Air India plane in fatal crash had recently flown between New Delhi and Tokyo
CAIRO (Mainichi) -- The Air India aircraft that fatally crashed in Ahmedabad, northwestern India, on June 12 had been used for round-trip flights between New Delhi and Tokyo's Haneda Airport two days before the accident, according to data from the flight tracking website Flightradar24. Of the 242 people onboard the flight, only one passenger survived. The cause of the crash remains unclear, and it is not yet known whether there were any mechanical issues with the aircraft. According to Indian media and other sources, the plane that crashed was a Boeing 787-8. Flightradar24 data shows that the aircraft had departed New Delhi on the night of June 9, landed at Haneda Airport on the morning of June 10, and returned to New Delhi later that day. On June 11, it was used for a round-trip flight between New Delhi and Paris, France. On June 12, the plane arrived in Ahmedabad from New Delhi in the morning. Chinese Fighter Jet Flies Dangerously Close to MSDF Aircraft; Japan Expresses ‘Serious Concern,' Urges China to Prevent Recurrence

A Chinese fighter jet flew dangerously close to a Maritime Self-Defense Force P-3C patrol aircraft, flying just 45 meters from the P-3C after taking off from the Shandong aircraft carrier sailing in the Pacific Ocean, Japan's Defense Ministry said Wednesday. The Chinese jet also flew right in front of the P-3C, which was monitoring the carrier. The Chinese Navy currently has two aircraft carriers deployed in the Pacific, the Shandong and the Liaoning, and dangerous flights by carrier-based aircraft have been confirmed. The ministry said the P-3C was followed by China's J-15 fighter jet, which took off from the Shandong, over international waters south of Miyakojima Island in Okinawa Prefecture on Saturday and Sunday. The P-3C was followed for about 40 minutes from around 10:30 a.m. on Saturday and for about 80 minutes from around 2 p.m. on Sunday. The P-3C maintained a safe distance from the Shandong, but a J-15 jet approached and moved away while constantly staying within visual range of the P-3C. A J-15 jet, which was carrying what appeared to be a missile, got close multiple times and came within about 45 meters of the Japanese aircraft while flying at the same altitude as the P-3C on the left on Saturday and on the right on Sunday. In another maneuver on Sunday, a J-15 flying at the same altitude of the P-3C flew about 900 meters in front of the Japanese aircraft. No damage was reported for the MSDF aircraft, but a ministry official said, 'There was a risk of the P-3C's engine malfunctioning due to fighter jet exhaust.' The ministry announced Monday it had confirmed that the Shandong and the Liaoning were operating simultaneously in the Pacific Ocean for the first time, prompting the SDF to keep monitoring the situation. In the past, Chinese military aircraft have approached SDF aircraft over the East China Sea, coming within about 30 meters in May and June 2014.

A Chinese military aircraft had a near miss with a Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force patrol plane over the high seas in the Pacific, flying just 45 meters away after taking off from a moving aircraft carrier, the Japanese Defense Ministry said Wednesday. China's J-15 warplane from the aircraft carrier Shandong made other dangerous maneuvers on Saturday and Sunday, such as passing in front of an MSDF P-3C aircraft at the same altitude and with a distance of about 900 meters between the planes, the ministry said, adding that the government lodged a protest with China and demanded an end to such flights. Although there was no damage to the Japanese plane or injuries among its crew, Japan "expressed serious concerns" to China since "these abnormal approaches by a Chinese military plane may cause an accidental collision," the ministry said. The announcement came after the ministry said Monday it has confirmed for the first time two Chinese aircraft carriers, the Shandong and the Liaoning, operating at the same time in the Pacific last weekend, making Tokyo more vigilant against Beijing's maritime assertiveness. The Shandong was sailing through waters 550 kilometers southeast of Miyako Island in the southern prefecture of Okinawa on Saturday, and two days later conducted takeoff and landing drills involving its fighter jets and helicopters north of Japan's southernmost Okinotori Island within Japan's exclusive economic zone. Meanwhile, the Liaoning was seen in waters about 300 km southwest of the easternmost island of Minamitori on Saturday in Japan's EEZ, before moving southwest outside the EEZ and conducting similar takeoff and landing exercises on Sunday. The Liaoning was observed beyond what is known as the "second island chain" stretching from Japan's Izu Islands to Guam, a Japanese government official said.
