Eurovision fans go wild as Celine Dion 'rehearses' to perform at the grand final

Daily Mirror07-05-2025

The singer's poor health has stopped her from performing but after her triumph at the Paris Olympics, she might make it to Eurovision
Eurovision fans are going wild at the prospect of Celine Dion performing in Switzerland at the grand final of the contest later this month. A Swiss news website has reported that there is an 'agreement in principle' for the singer to take part in Basel, in just over a week's time.
There have been rumours about her involvement for months but now rehearsals for the orchestra are said to have taken place for Celine's performance in the arena, using a stand-in vocalist.

The peak excitement is because Celine, 57, officially withdrew from live performances in 2022, having revealed she was suffering from stiff person syndrome, a debilitating condition which causes muscle spasms.

Despite this, the international superstar made a comeback to sing at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where her performance of Hymne à l'amour from the Eiffel Tower was widely hailed as the highlight of the Opening Ceremony.
Celine is particularly loved by the Swiss public having been the last act to bring them victory at Eurovision. She competed for the country in 1988 with the song Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi and her triumph was the last time the country finished in first place until Nemo's win last year with The Code.
It is thought that while the French-Canadian singer is gearing up to perform on the stage at St. Jakobshalle, an option remains in place for her to withdraw, if she needs to, for health reasons.
No official confirmation has yet come from organisers the European Broadcasting Union, but either way her victory from 37 years ago, when she was just 20, is expected to be marked with a filmed tribute during one of the semi-finals.

Edi Estermann, communications boss for Eurovision 2025, said that while they would be thrilled to have Celine perform, her health must come first. She said: 'Céline will, of course, always be connected to Swiss Eurovision history and is a part of it. We would love to have her on the show and are in contact with her. But her health comes first. It's still open for us.'
One fan said it would be 'the moment of the decade' while another agreed: 'It was a miracle she was even able to perform at the Olympics. If she can appear here too it'll be something very special indeed.'
A third fan added: 'If she wants to participate I'd be overjoyed to see her in whatever capacity she's comfortable with.'

Shoppers say supermarket has 'lost its mind' over £80 Father's Day gift

Father's Day is fast approaching and many people will be snapping up last-minute gifts for their dad or father figure. The supermarkets have all the usual items on offer, from beer sets to best dad mugs, but there's one product that's causing a bit of a stir with shoppers. Morrisons has launched a limited-edition Toblerone bar that weighs a whopping 4.5kg and is more than 12 times the size of the regular chocolate treat. But it's not the size that has people raising their eyebrows, it's the price as the bar, which is bigger and heavier than a newborn baby, costs £80 (£60 with a Morrisons More Card). A shot of the massive Toblerone was shared on social media in the Food Finds UK Official group where people were baffled as to why anyone would ever need that much chocolate. Teddy Lowki branded it 'senseless', writing: 'Question is, does anyone really need this chocolate bar? Parting with over £50 for chocolate, I don't see the logic. Even if it was a Christmas promotion, it's just senseless.' And Giulia Viglianisi said: 'They lost their minds' as Ranae Quinn posted: 'Not a chance, doubt anyone likes their dad that much.' Diana Brown also wasn't keen, sharing: 'Love Morrisons, love Toblerone, but would never buy one that big and for that amount of money.' 'No way would I pay that,' exclaimed Jenny Cornwell, as Ian Crist asked: 'How much?!!!' 'Ridiculous price for some chocolate,' agreed Paul Smith and Mark O'Donohoe added: 'How do you justify this to yourself £60 for a chocolate bar? That's a whole shop with other treats in that shop.' Others asked if it was a 'joke' and wondered how on earth anyone would break into a chocolate bar that size. Not everyone was opposed to the product though with some being fans of it. Scott Bishop revealed he'd had one last year, as Steve Clark posted: 'More reasons to shop at Morrisons.' Kimberley Ackew admitted the chocolate bar was her 'dream', as Bex Brown claimed people were buying them, as they'd all sold out in her local store. Katy Bailey was also a fan, sharing: 'My hubby bought me one a few years back, it took us months to eat, had to use a sharp knife to segment it, it was awesome.' According to Morrisons, the Swiss milk chocolate bar is £19.99 cheaper with a More Card than it is at alternative retailers such as Amazon, where it costs £79.99. Morrisons is going hard on supersizing things for Father's Day. As well as the giant Toblerone, the retailer is also selling a Footlong sausage roll for Father's Day and both of these are available in stores until June 15. More Trending And in Morrisons Cafés nationwide, dads (and anyone who fancies it) can also tuck into a ginormous breakfast feast, as the 'Big Daddy' is back. The 23-piece fry-up is £10 and features four bacon rashers, four sausages, four crispy hash browns, three slices of black pudding, three fried eggs, baked beans, sliced mushrooms and not one, or two but three slices of bread with butter. For Morrisons Scottish customers, the four sausages and four hash browns are replaced with four Lorne sausages and four traditional potato scones. View More » Chris Strong, senior café trading manager at Morrisons, said: 'Back by popular demand, our Big Daddy Breakfast is bigger and better! It's for the hungriest of dads and father figures that do us proud. We've created the Big Daddy Breakfast to be bold, satisfying, and full of classic favourites, all at a price that's hard to beat.' Opal Chuangsri makes history as Thailand's first Miss World

