‘EU rules unworkable': Meta says halting political advertising among bloc nations from October
Meta announced on Friday that it will be compelled to stop allowing political advertising across its platforms in the European Union starting in October. The company cited the EU's new Transparency and Targeting of Political Advertising (TTPA) regulation as being 'unworkable."
Meta described this as a challenging decision driven by the substantial operational difficulties and legal ambiguities introduced by the TTPA rules. The company emphasised that these obligations impose an unsustainable level of complexity and legal uncertainty for both advertisers and platform operators within the EU.

According to Meta, these regulations will ultimately have a negative impact on European users.
'We believe that personalised ads are critical to a wide range of advertisers, including those engaged on campaigns to inform voters about important social issues that shape public discourse,' Meta said.
'Regulations, like the TTPA, significantly undermine our ability to offer these services, not only impacting effectiveness of advertisers' outreach but also the ability of voters to access comprehensive information,' the company added.
'This is a difficult decision - one we've taken in response to the EU's incoming Transparency and Targeting of Political Advertising (TTPA) regulation, which introduces significant operational challenges and legal uncertainties,' it said.
The European Union legislation, called the Transparency and Targeting of Political Advertising (TTPA) regulation and which will apply from Oct. 10, was triggered by concerns about disinformation and foreign interference in elections across the 27-country bloc.
The EU law requires Big Tech companies to clearly label political advertising on their platforms, who paid for it and how much as well as which elections are being targeted or risk fines up to 6% of their annual turnover.

Meta picks ex-OpenAI researcher over Yann LeCun as chief scientist of AI superintelligence unit
Meta has been stealing away talent from its biggest rivals as it gears up to become a serious contender in the AI race. And now, after putting together a team, CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced that Shengjia Zhao, a former OpenAI researcher and one of the co-authors of the original ChatGPT paper, just been named Chief Scientist of Meta's newly minted Superintelligence AI who quietly joined Meta in June, was instrumental in OpenAI's early successes, from building the first reasoning model, o1, to helping shape ChatGPT itself. That o1 model, incidentally, is the very one that sparked the 'chain-of-thought' craze, later picked up by the likes of Google and CEO Mark Zuckerberg confirmed Zhao's promotion in a post on Threads, calling him 'our lead scientist from day one.' He went on to explain, 'Now that our recruiting is going well, and our team is coming together, we have decided to formalise his leadership role.' Zhao will now work directly under Alexandr Wang, the former Scale AI CEO who joined Meta in June as its Chief AI Officer. Wang has been tasked with nothing less than steering Meta towards artificial general intelligence (AGI), systems capable of reasoning and thinking at human or even superhuman Superintelligence Lab, which Meta unveiled in June 2025, is the centrepiece of this new ambition. It operates separately from FAIR, Meta's long-established AI research unit, which remains under the leadership of AI veteran Yann LeCun. SSI payment schedule August: When will you receive your social security checks?
The Social Security Administration (SSA) will soon be rolling out payments to beneficiaries for the month of August. Given the complexities of this month's calendar, there are a few changes and updates in terms of payment dates that those dependent on such grants must keep themselves aware of. Since August 3 falls on a Sunday and Labor Day falls on September 1, beneficiaries will be receiving two payments in August and possibly none the month after. However, due to it falling on a weekend, these payments will now be rolled out on August 1 itself. Since September 1 is Labor Day, payments for that month will be rolled on August 29. This change is important to keep track of so that beneficiaries don't get confused and are able to plan their expenses accordingly, as reported by EPR News. This process is undertaken over the last three Wednesdays of the month. • For those born from the 1st to 10 of any month, payments are given on the second Wednesday, i.e., August 14 • For those born from the 11th to 20th of any month, payments are given on the third Wednesday, i.e., August 21 • For those born from the 21st to the 31st of any month, payments are given on the fourth Wednesday, i.e., August 28 Direct deposits are usually transferred faster than paper checks since their mailing period consumes time. Beneficiaries must update their calendars and make sure their details are updated to receive payments on time.
