How an innovative literacy project is transforming young lives
Amid a sluggish government response, Astra Primary School started a grassroots literacy project that is transforming young lives and attracting families in search of better educational opportunities for their children.
Led by principal Helma Boggenpoel, a literacy initiative centre was launched at the school in Bethelsdorp, Gqeberha, in 2019.
The programme has reshaped classroom culture and sparked a love of books and reading among the children.
Boggenpoel said northern areas residents who had witnessed a positive change in the pupils' attitudes now wanted to enrol their own children at Astra Primary.
However, space is limited.
'T he school has partnered with United Through Sport for more than 10 years, and they go out and seek sponsorship for the school,' Boggenpoel said.
'The interest was to capacitate the reading programme because, obviously, you know that reading plays a pivotal role in education.
'You cannot excel without reading and understanding.
'It was crucial for us to have such partnerships because of our few resources in our community.'
Boggenpoel said that through partnerships with the Masinyusane nonprofit, the school now had a librarian and literacy coaches.
'The goal of the project is to take those struggling and push them up to be on par with those already excelling, and we work with those pupils for the year.
'I'm a language teacher and I can see a huge improvement, and the love of reading has become quite evident.
'Learners have access to the library during breaks and during reading periods. Teachers can take them to the library and the learners can also take out books from the library.
'We have a reading period where we say, drop down and read.
'So that period, the whole school reads, and I will walk through the classes and see. Even maths teachers and learners are supposed to read.
'Whether it's that textbook of that subject, they must read, because I mean they are supposed to be able to read anything that is a reading material, not just a language reading book.
'So we do create an environment for the love of reading, and there is an improvement.
'Some parents are actually inquiring why their child is not involved ... but they don't understand. We explain to them who we target for the programme.'
Boggenpoel said the project had added value to the school and influenced the children's schoolmates.
'It's rubbing off on other learners. Learners are starting to write and comprehend more.
'Because I'm a language teacher, I would go into the doing word and into the action word ... and they can identify.
'So, the teacher must still teach the learner with a barrier. We've not handed our work to the youth working in the library.
'Our parents here are supportive. Initially, some were in denial regarding their children's abilities, but they've come around.'
Boggenpoel said there was an average of 35 pupils per class at Astra Primary though a few classes had more children.

Zuma sacks Shivambu as MK secretary-general
MK party secretary general Floyd Shivambu. (Photo: Luba Lesolle/Gallo Images) In a statement issued by the party on Tuesday, The party cited Section 3(j) under 'Offences' which prohibits members from undertaking international trips and engaging in activities that conflict with the agenda of the MK party or its allied organisations. 'The trip was not an officially sanctioned programme of the organisation or the president, which therefore goes against the constitution of the party,' the statement read. Zuma said the national officials found that Shivambu's visit to Malawi contradicted the values and prescripts of MK and had implications for its image and principles. In March, Malawi's chief resident magistrate granted South Africa's request to extradite Bushiri and his wife Mary, who face charges in the country after skipping bail in 2020. Tuesday's statement confirmed that the MK party had received concerns from civil society regarding Shivambu's conduct. 'The president and the national officials were left with no other option but to act swiftly in addressing this matter,' it said. The decision comes amid growing internal pressure within the party to remove Shivambu from his position, a move his supporters said was In recent weeks, multiple senior party members and provincial leaders had raised concerns about his leadership style, decision-making, and perceived unilateral actions. Some criticised what they described as a lack of consultation on key organisational matters, while others accused him of prioritising personal political manoeuvring over the collective interest of the party. These tensions had been building since April and intensified after news of his Malawi visit surfaced. The jaunt was viewed by some as the final act of defiance, prompting calls from within the party's national working committees for immediate action. Despite his instrumental role in building the party's mobilisation structures during its early stages, Shivambu's relationship with sections of the leadership had deteriorated. Last week a letter from the party was leaked by his opposers regarding his removal as secretary general. Shivambu will now serve in the National Assembly. The statement said his redeployment is aimed at strengthening the MK party caucus in parliament, where it serves as the official opposition. This move has been viewed by some as 'strategic', with Shivambu expected to strengthen the party in parliament after the removal of Mzwanele Manyi as chief whip last week. Shivambu, a former member of parliament and deputy president for the Economic Freedom Fighters, joined the MK party last year and was later appointed national organiser and then secretary general. Zuma acknowledged Shivambu's contribution to the party and said discussions were held with him regarding the redeployment. Shivambu has accepted the decision. 'The national officials have come to a decision to redeploy Commander Floyd Shivambu as the secretary general of the party, and redeploy him to the National Assembly,' the statement said. The party did not announce who would replace Shivambu as secretary general.

Woman thrives in farming after failing matric
'I noticed a lack of vegetables in supermarkets so I took the opportunity,' she told TimesLIVE. 'They were waiting for trucks that deliver once a week from other provinces and I thought they would order from me every day instead of waiting for the morning delivery truck. 'At first I thought it was an easy way of making quick cash. I was looking for a livelihood, then I started loving farming and understanding it.' With the help of her husband, Kwetana owns a 13ha farm in Mthatha specialising in seedling, poultry, piggery and crop farming. She supplies products to supermarkets, hotels, schools, restaurants and street vendors. 'He [husband] was funding me with his teaching salary. He believed in me and is my mentor.' The community gave her the land in exchange for creating jobs. 'The business has grown and I never thought it'd be this big. I have 28 permanent employees, 22 students doing in-service training, four interns and 12 casual workers.' As a young black woman in agriculture, Kwetana faced numerous challenges, including being undermined by supermarkets and government departments. She recalled being asked 'who sent you?' when seeking funding or help. Flooding in 2021 also swept her farm twice, but Kwetana persevered, believing in herself with her husband's support. 'Those things were hurtful. I reached a point where I was no longer looking for funding and did my own thing. I don't know how many times I fell and got back up by myself. Those challenges made me strong.'

'He was more than what the cameras saw': touching moments from Presley Chweneyagae's memorial
Oros Mampofu's wife Bianca Carmichael, who was Presley's sister-in-law, delivered a moving tribute. 'I stand before you today with a heart full of sorrow, gratitude and respect. I speak on behalf of Presley's beloved wife and her entire Kirk family. Presley was not just a husband, a son-in-law or a brother-in-law — he was a force, a light. A presence so strong that you always knew when he entered the room. Not because he demanded attention but because he carried such quiet power, charm and grace. 'To the world, he was Presley Chweneyagae the actor, the artist, the man whose talent moved many nations from his unforgettable role in Tsotsi , to his role as the opulent Cobrizi. He gave voice to stories that needed to be told. 'But to us, he was more than what the cameras captured. He was a protector, a husband who loved deeply, a father who was gentle and proud, a brother-in-law who made us proud. 'It is hard to imagine a world without his laughter, his sharp wit or his comforting presence. But as we grieve, we also celebrate the legacy he leaves behind, not only in film and television but in the lives he touched, the hearts he warmed and the inspiration he sparked in the next generation of artists.'
