
Scientists Call for Deeper Investigation and Standardization of Methodologies for Measuring and Assessing Tire Wear Emissions in First-of-Its-Kind 'State of Knowledge' Papers
The series, titled 'State of Knowledge: Tire wear emissions during the use phase,' is the most comprehensive review of its kind, analyzing more than 850 peer-reviewed scientific publications from the last 40 years. It reveals how the current knowledge base on tire wear emissions is scattered, inconsistent and inconclusive, due to varying approaches and assumptions. The papers summarize the main observations on the topic, as well as highlight the data gaps, emphasizing the need for additional scientific investigation with a common approach across tire industry stakeholders.
Supported by the Tire Industry Project (TIP), the series consists of three distinct papers, each addressing a critical layer of tire wear emission knowledge. The first two published papers focus on the characterization of tire wear emissions and assessment of their environmental impact. The third paper, expected to be published in late 2025, will focus on potential health impacts.
Dr. Stephan Wagner, a guiding force behind the papers, explains, 'The topic of tire wear emissions is extremely complex, multi-dimensional, and unfortunately only partially understood. While notable progress has been made over the years in analyzing such emissions, significant knowledge gaps and inconsistencies prevent a full understanding of their behavior and impact. Until these gaps are closed, there is a growing concern that decisions about tire emissions could be based on incomplete science. Resolving this requires all stakeholders—academia, industry and policymakers—to collaborate and drive for consistency, built on shared research and assessment models such as those proposed in our papers.'

Prehistoric Air Has Been Reconstructed From Dinosaur Teeth in an Amazing First
A collection of dinosaur teeth hailing back to the Cretaceous and Jurassic periods has given scientists a new window into the world's prehistoric climate. By studying an isotope of oxygen in the fossils to infer atmospheric carbon dioxide levels, a team led by geochemist Dingsu Feng of the Georg August University of Göttingen in Germany has reconstructed the very air the dinosaurs breathed. The results show that dinosaur teeth are a powerful tool for scientists, not just for understanding the world in which the dinosaurs lived, but the events that took place, since changing isotope levels can imply events such as massive volcanic eruptions. Related: The Rise of The Dinosaurs Can Be Tracked in Their Fossilized Poop "Our findings provide a new research avenue to reconstruct a direct link between land-living vertebrates and the atmosphere they breathed," paleontologist and geochemist Thomas Tütken of the Institute of Geosciences at Johannes Gutenberg Universität, Mainz in Germany told ScienceAlert. "Even after up to 150 million years, isotopic traces of the oxygen molecules of the Mesozoic atmosphere that the dinosaur inhaled are still preserved in fossil tooth enamel and can tell us something about the ancient atmosphere composition and global photosynthetic biomass production." You don't just exist in this beautiful world of ours. It also exists in you. Everything you take in – from the food you eat, to the liquid you drink, to even the very air that you breathe – leaves a chemical imprint on your body, including your bones and teeth. This is true for all vertebrates, including the dinosaurs. Ratios of atoms of the same elements but different masses, known as isotopes, can hint at a variety of ecological and climatic variations that dominate in an organism's lifetime. Oxygen atoms attached to carbon dioxide is just one such isotope. In particular, Feng and her team looked for tracers of an isotope called oxygen-17. Processes in the atmosphere result in a lower amount of this particular isotope in the dioxide oxygen gas that is then inhaled by living organisms. "Air-breathing vertebrates incorporate a fraction of this anomalous air oxygen into their body water pool due to oxidative metabolism of food," Tütken explained. "A fraction of this oxygen isotope anomaly is incorporated during biomineralization processes into dental enamel, and survives over millions of years in this vertebrate high tissue and can thus be used to infer past atmospheric CO2 levels." The researchers recently demonstrated that oxygen isotope ratios in the tooth enamel of living, modern animals provide an accurate representation of atmospheric CO2 levels. The next logical step was then to see if they could do the same thing with fossils that are millions of years old. "Dinosaur tooth samples were prime targets to be analyzed as large triple oxygen isotope anomalies were to be expected and could quite precisely be measured," Tütken said. Using enamel powders previously taken from specimens obtained from museum collections across Europe for other diet-related reconstructions, Tütken and his colleagues concluded concentrations of CO2 had been high during the Mesozoic; a finding in agreement with previous investigations into Earth's CO2 history. In the late Jurassic, CO2 levels were at about 1,200 parts per million, for example; in the late Cretaceous, around 750 parts per million. By comparison, Earth's atmosphere currently has around 430 parts per million CO2, and counting. During the Mesozoic, atmospheric CO2 was probably produced by much higher levels of volcanic activity than we see today. Two teeth, in particular, seemed to suggest a spike in volcanic activity. "There were surprising high triple oxygen isotope anomalies found for one T. rex and one sauropod (Kaatedocus) tooth analyzed compared to the other near-contemporaneous dinosaurs," Tütken said. "These potentially reflect atmospheric spikes of high CO2 levels during the time these individual dinosaurs were alive. Most likely related to volcanic CO2 emission during large flood basalt eruption events. Thus our study provides new insights into the composition of the Mesozoic atmosphere in which the dinosaurs breathed and indicates that CO2 levels fluctuated (up to 160 percent) over geologically short time scales." Now that the team has shown their technique works, they plan to look at teeth from an event known as the Great Dying, the Permian-Triassic global extinction that took place 252 million years ago and wiped out the vast majority of all animals on Earth. This event has been linked to a devastating period of volcanic activity that wrapped our planet in a volcanic shroud for millions of years. By reconstructing the atmospheric CO2 from this period, the researchers hope to learn more about how the Great Dying impacted life on Earth. The research has been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Wild New Theory Suggests Gravitational Waves Shaped The Universe
