So close! Mighty Eagles' effort falls short in MCG thriller
A stunning run-down tackle on fourth-gamer Tom Gross in the dying seconds has left West Coast two points short of their first victory of the season.
Gross, who came on as a final-quarter substitute, was run down at centre half-forward with 30 seconds to play by Tom Brown, who left the Eagles with their heartbreaking ninth defeat of the season.

It was the final roll of the dice for the Eagles in the 11.15 (81) to 11.13 (79) defeat at the MCG on Sunday, which ensured the club remained on the bottom of the ladder.
It came at the end of a tense final term. Scores were level with five minutes to play before Tom Lynch missed a chance to give the Tigers a one-point lead.
Richmond locked the game down successfully, creating contest after contest before Kane McAuliffe kicked a behind with 100 seconds left on the clock to double their lead.
It might have been a contest of the two battling sides, but it was an epic clash which featured an incredible 15 lead changes.
The Eagles showed incredible improvement, tying the clearance count 35-35 after losing all previous eight but they dominated out of the centre which they won 16-9 which is where they managed to put on scoreboard pressure.
But at the end of the game, it was the Tigers who prevailed to hand the Eagles their 11th consecutive defeat and keep former Richmond caretaker coach Andrew McQualter winless at the head of the Eagles. Harley Reid of the Eagles celebrates kicking a goal. Credit: Quinn Rooney / Getty Images
McQualter continued to try to find his best midfield combination, starting forwards Liam Ryan (17 disposals and four clearances) in the centre square for the first bounce, while Tim Kelly and Brady Hough were up forward.
And the move worked, with Ryan adding a spark to their midfield through his pace and athleticism, complementing the relentless pressure of former Tiger Jack Graham (20 disposals and 14 tackles).
Unsurprisingly, Harley Reid also enjoyed the main stage, putting in his best performance of the season at the MCG to finish with 18 disposals, four clearances and a goal.
Early on it looked as if it may be a tough day for the Eagles when Matt Owies (two goals) missed a simple shot from straight in front which would've given the Eagles the perfect start.
The Tigers pounced at the other end, kicking the first three goals of the match to threaten an early onslaught.
Midfielder Tim Taranto (27 disposals and seven clearances) was nearly unstoppable, leading the way for the home side with 13 first-quarter disposals and a goal as Richmond dominated the contested possession count 39-24.
It took more than 28 minutes for the Eagles to finally kick a goal, with Jamie Cripps (three goals) snapping truly from the top of the goalsquare.

Jayden Hunt kicked the Eagles' second with only eight seconds left in the term to keep the Eagles hot on the heels of Richmond.
The Eagles then dominated from the centre clearance to lock the ball inside their forward half resulting in goals to Owies and Jake Waterman, giving them the lead.
Richmond debutant Thomas Sims broke the run with the first goal of his career and the game turned into an exciting goal-for-goal affair as the lead changed an incredible eight times for the term with the Tigers holding the slenderest of leads at half-time.
After a blistering second term, both teams tried to lock down more defensively and it seemingly suited the Eagles who upped the pressure.
Brown kicked the first goal of the second half to extend the Tigers' lead but the Eagles managed to lock the ball inside their forward half for the majority of the third quarter.
For all their effort though they kicked only two goals with misses from Tim Kelly, Matt Flynn and Jake Waterman letting the Tigers off the hook.
And this hurt them when Rhyan Mansell kicked his second excellent goal from on the run before skipper Toby Nankervis restored their lead on the verge of three-quarter time.

And Reid lifted his side with an inspirational running goal from 50m to somewhat silence the home fans.
Unfortunately, Reid then gave up a goal to Hugo Ralphsmith when he knocked the ball out of the Tigers' hand after he took a mark, conceding a 50m penalty which resulted in a major.
Returning forward-ruck Bailey Williams kept the Eagles in the game with his second goal, but both teams struggled to score in the final moments, with the game shut down and the Eagles on the wrong end of an epic encounter.

