Sean 'Diddy' Combs loses bid to get out of jail prior to sentencing

By Luc Cohen
NEW YORK (Reuters) -Sean "Diddy" Combs on Monday lost his bid to be released from jail ahead of his October 3 sentencing, despite a jury having found the hip-hop mogul not guilty of the most serious charges at his sex crimes trial.
Combs' lawyers had asked U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian on July 29 to release Combs on $50 million bond, saying conditions at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn were dangerous and other defendants convicted of prostitution-related charges similar to Combs' were usually released before sentencing.
In a written ruling, the judge said Combs' arguments "might have traction in a case that didn't involve evidence of violence, coercion or subjugation in connection with the acts of prostitution at issue, but the record here contains evidence of all three."
Subramanian said his decision did not foreshadow what sentence he might impose against Combs, who has been jailed at the MDC since his September 2024 arrest.
Combs' lawyers did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Prosecutors with the Manhattan U.S. Attorney's office in an August 1 filing said staffing, medical services and conditions at the MDC had improved since Combs' arrest, and evidence of Combs' physical violence presented at trial showed he remained a danger to the community.
Combs, 55, was found not guilty on July 2 of three counts of sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy, and convicted on two lesser charges of transportation to engage in prostitution.
Prosecutors alleged Combs forced two former girlfriends to participate in days-long, drug-fueled sexual performances with male sex workers sometimes called "freak-offs." Defense lawyers said the women were willing participants.
Each prostitution charge carries a maximum 10-year sentence, but prosecutors have acknowledged that federal sentencing guidelines appear to recommend a sentence of at most 5-1/4 years total.
Combs, the founder of Bad Boy Records, pleaded not guilty to all counts. The trial lasted seven weeks.
Subramanian denied Combs' initial request for release immediately after the verdict, citing the ample evidence presented at trial of violent acts he committed.

Bride Faces Dilemma as Groom's Mom's Handmade Soaps for Wedding Smell Like 'Absolute Trash'

"[It] was the kindest gesture… except they smell like 'plastic turd,' " the bride-to-be wrote on Reddit NEED TO KNOW A bride shared on Reddit that her soon-to-be mother-in-law made soaps for her wedding favors, but they smell like "absolute trash" Now, the bride is unsure if she should "power through," hide the soaps so guests can't take them home or tell the groom's mother the truth about the stinky scent Most Redditors advised the bride to not risk hurting the groom's mother's feelings, and instead label the soaps as being made by her future in-law and hope that guests will forget to take them home A bride-to-be is in a stinky situation. In a post shared to Reddit's "Advice," "Wedding," and "Wedding Drama" forums, a bride pleaded to users on the platform to give their opinion on how to handle a sensitive — and smelly — scenario with her soon-to-be mother-in-law. The groom's mother created wedding favors with good intentions, but the results were less than desirable. "My MIL (mother-in-law) sweetly handmade soaps as wedding favors for our wedding — which was the kindest gesture… except they smell like 'plastic turd,' " the bride wrote. Because the groom's mother lives in a different state than the couple, neither of them were actually able to see or smell the soaps "until it was way too late to pivot." Now, the bride feels "stuck" between hurting her future mother-in-law's feelings by telling her the truth about the soaps smelling like "absolute trash," or letting her be happy at the expense of wedding guests' nostrils. "On one hand, I don't want to hurt her feelings because she put in so much time and love," she said. "On the other hand, they smell so bad I'm genuinely embarrassed to give them to guests." She gave Reddit users three options to choose from: "Do I: A) Power through B) Hide them after some point so that people don't/can't actually take them home C) Tell her gently and risk hurt feelings." Never miss a story — sign up for to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. In the comments sections across the three subreddits, the majority of Redditors voted on option A with a few adjustments. "You could attach a little tag to the soaps or a little sign 'lovingly hand made by MIL (mother-in-law)' and so when people take them and they're stinky, they know it's not you," the top comment on the "Advice" forum reads. Many individuals said that wedding guests often forget to take home wedding favors anyway, so if the soaps are placed in a basket or on tables then they may be naturally left at the celebration. A few people argued that this should be the groom's problem to handle because it's his mother. Read the original article on People Solve the daily Crossword

Breeze Airways flight diverts after 'unruly' passenger breaks restraints twice

A Breeze Airways flight heading to Los Angeles from Virginia was diverted after a passenger with a skateboard became "unruly" and started waving the sports equipment around at flight attendants, according to local police and federal authorities. Officers with Grand Junction police in Grand Junction, Colorado, about 244 miles west of Denver, responded to an incident at the Grand Junction Airport around 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 13, the department said in a Facebook post. Upon arrival, officers found that an intoxicated 46-year-old passenger from Los Angeles, "became agitated" and yelled "racist slurs at airline staff" while aboard Breeze Airways Flight 704, which had left Norfolk, Virginia, around 9 a.m. on Aug. 13, according to information from local police and the FBI. As flight attendants attempted to restrain the man while in the air, he managed to break free of the restraints twice, prompting an emergency landing at the airport, police said. Was the passenger charged with a crime? The passenger did not physically assault anyone on the aircraft, and no injuries were reported, according to police. Neither the police department nor the FBI provided information about possible charges the man may face, but confirmed that the U.S. Attorney's Office would release further details regarding charges. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, passengers who engage in unruly behavior can be sentenced to prison, fined up to $37,000 or be put on a no-fly list. In 2025, there have been over 1,000 cases of unruly passengers on board commercial planes, according to the FAA. Following the incident, the passenger was taken into custody by the Grand Junction Police Department and transported to the Mesa County Detention Facility. An investigation into the incident remains ongoing. USA TODAY has emailed Breeze Airways for comment on Thursday, Aug. 14, but has not received a response. Breeze Airways is a low-cost airline headquartered in Cottonwood Heights, Utah, and provides nonstop service between underserved routes at affordable rates, according to its website. The airline began operating commercially in 2021. Michelle Del Rey is a trending news reporter for USA TODAY.
