Johnson sentenced to 25 years to life for murder

Yahoo6 days ago
PLATTSBURGH — Chazz Johnson has been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for the murder of a Plattsburgh man last year.
Johnson, 25, was handed down the sentence in Clinton County Court on Monday for shooting and killing Marcus Dixon, 31, in the early morning hours on Sept. 3, 2024, Clinton County District Attorney Andrew Wylie announced.
The murder occurred following an altercation in downtown Plattsburgh between Dixon and Erica Colon, Johnson's co-defendant and girlfriend. The district attorney's office said that after the altercation, Colon and Johnson tracked down Dixon, who was walking near his residence, and Johnson shot Dixon three times at close range. Johnson and Colon then fled the area in Colon's car.
Johnson was transported to the University of Vermont Healthcare Network at Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The shooting happened near 137 Cornelia St. in the city of Plattsburgh.
In April, Johnson pleaded guilty to one count of second degree murder, one count of second degree conspiracy and two counts of second degree criminal possession of a weapon for his role in the shooting.
Colon pleaded guilty to second degree conspiracy in April as well. She was sentenced to 2 to 6 years in prison on July 10.
At Johnson's sentencing Monday, the district attorney's office said Dixon's sister addressed the court and described how his death has left their family 'shattered.'
She also described how, despite a difficult upbringing, Dixon had managed to become the first in their family to graduate from high school and college and his dreams of one day working in law enforcement.
District Attorney Wylie and Assistant District Attorney Jeffrey C. Kehm prosecuted the case.
The District Attorney's Office sought the maximum sentence under the agreement, and Kehm stressed the trivial nature of the events leading to the murder and argued that Johnson had no remorse for his actions and was a threat to the community.
In addition to the 25 years to life sentence, Johnson, who was represented by Tucker Stancliff, was assessed a $300 surcharge, a $25 crime victim assistance fee and must provide a DNA sample and a $50 DNA databank fee.

Police say 3 killed, 10 injured in the Turks and Caicos Islands' first mass shooting

Three young men were killed and 10 others injured at a popular nightspot in the Turks and Caicos Islands in what authorities called the British territory's first mass shooting in recent history. At least four suspects were involved in the shooting early Sunday on the island of Providenciales, but no one has been arrested, according to Police Commissioner Fitz Bailey, who called it 'deeply disturbing.' 'We are now having a gangland-type slaying, and a lot of this gang violence seems to be concentrated in our Haitian communities,' Premier Charles Washington Misick told a press conference. He called on the Haitian community to cooperate with police, saying some of them know how guns are being smuggled into the Turks and Caicos Islands. 'What is happening here is unlike anything we've ever seen before,' he said. 'This is not a situation we should accept.' The shooting comes as the archipelago cracks down on illegal immigration. An estimated 10,900 Haitians live in the Turks and Caicos Islands, representing a third of the territory's population. Around 80% of Haitians live in Providenciales, and 20% have permanent residency, according to the United Nations humanitarian affairs office. Acting Gov. Anya Williams said the hospital in Providenciales was on lockdown to protect those being treated for their injuries. She said at least two of those injured were flown overseas for further treatment.

Multiple emergency vehicles, including several ambulances, were seen outside the casino on Monday. Police haven't said how many people were injured. 'My heart breaks for the victims, their families, and our entire community. Reno is strong — but we are not immune to the epidemic of gun violence gripping this nation,' Reno City Councilmember Devon Reese said in a social media post.

‘Bonnie and Clyde' couple who planned brutal rape of young children jailed

A couple who dubbed themselves Bonnie and Clyde have been jailed for planning and fantasising about the 'brutal' rape and sexual assault of young children under the age of 12. Stuart Compton, 46, and his partner, Tracy Turner, 52, sent each other thousands of messages planning the depraved abuse of two girls and a boy over a two-year period. Merthyr Crown Court heard their sick plan failed after an online dating app informed police of concerns about Compton, and the pair were arrested. Sentencing the couple on Monday, Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke, the Recorder of Cardiff, handed Compton a life sentence, while Turner was given 12 years in jail, with a further two years on extended licence. Compton must serve a minimum term of seven years in prison before he can apply to the parole board for release. Addressing Compton, she said: 'Unless and until the parole board considers it safe to release you, you will remain in prison.' At an earlier hearing, the couple, who referred to each other as Bonnie and Clyde in messages, both pleaded guilty to six counts of arranging sex with a child. Compton also pleaded guilty to six counts of making indecent images, and Turner, who is a hospital operating assistant, admitted two counts of the same offence. Bonnie and Clyde were outlaws who gained notoriety in the 1930s for a series of bank robberies in America. The judge said messages showed they had discussed 'over and over again' their desires to rape children and their conversations 'made clear that this was not fantasy'. The couple had planned to carry out the acts, with Ms Lloyd-Clarke saying they had 'carefully identified' a location for one of the rapes to take place. 'You were both sexually aroused by the idea of raping a child,' she said. She added: 'You both deny your sexual interest in children, you both minimise your offending.' The couple must also inform the police of any names or addresses they use and are barred from working with children and vulnerable groups. Compton, from Cathays, and Turner, from Roath, both Cardiff, had denied a string of other offences, including conspiracy to murder, conspiracy to rape and conspiracy to kidnap, which were ordered to lie on the file.
