Ahmedabad, New Delhi: When Air India Flight AI171 fell from the skies just moments after takeoff from Ahmedabad, the wreckage did not only raise questions about the safety of Boeing's Dreamliner fleet. It fuelled a debate – what do grieving families actually receive when disaster strikes at 30,000 feet?
Onboard the ill-fated flight headed to London's Gatwick were 242 souls – 230 passengers, 10 crew members and two pilots. Among them was Gujarat's former Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. For Boeing, this marks the first time the Dreamliner has suffered a crash. But the company is no stranger to tragedy. Its 737 Max series has crashed multiple times, killing over 500 people between 2018 and 2024 – even after major design overhauls.
So, in the face of such devastation, what is the price of a life lost mid-air?
For international flights like AI171, compensation is governed by the Montreal Convention of 1999. India signed on years ago. Under this treaty, the families of deceased or injured passengers are entitled to up to 128,821 Special Drawing Rights – a complicated financial term that roughly works out to Rs 1.4 crore per passenger.
But here is where it gets important. If it is proven that the crash happened due to airline negligence – say, a technical fault ignored, improper maintenance or failure to follow safety procedures, then there is no upper limit. The compensation can skyrocket.
This payout is usually split between the airline and its insurance partner. But for families, no amount can fill the void.
Who pays the compensation – the airline or the insurance company? The short answer is both. In most cases, the airline is responsible for initiating compensation under international aviation laws. But the actual funds usually come from a combination of the airline and its insurance company. That is why major airlines are required to carry large-scale liability coverage.
There is also another layer – travel insurance. Passengers who opted for personal coverage can unlock additional payouts. These can range from Rs 25 lakh to Rs 1 crore for accidental death and up to Rs 10 lakh for permanent disability.
While the Montreal Convention specifically covers international routes, India's Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) recommends that airlines apply similar compensation frameworks for domestic passengers as well. In recent years, many Indian carriers have voluntarily aligned with this approach, offering matching coverage to families of victims.
For some families, this insurance becomes the only financial cushion in the middle of emotional collapse.
As investigators dig through the charred remains of AI171, aviation analysts are already saying what many do not want to admit – this may have been a man-made disaster. A failure not of machines but of judgment, oversight and accountability.
Families are mourning. Legal teams are mobilising. And the question echoing through India's airports and global aviation boards is this: Why was not this prevented? Because when a plane falls from the sky, it is not only metal that hits the ground, it is also the trust.

State to install smart power meters in phased manner
Panaji: The state electricity department, through its contractor Digismart Networks Pvt Ltd, has begun implementing the smart meter project for the state, where 7.5 lakh electrical meters will be replaced with smart meters. The first smart meter is likely to be installed after six months, electricity department superintending engineer Mayur Hede told TOI . In the first phase, the electricity department's transformers and feeders' meters will be replaced, followed by govt offices and govt quarters. In the next phase, industrial and commercial consumers' meters will be replaced, followed by domestic consumers — the largest chunk of users in the state. 'Users will be able to check the actual consumption, sitting anywhere in the world. Consumers will also have access to daily, weekly, and fortnightly consumption records on the app. The app will alert the user in case the load increases above the sanctioned load and if one needs to apply for an increase in load,' Hede said. During power failure, the restoration time will be cut as the blackout will be communicated directly to the central server, he said. The system will also inform the department about the voltage profile of consumers in case of low or high voltage and help improve the quality and reliability of power. It will also help the department accurately forecast the load requirement, which will help in better load scheduling, the superintending engineer said. 'As we buy power from the power exchange, we have to be very accurate. If we ask for more power, we have to pay for it even if we don't consume it. Similarly, if we ask for less power, we will have to pay charges for overdrawal.' First a survey will be conducted to check the feasibility of installing the meters depending on the location. College teachers await 7th pay panelimplementation
Ludhiana: The 7th pay commission is yet to be implemented in aided colleges, despite Punjab govt promising to do so three years ago. The govt has been making tall claims about bringing about a revolution in education, but nothing has been done about higher education, members of Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union (PCCTU) have alleged. Varun Goel of the Union recently said though the Centre is considering bringing about the 8th pay commission, Punjab govt is yet to implement even the 7th pay. "It is shameful that the CM had made the announcement on Sept 5, 2022 in Anandpur Sahib, which happens to be the constituency of education minister Harjot Bains, that from October that year the 7th pay commission would be implemented in the aided colleges of Punjab, but nothing has been done until now." More than 2,000 sactioned teaching posts out of 3,600 are lying vacant in aided colleges across Punjab. One lakh more houses to be included in tax net: GIS survey
Kanpur: Around one lakh houses have been identified to be included in the house tax net in the GIS survey conducted by the Kanpur Municipal Corporation, the additional municipal commissioner Jagdish Yadav informed Mayor Pramila Pandey in a meeting of the revenue department held here on Friday. Following the mayor's directives, municipal commissioner Sudhir Kumar directed the officers regarding notices sent to houses and the corresponding recovery figures. Another meeting will be organised to review the number of major defaulters served notices, and comparative recovery details. Also under consideration will be the number of houses out of the one lakh covered in the GIS survey that have received notices, the recovery figures and other related issue. Authorities have stated that penal action will be initiated in case of any laxity. During the meeting, chief tax assessment officer Anirudh Singh stated that in financial year 2024-25, revenue of Rs 10 crore was recovered in June while in current financial year, revenue received so far was Rs 32 crore.
