdelaziz told Submission Radio in mid-June. 'He won three of his last four, he saved the UFC two times. They needed him and he's there. The guy did so much for the sport, and if anyone says he doesn't deserve it, and he said, '(If) I'm not going to fight for the title, I'm just going to hang up my gloves.' Justin is a very principled guy, and he really told me this yesterday.'
"I was with him at the fights. He said, 'I'm not going to get a title shot. I feel disrespected. I love being a UFC fighter, I love the UFC, but I feel that UFC has to love me back,' and he doesn't feel the love right now. At the end of the day, I think they love him, I think they will give him what he wanted. But at the end of the day, we have to see what happens first between Charles (Oliveira) and Ilia (Topuria)."

Not long after Abdelaziz spoke to Submission Radio, Gaethje appeared on the Makeshift Podcast and spoke about his feelings on the UFC.
"They owe me a championship fight," Gaethje said. "I'm 3-1 in my last four. They came to my house begging me to fight Max Holloway at UFC 300. I consider that an exhibition fight. I don't mean that the loss is not on my record. I mean it had nothing to do with rankings. In the time that I did that, Dustin Poirier, who I just beat, got a good win over (Benoit) Saint Denis and then fought for the belt.
"Since I've won (vs. Rafael Fiziev at UFC 313 in March), the champion (Islam Makhachev, who is also managed by Abdelaziz) has been saying he wants to fight me. So they could have easily set that up, but they didn't. Then he vacates, and then Oliveira is 2-2 in his last fights, already has a loss to Makhachev, and they bring a brand-new guy in (Topuria), and I get (expletive) again. So I'm not going to fight any of these (expletive) for fun unless they pay me so much more money."
"I'm the most consistent guy," Gaethje continued. "I think anybody that's ever performed for their company and been as consistent as an employee for their company gets a Christmas bonus, gets a thank you, get a 'Good (expletive) job.' Nah – I'm done doing (expletive) here. I love fighting for the UFC and I'd never want to fight somewhere else, but I'm not just going to throw my legacy away for anybody."
"I'm waiting for them to announce it," Gaethje said of his requested title fight. "(Oliveira is) 2-2, I'm 3-1. What do you want me to do? Not my fault (Dan) Hooker dropped out. (Arman) Tsarukyan should have got it, but he (expletive) himself. That's his fault."

On Saturday night after Topuria won the vacant UFC lightweight title with a first-round knockout of Oliveira, White was asked to address Gaethje's comments.
"Listen, if you're thinking about retiring, you know how I feel about that, you should probably retire,' White said at the UFC 317 post-fight press conference.
'We love Justin Gaethje and Justin Gaethje did step up and he's been an exciting and fun fighter to have here in the UFC but to say unless you give me a title shot otherwise I'm retiring, that's pretty wacky.'
Gaethje is the No. 3 ranked fighter in the current UFC lightweight rankings.