What makes Thailand beam with pride? It could be our stunning tourist spots or world-famous cuisine, but it's the people behind the moments that truly inspire us. Just two weeks ago, the nation celebrated an extraordinary milestone: Suchata 'Opal' Chuangsri became the first Thai woman to wear the Miss World crown! And now, Bangkok is getting ready to welcome her home in style on June 14 with a grand celebration you won't want to miss. Here's the plan: The festivities begin at 1.30pm when the newly crowned Miss World touches down at Suvarnabhumi Airport, Gate 10. From there, she'll head to the Bangkok Planetarium, where the parade begins at 4.40pm. The procession will then roll on to the EM District, so if you're nearby, this is your chance to see her up close. Finally, the big welcome party takes place at UOB Live at EmSphere starting from 6pm. It's not every day that a Thai woman shines at the very top of the world stage. Sure, beauty pageants happen all the time, but Miss World is different. Established in 1951 in the UK, it's the oldest international pageant and no Thai woman had ever stood in that winner's spotlight – until now. Unlike many other competitions, Miss World focuses on more than just looks. There's no swimsuit round and contestants are judged on their intelligence, talent and commitment to making a difference. In a way, winning Miss World is like winning the Olympics of beauty pageants. When Opal Suchata became the first Thai woman to win Miss World, it wasn't just a personal triumph – it was a moment of pride for the entire nation. As she returns home, it's time to celebrate not only her achievement but also the joy and inspiration she brings to Thailand.

US will take part in Putin's knock-off Eurovision song contest, Russia says… competing against Iran and China

Mad Vlad's mouthpiece media made the bizarre claim that Americans would sing in the Intervision 2025 Song Contest, Russia's bootleg version of the iconic competition. Putin's country was booted out of the official Eurovision Song Contest following his bloody invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Propaganda outlet Tass claimed "sources" had told them that "representatives from the United States" would take part in the knock-off event. Their so-called source said: "Indeed, the United States has confirmed its participation in the Intervision. They gave no further details on American involvement in the competition. Earlier this year, Putin signed a decree for the Intervision Song Contest to be held in Moscow in September 2025. More than 25 of his ally countries are set to join his contest - including North Korea, Iran, Cuba, and Venezuela. Mad Vlad has already said his bizarre idea has been backed by his "Chinese friends". This sad attempt at recreating Eurovision will reportedly ban LGBT performers. Putin's Ukraine war toll tops 1 MILLION Russians dead & wounded 40 months into 'days-long operation'…with no end in sight, with Stephen Hall In Russia, rules now ban anything deemed to promote homosexuality, and the international LGBTQ movement is seen as an extremist organisation. Putin's move has been seen as an attempt to revive two similar flopped music contests from the Soviet era. Communist Russia tried to set up a competition also called Intervision in the 1960s. This was also aimed to bring together its allies in Eastern Europe and across the world, like Cuba. Intervision ran between 1965 and 1968, and later between 1977 and 1980. It is unclear if it will use its bizarre communist-era voting system when TV viewers turned their lights on or off to cast votes, with the results measured by electricity consumption. The 2025 version of the competition will reportedly showcase "traditional universal, spiritual and family values". This would be a sharp contrast to the flamboyance, art, and colour brought through Eurovision - like it's 2024 winner Nemo from Switzerland. 6 Putin's media said that Americans will compete in the contest Credit: AP 6 The Intervision Song Contest was the Eastern Bloc's version of Eurovision Credit: East2West 6 Russia was banned from Eurovision in 2022 after Putin invaded Ukraine Credit: Alamy It is believed that Putin wants to relaunch the competition to separate Russia from what he says is the West's continued lack of respect for religious values and moral attitudes. A Russian planning document said: "Artists may not perform songs that call for violence, humiliate the honour and dignity of society, and it is required that political themes in the lyrics are completely excluded." Intervision will also aim to be 'developing international cultural and humanitarian cooperation', according to his presidential decree. This decree also claimed "the contest will be open for participation of all countries that wish to do so". Intervision is reportedly set to give performers four minutes on stage to sing in whatever language they like, according to documents seen by Reuters. The winner will get prize money and go on tour. It is not known if Putin will seek to sing at the contest, as he famously did in 2010, performing Blueberry Hill at a live charity event in St Petersburg. The dictator's rendition went viral, as he sang in front of guests including Hollywood stars like Goldie Hawn, Kevin Costner, and Sharon Stone. Putin previously announced he wanted to stage the World Festival of Friendship in 2024 as an alternative to the Olympics - which Russia has also been excluded from. The tyrant postponed the competition by one year - and then indefinitely in a humiliating U-turn. The country has taken part in Eurovision 23 times since 1994. Russia was banned from Eurovision in 2022 after Putin sent tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine. The same year that Putin annexed Crimea from Ukraine, an Austrian drag queen popularly known as "the bearded lady," won Eurovision in 2014. This is thought to have been a turning point in Putin's desire to fully separate his country from Western values.
