Tasked with expanding the off-price segment, Bharwani introduced a supply chain model sourcing from vetted vendors across Pakistan, Ethiopia, and Egypt benefiting retailers across the U.S. and giving consumers access to quality goods at lower prices.
"Her knowledge and connections are extensive. It helped lead us to an expanded base of supply, increased production, procurement and profitability," said a Karmin executive. "This has been a key factor in reducing our costs."
Reinventing the Off-Price Fashion Playbook
Bharwani's impact is most apparent in her sourcing innovations. She's tapped into underutilized global textile capabilities, bringing premium fleece blends from Pakistan, double pique knits from Ethiopia, and ring-spun cotton tees from Kenya to American shelves.
In one standout case, she transformed leftovers of a rare double pique knit fabric with moisture-wicking abilities from Al Asr Industries PLC in Ethiopia into a line of men's activewear tops under Karmin's Azur private label. The result: affordable performance apparel for U.S. retailers and a new revenue stream for the Ethiopian manufacturer.
The designs were later showcased at Africa Sourcing and Fashion Week, with 430,000 units purchased by Gor Factory, helping Al Asr break into Europe. Her knack for connecting the right fabric with the right market has made her indispensable. "I don't just fill a gap I anticipate it," Bharwani says.
Turning Deadstock into Economic Wins
As lead fashion consultant at Empire Apparel LLC today, Bharwani recently led a landmark acquisition and redistribution of 1.2 million units of Hanes Brands Inc. inventory. Amid inflation and overstock, this move gave American discount retailers premium access at off-price rates.
She oversaw and advised her team on everything from quality control to buyer segmentation, ensuring rapid inventory turnover while maximizing margins. The initiative didn't just give smaller retailers a competitive edge without costly production it allowed consumers to access quality apparel at reduced prices. The project also opened new export channels to Europe and reduced textile waste, promoting sustainability.
"This wasn't just about clearing inventory," she notes. "It was about building a circular economy that uplifts retailers, expands consumer choice, and aligns with sustainability goals."

It was the sort of dilemma that once might have erupted into public disputes among Germany, France and Britain, the continent's largest powers. This time, it didn't. The leaders of those countries decided they would all accompany Mr Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, to Washington, for a summit with Mr Trump about peace talks with Russia. So would the leaders of Italy, Finland, the European Union and Nato. They flew in on separate planes. But with Mr Trump, they spoke in one voice. 'We were well prepared and well coordinated,' Mr Friedrich Merz, chancellor of Germany, told reporters after he and his counterparts met Mr Trump at the White House. Since Mr Trump's election, European leaders have raced to shore up their own defenses, wary of losing American support. Nato members, led by Germany, have pledged to increase their military spending significantly, to meet a target set by Mr Trump. Mr Merz, President Emmanuel Macron of France and Prime Minister Keir Starmer of Britain have signed new friendship treaties with one another and begun to build a set of shadow diplomatic institutions, including one for Ukraine, that advance European interests but do not include the United States. The last two weeks have forced them to coordinate even more closely, on the fly. After Mr Trump made the shock announcement that he would meet President Vladimir Putin of Russia in Alaska, Mr Merz quickly pulled together European allies for a video call with Mr Trump. The Europeans presented Mr Trump with a five-point strategy for him to take into the Alaska meeting – including the insistence that only Ukraine could negotiate any land swaps with Russia and that for serious peace talks to begin Russia must first agree to a ceasefire. Mr Trump signed on to it. But at the summit, he abandoned it – agreeing with Mr Putin's long-standing push to negotiate a peace deal while fighting continues, a position that advantages Russia, which is making gains on the battlefield. That reversal alarmed the European officials, even as they publicly stressed a few areas in which Mr Trump had seemingly won concessions, like the need for a robust multinational security guarantee for post-war Ukraine. After Mr Trump called to brief Mr Zelensky and then the European leaders on his way back from Alaska early on Aug 15, they scrambled again. They agreed on the large group to accompany Mr Zelensky, which was formalised by a White House invitation on the night of Aug 16, and hammered out a strategy for the meeting. Early on Aug 18, they huddled at the Ukrainian Embassy in Washington. Their script leaned heavily on flattery for Trump, which is by now standard practice among visiting dignitaries, and on declarations of unity with each other and with Mr Trump. 'Everybody around this table is in favor of peace,' Mr Macron said, as television cameras rolled, near the start of a large group meeting with the president. The Europeans avoided big disagreements with Mr Trump; the closest anyone came to a diplomatic row was when Mr Merz, on camera, repeated his belief that talks between Mr Zelensky and Mr Putin could only happen if a ceasefire was in place. Privately, Mr Merz pressed Mr Trump on at least forcing a ceasefire for the duration of any actual meeting between Mr Putin and Mr Zelensky. They also tugged on Mr Trump's heartstrings. Mr Zelensky presented a letter from his wife to Mrs Melania Trump, the first lady, echoing her public concerns over the fate of Ukrainian children abducted by Russian troops. Mr Zelensky and Dr Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Union, raised the topic again shortly before their meeting ended and Mr Trump left to call Mr Putin. European leaders expressed confidence that the approach had helped to break whatever spell Mr Putin appeared to have cast over Mr Trump in Alaska, and that Mr Trump had ended the day back in agreement with them over most points about the peace process. Mr Trump, in an interview with Fox News on Aug 19, sounded pleased with the Europeans who had visited him. 'They want to get back to leading their countries,' he said. 