Deandre Ayton reportedly finalizing buyout with Trail Blazers, will become a free agent if he clears waivers
Portland center Deandre Ayton is finalizing a buyout with the Trail Blazers ESPN's Shams Charania reported Sunday. He'll become a free agent on Wednesday if he clears waivers, according to multiple reports. Advertisement Ayton is due $35.5 million next season on the final year of a four-year $133 million contract he signed with the Phoenix Suns. Terms of his buyout were not initially reported. The Trail Blazers have second-year center Donovan Clingan and Robert Williams III under contract and used the 16th pick of last week's draft to acquire 7-foot-1 Chinese center Yang Hansen. If Ayton is bought out and clears waivers, he'll become one of the top free agents in a class lacking marquee names. Teams are permitted to start negotiating with pending free agents beginning Monday. Ayton, 26, was the No. 1 overall pick of the 2018 draft class that also featured Luka Dončić, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jaren Jackson Jr. and Trae Young. Chelsea's recruitment has raised a lot of eyebrows in recent years, but Joao Pedro's arrival seems a genuinely smart piece of business. The 23-year-old will join Enzo Maresca's side in a deal in excess of £50million and will link up with his new team-mates in the United States for the Club World Cup campaign, subject to a medical. Advertisement While Chelsea have formed a habit of stockpiling attacking talent under their BlueCo ownership, Joao Pedro's profile is actually one that Maresca does not have in the squad — one that could be a crucial part of Chelsea's attacking jigsaw. Capable of playing as a centre-forward, second striker or attacking midfielder, Joao Pedro's best attributes are stitching attacks together — often drifting towards the left side of the pitch but also dropping in to help progress his side up the field. That is exactly the profile of player that Maresca's system requires, someone who is able to show for the ball when midfield options are limited within Chelsea's build-up. Nicolas Jackson has shown that he does have strengths in that part of his game — linking play and working the channels well — but he and Liam Delap are more likely to stretch the opposition back line with their runs in behind. By contrast, Joao Pedro is far more natural in making runs towards the ball — equally comfortable creating for those looking to run beyond him as he is spearheading his side's attack. This is reflected in his SkillCorner profile below, looking at his off-ball run types per 30 minutes in possession, compared with centre-forwards across Europe's top seven leagues. It is striking how low Joao Pedro's ratings are for running in behind (20 out of 99) and running to attack the box to receive a potential cross (Cross receiver, 12 out of 99). Instead, look how often the Brazilian international looks to come towards the ball (Coming short, 70 out of 99) or create overloads by running closer to his team-mate (Support runs, 91 out of 99). A neat example can be seen in Brighton's home clash with Leicester City towards the end of last season. As Carlos Baleba carries the ball from defence, Joao Pedro drops off from the last line to provide an option to receive the ball. As shown in frame two, you can see him check his shoulder for the space he has opened up as Leicester's Conor Coady points for a team-mate to pick him up. Upon receiving the ball, Joao Pedro turns, drives forward, and slides a delightful ball through to Simon Adingra, making a dangerous out-to-in run from the flank. This would be the perfect exemplar of the key traits that attracted Maresca to the 23-year-old. While Joao Pedro can offer goals — with an average of 0.22 non-penalty goals per 90 minutes (a rate of one goal every five games) across his two seasons at Brighton — Chelsea are not signing him to be a prolific goalscorer. In theory, that job will fall to Jackson or Delap as out-and-out No 9s. Advertisement Instead, Joao Pedro can be the one to link the midfield and attack together, finding runners ahead of him and dragging opposition centre-backs with him to create space for others to exploit. His profile is made all the more clear when looking at The Athletic's new position-specific player pizza charts, comparing the Brazilian with other centre-forwards across Europe's top five leagues. As shown below, his attacking metrics do not catch the eye. Not one to stay between the width of the goalposts (Box threat, 38 out of 99), and barely a prolific shooter (Shot frequency, 7 out of 99), this underlines the type of player Chelsea are investing in. Instead, that ability to set up others (Creative threat, 92 out of 99) and progress the ball with passes (86 out of 99) and carries (79 out of 99) is where Joao Pedro can catalyse the attack further up the sequence chain. Ironically, Chelsea looked more devastating in transitional moments last season, but Maresca remains dogmatic in maximising control with long sequences of possession and a strong rest defence to sustain attacks when they lose the ball. Joao Pedro's arrival makes it clear that the Chelsea coach is looking for players with the technical quality to instil that style. To borrow the famous quote by Spanish coach and former Manchester City's assistant manager, Juanma Lillo: 'The quicker the ball goes forward, the quicker it comes back'. Maresca is very much from the same school of thought. Rather than playing with a counter-attacking style, Joao Pedro's profile would allow Chelsea to still progress the ball through the thirds while having a No 9 who can retain possession and find a killer pass in key areas — think Liverpool's Roberto Firmino in his peak years under Jurgen Klopp. Maresca would be sensible to look at the way Brighton utilise their wingers with intelligent out-to-in runs from the touchline, exploiting spaces in behind when the likes of Joao Pedro pull opposition defensive lines out of shape. Advertisement With the pace and purposeful running from wide areas in the shape of Pedro Neto, Noni Madueke, Tyrique George and the incoming Jamie Gittens — not to mention the box-crashing runs of left-back Marc Cucurella — Joao Pedro could provide an added dimension to Chelsea's attack that complements the existing creativity shouldered by Cole Palmer. For the glut of talent they already have at Stamford Bridge, Joao Pedro's arrival actually makes a great deal of tactical sense.
