Ravens vs. Cowboys: 5 Under-the-radar players to watch in Week 2 of preseason

With key starters sitting out, it'll be another opportunity for select veterans and rookies to carve out a role on a loaded roster with very few holes or opportunities.
The Ravens are in Dallas for an intriguing preseason matchup against the popular Cowboys on Saturday night. The Ravens and Cowboys have only faced each other once in the preseason before Saturday's matchup. Their second scheduled preseason game in 2020 was cancelled due to the pandemic.
With key starters sitting out, it'll be another opportunity for select veterans and rookies to carve out a role on a loaded roster with very few holes or opportunities.
With kickoff fast approaching, we're looking at five under-the-radar players to watch.
DB Reuben Lowery
Ravens' undrafted free agent cornerback Reuben Lowery has caught the attention of head coach John Harbaugh, and the versatile defensive back is inching towards a coveted roster spot in the deep Baltimore secondary.
Lowery has been making plays that could push a key starter or contributors onto the roster bubble at Ravens training camp.
LB Jay Higgins
Undrafted inside linebacker Jay Higgins IV helped his bid to make the roster in the preseason opener with an interception, three tackles, and two pass breakups. Higgins played plenty of special teams at Iowa, which helps his chances. I'm interested to see what he does against Dallas.
RB Rasheen Ali
Baltimore didn't draft a running back and only has four players on the roster at the position. Henry is an All-Pro, Justice Hill is a solid No. 2 running back, and Keaton Mitchell provides a home run threat. Ali needs a strong preseason to warrant the Ravens carrying four running backs.
WR Malik Cunningham
Baltimore has ten wide receivers on the roster after selecting Colorado's LaJohntay Wester in Round 6. Cunningham is the only player in the position who is not a natural wide receiver but offers special-teams abilities. Cunningham needs an intense training camp to warrant a roster spot over Dayton Wade, Anthony Miller, and Keith Kirkwood.
DT-C.J. Okoye
Okoye, a Nigerian native, first joined the Chargers as part of the International Player Pathway Program. He had a sack in his first organized football game in the preseason. He'll compete in a position group that includes Nnamdi Madubuike, Travis Jones, John Jenkins, and Jayson Jones.
OL Corey Bullock
Bullock was an honorable mention All-Big Ten after starting 11 games for the Terrapins in 2023. According to Pro Football Focus, Bullock was ranked as the second-highest-rated pass-blocking guard in the Big Ten conference, with a 79.6 grade via the Terrapins' official website. After a season spent on the Ravens' practice squad, he'll look to carve out a backup role.

Sophie Cunningham ruled out of Fever's overtime win over Sun after going down with a knee injury

Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham has been ruled out of Sunday's game against the Connecticut Sun with a knee injury, marking the latest injury to a Fever squad that has already been decimated. The injury occurred during the second quarter when Connecticut guard Bria Hartley drove to the basket but fell and collided with Cunningham's leg on her way down. Cunningham stayed down clutching her right knee and visibly in pain as the rest of the team went to the other side of the court. She was helped off the court and into the locker room, wearing a towel over her head. Cunningham's injury is just the latest for the Fever, who have lost most of their guards due to injury. Caitlin Clark has missed most of the season with a groin injury, while the other two point guards — Aari McDonald and veteran Sydney Colson — both suffered season-ending injuries in a loss to the Phoenix Mercury earlier this month. Colson went down with an ACL tear, while McDonald suffered a broken bone in her foot. Last week, the Fever signed veteran guard Odyssey Sims to a hardship contract to help replenish their point guard depth. Sims made her first start for Indiana on Sunday. After Cunningham went down, the Fever battled back to a 99-93 overtime win. Despite Connecticut being up by as many as 21 points, Indiana forced OT after a stellar 32-point fourth quarter. Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell finished with 38 points, tying a season high; 34 of those points came after halftime.