Just as ocean waves shape our shores, ripples in space-time may have once set the Universe on an evolutionary path that led to the cosmos as we see it today. A new theory suggests gravitational waves – rather than hypothetical particles called inflatons – drove the Universe's early expansion, and the redistribution of matter therein. "For decades, we have tried to understand the early moments of the Universe using models based on elements we have never observed," explains the first author of the paper, theoretical astrophysicist Raúl Jiménez of the University of Barcelona. "What makes this proposal exciting is its simplicity and verifiability. We are not adding speculative elements, but rather demonstrating that gravity and quantum mechanics may be sufficient to explain how the structure of the cosmos came into being." Related: Dark Matter May Have Existed Before The Big Bang, Study Finds We don't know for certain how the very earliest stages of the Universe unfolded following the Big Bang some 13.8 billion years ago. All scientists can do at this point is come up with theories that fit the physics of the Universe we do observe. Those theories are pretty good, but there are clear shortcomings. Take the JWST's discovery of large numbers of massive galaxies earlier in the Universe than cosmologists expected, for example. The currently accepted timeline of the Universe's evolution involves a period of rapid expansion, or inflation, just after the Big Bang. From a single, one-dimensional point of infinite density – a singularity, the mathematical description of the Universe just before the Big Bang – the Universe rapidly inflated, puffing up with a hot plasma soup that cooled to form matter. The inflaton is a speculative particle or quantum field that scientists use to explain cosmological inflation and the surprising smoothness of the cosmos. In theory, the particle drives the rapid expansion of the Universe while still allowing for variations in the density of the plasma soup that eventually condense into black holes, galaxies, stars, and all the other bits and bobs of matter scattered throughout the Universe. Despite our best efforts, however, physicists have found no other evidence that supports the existence of the inflaton. Jiménez and his colleagues wanted to know if there's another way – if we can explain the early evolution of the Universe using different parameters that rely less on speculative elements. They started with a very simplified model of the real Universe consistent with general relativity and current observations of the expansion of the Universe, called de Sitter space. Within this field, quantum fluctuations in space-time – that is, gravitational waves – can be generated by a type of turbulence called tensor perturbations. Gravitational waves are thought to fill the Universe today. They're the ripples generated in space-time by massive disruptions. The ones we can detect currently are generated by collisions between massive, dense objects such as neutron stars and black holes, but physicists believe the entire Universe is ringing with a constant background hum of gravitational waves too large for us to be able to detect (yet). The researchers found that the gravitational waves generated by tensor perturbations in their space-time model could create density variations in the primordial plasma on their own, as well as drive the early expansion of the Universe. Eventually, these variations would create clumps dense enough to collapse under gravity and form the seeds of the early Universe – the very first stars and galaxies and black holes. It's such an elegant solution, and removes the reliance on hypotheticals as the driving force behind the early evolution of the entire Universe, although further work is needed to verify it, of course. Nevertheless, "Our proposed mechanism could remove the need for a model-dependent scenario: the choice of a scalar field, as the inflaton, to drive inflation," the researchers write. Shroud of Turin study unlocks new, key details of Jesus' burial — reinforcing accuracy of biblical accounts
The blood, sweat and tears on these threads are still — sorta — shrouded in mystery. New findings provide more evidence on what Jesus might have been buried in after he was crucified. A recent study conducted by Johns Hopkins-trained immunologist Kelly Kearse suggests that it is, in fact, possible that Jesus was buried unwashed, wrapped in spices and linen — which is believed to be the Shroud of Turin — as biblical narratives suggest. The research, published in the International Journal of Archaeology in June 2025, specifically referenced a garment where evidence of blood clotting was found. Among the key discoveries from the study, visible rings around bloodstains — or serum halos — were found on the linen when examined with a UV light. Kearse tested multiple samples — mimicking blood conditions after death, including thickened consistency and increased acidity. The expert also studied the way that blood transfers to textiles in various conditions and compared it to the bloodstains on the Shroud of Turin with a microscope. The immunologist, who has studied the shroud for years, believes that this is a revealing element that can help provide context for Jesus' burial conditions — specifically, for what he calls 'the washing hypothesis,' according to the study. A previous study of the shroud, done in 1998, concluded that if a body was indeed enveloped in the cloth, it was washed before burial. The serum halos are only visible if wounds begin to clot before touching the surface. If the body were washed or cleaned, the stains wouldn't be as prominent. Biblical passages suggest that the Jewish burial customs observed prohibited the washing of bodies that suffered violent deaths, with the belief that blood should not be separated from the physical body in the case of murder. Countless studies about the Shroud of Turin have been conducted across the centuries since it surfaced, and skeptics have suggested various theories about the authenticity of the shroud itself and the biblical account. One such recent inquiry into the iconic cloth is that it was not the messiah's post-mortem mode, but rather, it was used to swathe an artist's chiseled Christ-like copy, a study suggested.
