Eurovision fans go wild as Celine Dion 'rehearses' to perform at the grand final
The singer's poor health has stopped her from performing but after her triumph at the Paris Olympics, she might make it to Eurovision
Eurovision fans are going wild at the prospect of Celine Dion performing in Switzerland at the grand final of the contest later this month. A Swiss news website has reported that there is an 'agreement in principle' for the singer to take part in Basel, in just over a week's time.
There have been rumours about her involvement for months but now rehearsals for the orchestra are said to have taken place for Celine's performance in the arena, using a stand-in vocalist.
The peak excitement is because Celine, 57, officially withdrew from live performances in 2022, having revealed she was suffering from stiff person syndrome, a debilitating condition which causes muscle spasms.
Despite this, the international superstar made a comeback to sing at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where her performance of Hymne à l'amour from the Eiffel Tower was widely hailed as the highlight of the Opening Ceremony.
Celine is particularly loved by the Swiss public having been the last act to bring them victory at Eurovision. She competed for the country in 1988 with the song Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi and her triumph was the last time the country finished in first place until Nemo's win last year with The Code.
It is thought that while the French-Canadian singer is gearing up to perform on the stage at St. Jakobshalle, an option remains in place for her to withdraw, if she needs to, for health reasons.
No official confirmation has yet come from organisers the European Broadcasting Union, but either way her victory from 37 years ago, when she was just 20, is expected to be marked with a filmed tribute during one of the semi-finals.
Edi Estermann, communications boss for Eurovision 2025, said that while they would be thrilled to have Celine perform, her health must come first. She said: 'Céline will, of course, always be connected to Swiss Eurovision history and is a part of it. We would love to have her on the show and are in contact with her. But her health comes first. It's still open for us.'
One fan said it would be 'the moment of the decade' while another agreed: 'It was a miracle she was even able to perform at the Olympics. If she can appear here too it'll be something very special indeed.'
A third fan added: 'If she wants to participate I'd be overjoyed to see her in whatever capacity she's comfortable with.'

Diana Brown also wasn't keen, sharing: 'Love Morrisons, love Toblerone, but would never buy one that big and for that amount of money.' According to Morrisons, the Swiss milk chocolate bar is £19.99 cheaper with a More Card than it is at alternative retailers such as Amazon, where it costs £79.99. Morrisons is going hard on supersizing things for Father's Day. As well as the giant Toblerone, the retailer is also selling a Footlong sausage roll for Father's Day and both of these are available in stores until June 15. Mad Vlad's mouthpiece media made the bizarre claim that Americans would sing in the Intervision 2025 Song Contest, Russia's bootleg version of the iconic competition. A Russian planning document said: "Artists may not perform songs that call for violence, humiliate the honour and dignity of society, and it is required that political themes in the lyrics are completely excluded." Intervision will also aim to be 'developing international cultural and humanitarian cooperation', according to his presidential decree. This decree also claimed "the contest will be open for participation of all countries that wish to do so". Intervision is reportedly set to give performers four minutes on stage to sing in whatever language they like, according to documents seen by Reuters. The winner will get prize money and go on tour. It is not known if Putin will seek to sing at the contest, as he famously did in 2010, performing Blueberry Hill at a live charity event in St Petersburg. The dictator's rendition went viral, as he sang in front of guests including Hollywood stars like Goldie Hawn, Kevin Costner, and Sharon Stone. Putin previously announced he wanted to stage the World Festival of Friendship in 2024 as an alternative to the Olympics - which Russia has also been excluded from. The tyrant postponed the competition by one year - and then indefinitely in a humiliating U-turn. The country has taken part in Eurovision 23 times since 1994. Russia was banned from Eurovision in 2022 after Putin sent tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine. The same year that Putin annexed Crimea from Ukraine, an Austrian drag queen popularly known as "the bearded lady," won Eurovision in 2014. This is thought to have been a turning point in Putin's desire to fully separate his country from Western values.