Two Ravens who deserve another cap tip after recent preseason win

How about another round of applause for a pair of Ravens? In the end, the game doesn't count. Many of its highlights and its final score will be forgotten in a month. No one cares. We've all been waiting for the Baltimore Ravens to throw on the pads and hit someone on someone else's for several months now. Nothing beats the feeling of seeing that purple, black, and metallic gold. Week 1 vs. the Buffalo Bills nears, so everything feels like an appetizer, even a win over the Dallas Cowboys that, in the end, won't be stored on the win-loss ledger. Tyler Loop, Devontez Walker, and Keyon Martin were among the stars and MVPs, but with a little time on our hands, there's more love to go around. Baltimore committed too many penalties (ten), and after seeing mistakes lead to a loss the last time we saw them, no one wants to see two turnovers, but thanks to a win, we're all feeling positive. How about another glance at two guys who follow are also deserving of a tip of the cap and another round of applause? Rasheen Ali, running back Baltimore's 3.8 yards-per-carry average wasn't indicative of how good this rushing attack was during the second preseason game. The Ravens racked up 148 yards on 39 attempts. Leading the way was Rasheen Ali. Some plays were better than others, but overall, he earns a passing grade. He finished this one as the game's top rusher, 62 yards on 19 carries. That leads us to his offensive coordinator. He certainly played his role in helping the youngster to that type of effort. Todd Monken, offensive coordinator Sometimes, we don't give these assistant coaches enough credit, but after naming the defensive coordinator, Zach Orr, as one of the game's top performers, it felt only right to share some love for the offensive coordinator leading the way on the other side of the ball. No one cares that we're talking about backups and roster hopefuls. Dallas also played their backups. That sounds like an even playing field by definition. Baltimore stacked 251 yards passing and 148 yards on the ground without guys like Lamar Jackson, Zay Flowers, and Derrick Henry. They chewed up 40:11 of the 60-minute game clock. As far as we're concerned, that's worthy of a game ball in an effort that won't count but gives several Ravens some confidence.

College football season kicks off with thrilling matchups and high stakes

After a long and busy season for college athletics, the football season arrives with a host of tantalizing angles. A look at some of the big games among the top teams, what's at stake and the hurdles that must be cleared on the way to the national championship. When does college football start? A handful of games kick off the season Aug. 23, with the most intriguing a Big 12 matchup between No. 22 Iowa State and No. 17 Kansas State that will take place in Dublin, Ireland. Both teams are considered contenders in their wide-open conference. Kansas State quarterback Avery Johnson threw for a school-record 25 touchdowns last season and ran for seven more. Iowa State played in the conference title game last year. The following weekend has some doozies: No. 9 LSU faces No. 4 Clemson, No. 6 Notre Dame visits No. 10 Miami and defending champion No. 3 Ohio State hosts No. 1 Texas. Before the College Football Playoff expanded to 12 teams last year, a game like that might have been make or break. Now, teams have second chances and can afford three (maybe four) losses and still get in. Who are the favorites? The AP Top 25 and the coaches poll both list Texas as the preseason No. 1 team and the Longhorns are currently the favorite (plus-450, or 9-2 odds) to win the national championship, according to BetMGM Sportsbook. Ohio State is right behind them (plus-525), followed by No. 5 Georgia and No. 2 Penn State (both 7-1) and then Clemson and No. 7 Oregon (both 9-1). Key games to watch Preseason No. 7 Oregon visits No. 2 Penn State on Sept. 27 in a rematch of last season's Big Ten title game. Penn State also has a game against Ohio State on Nov. 1. .... Speaking of the Buckeyes, the national title helped them get over their fourth straight loss to preseason No. 14 Michigan. That rematch is in its usual spot, Thanksgiving weekend, Nov. 29 at the Big House. ... TCU at North Carolina (Bill Belichick's coaching debut) on Sept. 1 ... Oklahoma vs. Texas on Oct. 11 ... USC at No. 6 Notre Dame on Oct. 18 ... LSU at No. 8 Alabama on Nov. 8 ... No. 11 Arizona State at Colorado on Nov. 22. The 12-team playoff The College Football Playoff remains at 12 teams this year with one significant tweak: Unlike last year, conference champions will not be guaranteed a bye in the first round. But the best five conference champions are still guaranteed spots in the tournament. Seeds 5-8 will host first-round games against 9-12 on Dec. 19 (one game) and Dec. 20 (three games). The quarterfinals will be at the Cotton Bowl on Dec. 1, then at the Orange, Rose and Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1. The semifinals will be Jan. 8 at the Fiesta Bowl and Jan. 9 at the Peach Bowl. The title game will take place at Hard Rock Stadium outside of Miami on Jan. 19. Heisman watch Keep in mind that last year's winner, Travis Hunter, didn't show up in the watch list in this very space last year. With that said, the early favorites include quarterbacks Arch Manning (Texas), Garrett Nussmeier (LSU) and Cade Klubnik (Clemson), along with Ohio State receiver Jeremiah Smith and, for those looking for a longshot, Alabama receiver Ryan Williams.
