SINGAPORE - After a month of uncertainty and speculation, the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) confirmed on May 22 that Brunei DPMM will not participate in the Singapore Premier League (SPL) after the 2024-25 season.
The decision comes after discussions between the FAS and DPMM, with the Brunei-based club indicating that intent to compete in other leagues.
FAS general secretary Chew Chun-Liang. said in a statement: 'DPMM has been a respected member of the SPL and a valued partner in the development of regional football. Their staff and players have consistently displayed an exemplary sporting spirit, and the club's impact on Singapore football will be long remembered. We wish them the very best in their future endeavours.
'While we are sad to see them go, we understand the club's position and we part ways with our full support and appreciation.
'The SPL remains committed to growing the game in Singapore and supporting our participating clubs. Our league continues to be a key platform for nurturing local talent, fostering competitive play, and engaging our local football community. Fans can continue to expect exciting SPL matches and opportunities to support their teams in the coming seasons.'
On April 21, The Straits Times reported that DPMM's participation in next season's SPL was in doubt as the club had expressed their interest to return to the Malaysia Super League (MSL) and were eyeing Geylang International striker Tomoyuki Doi.
DPMM coach Jamie McAllister said then that the move was 'not confirmed yet', but the club said in a post on their website that talks for a return to the Malaysian competition were looking 'positive'.
DPMM had taken part in the second-tier Malaysia Premier League in 2005-06 and gained promotion to the top-tier MSL, where they finished third and 10th in the following seasons.
They joined the SPL when it was known as the S.League in 2009 and won the League Cup.
However, they were removed from the league after Fifa imposed a global ban on the Football Association of Brunei Darussalam following government interference in its affairs. They rejoined the S.League in 2012, winning it in 2015 and 2019.
They did not defend their title in 2020 owing to the Covid-19 pandemic and travel restrictions in their country. After sitting out the 2021 and 2022 seasons, they returned for the 2023 campaign, finishing seventh in the nine-team competition.
Currently sixth in the SPL standings, DPMM will play their final league match against Hougang United on May 24. Three days later, they will meet Lion City Sailors in the second leg of the Singapore Cup semi-final, after losing 3-2 in the first leg on May 21.
DPMM general manager Mohamad Ali Haji Momin said in a statement: 'Over the years, we have been privileged to be part of a league that upholds the highest standards of professionalism, competition, and sportsmanship. More than just football, our time in the SPL has given us the invaluable gift of camaraderie, shared experiences, and lasting friendships.
'The warmth, hospitality, and unwavering support extended to us by FAS and the Singapore football community have made our participation deeply meaningful, and for this, we are truly grateful.'
With DPMM's exit, the SPL will be left with only eight teams.
But ST previously reported that there could be a replacement for the 2025-26 season, with the possible inclusion of Tengah FC.

Hunt for new Lions head coach down to 5 names, including ex-Tottenham Hotspur assistant coach

SINGAPORE: The hunt for a new national football head coach has intensified, with the shortlist down from 10 names a week ago to five now, CNA understands. A few candidates – including former Tottenham Hotspur assistant coach Nick Montgomery – are in Singapore for interviews to snag the top job, after Japanese tactician Tsutomu Ogura resigned on Jun 24 due to personal reasons. His exit left Singapore looking for its fourth national coach in six years. Assistant coach Gavin Lee has stepped in to lead the Lions as caretaker in the meantime. While the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) has kept its final candidates under wraps, Montgomery and a mystery Spaniard are among those who have been spotted in town for talks. Montgomery left the English Premier League side in June after a year there, where he won the Europa League. He was previously head coach of Scottish Premiership club Hibernian and Australian A-League side Central Coast Mariners. The 43-year-old spent most of his playing career at Sheffield United. NO MAJOR TROPHIES SINCE 2012 The incoming coach will face high expectations from the new FAS Council, led by billionaire Forrest Li who was elected president in April. Li, who founded tech giant Sea, also owns Singapore Premier League (SPL) club Lion City Sailors. He told reporters last week he hopes that with success on the field, more people will follow local football and that interest will grow. Singapore are currently 159th in the world rankings. "We have the best city planning, the best airport, best highways. A lot of things are world-class – why not football?" Li said. Ogura left Singapore at the top of their third-round Asian Cup qualifying group, with four points after their first two matches and four games left. Finishing top means qualifying for Asia's premier competition for the first time ever on merit. The Lions have not secured a major trophy in more than a decade since winning Southeast Asia's football championship, the AFF Championship, in 2012. Observers said a new coach needs to be hired soon in order to build relationships with the players and understand the local football environment. Football pundit and commentator Rhysh Roshan Rai said Ogura had 'brought a lot more belief' into the Lions, who now have clearer ideas about the team. 'They want to try and dominate teams … They want to go out and play, and they want to show that they have courage on the ball, so I think all these things are really encouraging and you would like to see this continue,' added the former Singapore Armed Forces FC midfielder. 'I don't think it'll be a good idea to get someone who's going to basically rip up all the tactics and come in with his own ideas, own approach. Because at the international level, you don't have much time to work with these players.' Rai noted that the new coach will also have to consider if Lions are getting enough playing minutes in the SPL, which recently raised the number of foreign players to seven per match. 'We're seeing SPL clubs, for example, signing foreign goalkeepers, and so that's going to be a key area as well. We already don't have a great goalkeeping situation in Singapore,' he added. Ogura had left his role with some advice for Singapore football. 'Singapore must look for its own way, not chase another country, or chase another way of how to do things,' he said. 'Always keep confidence. Keep trust to our players, then our staff, then I think for Singapore a new history is coming.'

