Lance McCullers Jr. becomes 17th Astros player to hit injured list

New York Times22-07-2025
PHOENIX — Nine days before the trade deadline, more attrition has hit the Houston Astros' starting rotation.
Right-hander Lance McCullers Jr. has a blister on his throwing hand and is back on the injured list for the third time this season, thrusting Houston's rotation further into a state of flux.

McCullers' stint on the 15-day injured list is backdated to July 20, meaning he is ineligible to be activated prior to the July 31 trade deadline. McCullers, who is making $17 million, is also the 17th Astro to hit the IL. No team has more injured players.
He joins six other Astros starting pitchers on the injured list. Two of them, Ronel Blanco and Hayden Wesneski, already underwent season-ending Tommy John surgery.
Cristian Javier, Spencer Arrighetti and Luis Garcia are all on minor-league rehab assignments, but are not expected to re-join the major-league rotation before the July 31 trade deadline, during which Houston is expected to actively pursue an established starter.
That plan would've stayed in place even if McCullers had remained healthy. After returning in May from a 915-day absence, McCullers owns a 6.90 ERA across his first 11 starts. He has failed to finish five innings during seven of them, putting untenable stress on an already depleted pitching staff.
McCullers collected just eight outs during his last start on Saturday at T-Mobile Park. He surrendered five hits, four earned runs and generated three whiffs from the 28 swings the Seattle Mariners took against him.
Opponents have a 50 percent hard-hit rate against McCullers, who is missing few bats and unable to locate any of his secondary pitches for strikes. McCullers is generating just a 20.3 percent chase rate — league average is 28.4 percent — and teams are whiffing just 24.5 percent of the time against him.

Teddy Bridgewater to sign with Buccaneers following suspension from high school coaching job

Teddy Bridgewater is making another NFL comeback, as Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht confirmed the team's plans to sign him. Bridgewater, 32, is coming out of retirement for the second time to join Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask. Licht confirmed to reporters on Tuesday that Bridgewater was in Tampa for a visit and that while no deal is official, the "intention" is to sign him. "We had some discussions about it, that it'd be a nice addition to the [quarterback] room, good for Baker. Experienced guy, obviously a smart, hell of high school coach – hell of a coach in general. But just a good addition just to have that wealth of experience there." Licht did not say that Bridgewater would step in to serve as the backup over Trask, but did say that the competition is still open. Bridgewater has played 10 seasons in the NFL, predominately with the Minnesota Vikings, who he was selected by in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft. He also spent time with the New York Jets, New Orleans Saints, Carolina Panthers, Denver Broncos and the Miami Dolphins. In 2023, he announced his plans to retire, which he officially did in early 2024. He went on to pursue coaching football at his former high school in Miami, where he led the team to a Class 3A state championship last season. Bridgewater came out of retirement in December to join the Detroit Lions in their playoff pursuit. He is 33-32 as a starter and has totaled 15,120 yards, 75 touchdowns, 47 interceptions and has a 90.5 passer rating. Last month, Bridgewater was suspended from coaching his former high school team for providing players with financial benefits. He questioned the suspension, adding in a Facebook post that he "self reported." He also said in the post, "I'm not going anywhere."

Mystics trade all-star Brittney Sykes to Seattle, add a first-round pick

CHICAGO — The Washington Mystics traded all-star guard Brittney Sykes to the Seattle Storm for a 2026 first-round pick, veteran forward Alysha Clark and guard Zia Cooke on Tuesday. The team then waived Cooke and forward Sika Koné. The move gives the Mystics three first-round picks in 2026 as the team continues to lean into its draft-and-develop strategy despite being in playoff contention. Ahead of Tuesday night's game against the Chicago Sky, Washington (13-15) is ninth in the standings, a game behind the Golden State Valkyries for the final playoff spot.

Ravens CB Nate Wiggins removed from joint practice with Colts after fight breaks out

Baltimore Ravens cornerback Nate Wiggins was removed from the joint practice with the Indianapolis Colts on Tuesday after a fight broke out between the two teams. Reporters in attendance watched as Ravens cornerback Keyon Martin looked to deliver a late push to Colts running back Tyler Goodson during a punt drill. Wiggins came off the sideline and threw several punches as both sidelines cleared. Advertisement Wiggins was a first-round pick of the Ravens in 2024. He played in all but two games during a strong rookie campaign, where he broke up 13 passes and held quarterbacks to a 66.7 passer rating when they targeted him. He enters the 2025 season as a likely starting outside corner and one of Baltimore's core defenders. The Ravens host the Colts for a preseason game at M&T Bank Stadium on Thursday at 7 p.m. ET. This story will be updated.