‘I'll be talking to him': Mal confirms interest in Tigers star as likely ‘top of list' Bears target revealed
Inaugural Perth coach Mal Meninga confirmed he will be 'talking' to Tigers hooker Apisai Koroisau after he said he would be 'definitely open' to playing for the Bears. FOX LEAGUE, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every game of every round in the 2025 NRL Telstra Premiership, LIVE with no ad-breaks during play. New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited-time offer. Meninga was officially appointed coach of the NRL's latest expansion team last week, with the Bears to enter the competition at the start of the 2027 season. With a coach in place, attention now turns to the marquee names the Bears could sign and it sounds like Koroisau could be a target. The Tigers hooker told Channel Nine he would 'definitely be open to it', although he then added he would 'love to keep going' at his current club. 'To be fair I've never seriously thought about it, mainly because I'd love to just finish off here at the Tigers and I'm in no rush to be going anywhere or sign any contracts,' he said. 'I haven't thought about it, not seriously anyway. For me it's Tigers if I can.' While those additional comments from Koroisau may ease some concerns in Tigerland, Meninga definitely took notice of his earlier ones and told Triple M he will 'be talking' to the veteran hooker. 'He did play for North Sydney Bears you know, he came through that system so I think that's another great story,' Meninga said. 'I'll be talking to him don't worry about that.' Koroisau is off-contract at the end of 2026 and will be allowed to talk to rival clubs from November 1. The Daily Telegraph's Brent Read tipped on Triple M that Koroisau will end up being one of many players who will strategically come off-contract around then in a bid to drive up their prices with the added competition of the Bears. 'They're (player agents— going to time blokes coming off contract to maximize that value, so there'll be players out there and there are players out there who are coming off at the end of '26, who I'd imagine will go to November 1,' Read said. Read went on to add that he expects Perth to target Super League teams and South African rugby union for talent, while also predicting Titans forward Tino Fa'asuamaleaui — who is signed until 2033 but can leave the club at the end of 2026 — will be 'at the top of the list' when it comes to NRL targets. 'He's got options every year of his deal. He's an obvious one who Mal's got a relationship with... Tino is probably at the top of the list,' Read said. 'Payne is the other obvious one but I think Payne will stay in Brisbane. There's some other guys... Luke Metcalf, Jaxon Purdue, Tyran Wishart, Herbie Farnworth. There are guys out there who are available as it stands on November 1.' Wishart was one player who Michael Ennis singled out during Melbourne's recent win against North Queensland as a priority target for Meninga. 'You get the feeling over the next couple of years as the expansion teams roll into town, the value of a Tyran Wishart, it is going to skyrocket,' Ennis said. 'Pick up the phone Mal.' Former Panthers and Sharks backrower Wade Graham, meanwhile, said on Triple M that the prospect of a player loan system should be something the NRL considers to help out expansion teams. He also pointed to previous successful examples, including Harry Grant's time with the Tigers and subsequent development at Melbourne, as evidence it could benefit the other clubs too. 'Every team has their roster in order and their projected five-year plan in order. They have their backups almost ready to go, but they're in behind (the starter),' Graham said. 'Look at Melbourne. They have Papenhuyzen and Hughes. They have Fa'alogo in behind and Jonah Pezet in behind and we saw with Harry Grant when he was behind Cameron Smith, the opportunity for him to be loaned out to the Wests Tigers. 'I just think it's an area we can look at. Other guys that come to mind... Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow at the Dolphins. We know Trai Fuller's an exceptional fullback and has done well in first grade. 'I think we need to think a little bit outside the box of how we manage two new teams coming in the competition and player depth.'

Would Utoikamanu be back in Blue if he was still a Tiger?
Would Stefano Utoikamanu have been selected for State of Origin if he had stayed at the Wests Tigers? Of course, it's a hypothetical question. It's also worth remembering that Utoikamanu made his NSW debut while at the Tigers, one of the few players to make the step up to interstate level from the joint-venture club. However, his failure to make a second appearance for the Blues by the end of 2024 allowed him to activate a release that eventually led him to Melbourne. After being an unused reserve in the opening game, a season-ending knee injury to Warriors forward Mitch Barnett has opened the door for Utoikamanu in game two. The front-rower is too diplomatic to be drawn into speculation over whether his chance would have arisen if he was still a Tiger. 'It's hard to say,' Utoikamanu said. 'The Tigers are going better now than we were last year, so I wouldn't know.' Maybe it's a question better directed at Terrell May, whose contributions since shifting from Bondi Junction to Concord are, at least statistically, as good as any prop in the game. Regardless, Utoikamanu concedes joining the Storm – especially now that Melbourne mentor Craig Bellamy and footy boss Frank Ponissi are in NSW camp – didn't hurt his chances of a Blues call-up. 'It was one of the things I looked at when I was going to leave the Wests Tigers,' he said. 'I feel like the Melbourne Storm have such a good system and being in it now, I'm happy I made the move and happy to be here.'