'They're consumed with this far more than we are.' He also took credit, in a way, for their united front. 'A year ago, they wouldn't have come,' he said. 'They wouldn't have even thought about it.' [WASHINGTON] The US Commerce Department said on Tuesday (Aug 19) that it is hiking steel and aluminium tariffs on more than 400 products, including wind turbines, mobile cranes, appliances, bulldozers and other heavy equipment, along with railcars, motorcycles, marine engines, furniture and hundreds of other products. The department said that 407 product categories are being added to the list of 'derivative' steel and aluminium products covered by sectoral tariffs, with a 50 per cent tariff on any steel and aluminium content of these products plus the country rate on the non-steel and non-aluminium content. Evercore ISI said in a research note that the move covers more than 400 product codes representing over US$200 billion in imports last year and estimates it will raise the overall effective tariff rate by around one percentage point. The department is also adding imported parts for automotive exhaust systems and electrical steel needed for electric vehicles (EVs) to the new tariffs, as well as components for buses, air conditioners as well as appliances, including refrigerators, freezers and dryers. A group of foreign automakers had urged the department not to add the parts, saying the US does not have the domestic capacity to handle current demand. Tesla unsuccessfully asked Commerce to reject a request to add steel products used in EV motors and wind turbines, saying there was no available US capacity to produce steel for use in the drive unit of EVs. The new tariffs take effect immediately and also cover compressors and pumps and the metal in imported cosmetics and other personal care packaging, such as aerosol cans. 'Today's action expands the reach of the steel and aluminium tariffs and shuts down avenues for circumvention, supporting the continued revitalisation of the American steel and aluminium industries,' said Under Secretary of Commerce for Industry and Security Jeffrey Kessler. Steelmakers, including Cleveland Cliffs, Nucor and others, had petitioned the administration to expand the tariffs to include additional steel and aluminium auto parts. REUTERS

WASHINGTON - Top US and European military officers met in Washington on Aug 19 to discuss the mechanics of a possible Ukraine peace deal, after President Donald Trump ruled out sending American troops to back an agreement but suggested air support instead. In a flurry of diplomacy aimed at ending the war, Mr Trump brought Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders to the White House on Aug 18, three days after his landmark encounter with Russia's Vladimir Putin in Alaska. But while Mr Trump said Mr Putin had agreed to meet Mr Zelensky and accept some Western security guarantees for Ukraine, those promises have been met with extreme caution by Kyiv and Western capitals, and many details remain vague. Mr Putin proposed holding the summit with Mr Zelensky in Moscow, three sources familiar with the Trump call told AFP. One source said Mr Zelensky immediately said no to meeting in the capital of his country's invader. As Western leaders push for an agreement, top US officer General Dan Caine held talks the evening of Aug 19 with European military chiefs to discuss 'best options for a potential Ukraine peace deal,' a US defence official told AFP. 'France and Germany, a couple of them, UK, they want to have boots on the ground,' Mr Trump said, in a Fox News interview. 'We're willing to help them with things, especially, probably, if you talk about by air.' Asked what assurances Mr Trump had that US boots would not be on the ground, he replied: 'Well, you have my assurance and I'm president.' Allies discuss next steps The White House later doubled down on Mr Trump's statements – but gave few new details on either the summit or the security guarantees. Press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters that Mr Trump 'has definitively stated US boots will not be on the ground in Ukraine' and that the use of US air power was 'option and a possibility'. Ms Leavitt insisted that Mr Putin had promised Mr Trump he would meet Mr Zelensky, and said top US officials were 'coordinating' with Russia on a summit. Mr Trump had dramatically interrupted his meeting with Mr Zelensky and the Europeans at the White House on Aug 18 to call the Russian leader. Allies have expressed doubts that Mr Putin will go through with the meeting. The Europeans are, however, seizing on the possibility of a peace deal following the Trump talks. French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer brought together around 30 of Ukraine's allies known as the 'Coalition of the Willing' for virtual consultations. Mr Starmer told them coalition teams and US officials would meet in the coming days to 'prepare for the deployment of a reassurance force if the hostilities ended,' a Downing Street spokesperson said. Geneva, Budapest floated for summits Russia has warned that any solution must also protect its own 'security interests' and has ruled out Ukraine joining Nato. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov added that any meeting between the leaders 'must be prepared very thoroughly.' Mr Lavrov's comments, and Mr Putin's offer of Moscow as a summit venue, reinforced European fears that Russia was once again stalling. Mr Macron said he wanted the summit to take place in Geneva, a historic venue for peace talks. Switzerland said it was ready to offer immunity to Mr Putin, who faces an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court over the war. Mr Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz have both said the summit could take place in two weeks. The White House declined to comment on a Politico report that it was eying Hungary's capital Budapest as a venue for a follow-up three-way summit including Mr Trump. On the streets of Kyiv, there was scepticism about whether the latest talks can end the grinding conflict. 'The main problem is Putin himself doesn't want it,' said Anton, 32, who works in a warehouse. 'They can meet as many times as they want but Putin doesn't need it and Donald Trump doesn't really know what to do.' But in Moscow, some people were more optimistic. 'I hope we can agree on mutually beneficial terms,' said Vyacheslav, 23, who works for the government. AFP