Wrexham 'off and running' after beating Hull on penalties in League Cup clash

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox Wrexham's win on penalties over Hull City in Tuesday's League Cup first-round meeting has helped them kickstart their campaign after a disappointing loss to Southampton in the Championship, the Welsh club's manager Phil Parkinson said. Jack Marriott scored the winning penalty as Wrexham beat Hull 5-3 on penalties, after substitute Ollie Palmer scored twice in added time to force a penalty shootout following a 3-3 draw. Wrexham, co-owned by Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds and fellow Hollywood A-lister American Rob McElhenney, were defeated in their first English second-tier game for 43 years on Saturday as Southampton scored two late goals to snatch a 2-1 win. "I said to the lads, you know, we're not coming into this division just to set up and to stop teams, we can play," Parkinson said in an interview with club media. "But one thing's for sure, the spirit, what we're all about was there for all to see, which is really important for the new lads who have joined us to see that we go right to the end. We had a huge disappointment on Saturday. "And we've got our season off and running with a result tonight. Tonight, it was good to get a result and get through to the next round and show everybody what we're all about." Parkinson added that the home win over Hull had helped Wrexham acclimatise to their revamped Racecourse Ground stadium, ahead of their meeting with West Bromwich Albion on Saturday. PSG coach Luis Enrique wants ‘different profile' to Gianluigi Donnarumma

UDINE – Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique on Aug 12 defended his decision to freeze out Gianluigi Donnarumma ahead of the new season, insisting he needed a goalkeeper with a 'different' profile. Donnarumma appears set to move after PSG signed Lucas Chevalier from Lille, before Enrique left the Italian out of his squad for the Uefa Super Cup against Tottenham Hotspur on Aug 13. 'These are always difficult decisions to make. I can only speak highly of Donnarumma,' the Spaniard told a press conference in Udine. 'He is one of the best players in his position, without any doubt. He is even better as a person, but we were looking for a different profile of goalkeeper. It's my decision, and the club supports me. 'Bearing in mind the level of Gianluigi Donnarumma and everything he has given to the club, of course we understand the situation but my aim is to improve the team and I have tried to do that in the best way possible. We now need to find the best solution for all parties.' Donnarumma played a starring role in the latter stages of last season's Champions League as PSG secured the trophy for the first time with a 5-0 final thrashing of Inter Milan. The Italian – reportedly a target of Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea – said he was 'disappointed' by his omission. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. 'Unfortunately, someone has decided that I can no longer be part of the group or contribute to the team's success. I am disappointed and disheartened.' Donnarumma has made 161 appearances for PSG since signing from AC Milan in 2021. He has won seven major trophies with the European champions, while he also played a big role in Italy's Euro 2020 triumph. 'I hope to have the opportunity to look the fans at the Parc des Princes in the eyes one more time and say goodbye as it should be done,' he added. 'If that doesn't happen, I want you to know that your support and affection mean the world to me.' PSG captain Marquinhos, who has been with the club since 2013, admitted it was hard to see Donnarumma pushed towards the exit door. 'It's always difficult,' the Brazilian told reporters. 'In the 12 or 13 years I've been here, I've seen the same thing happen to other important players, who were forced to choose another club at the end of the transfer window and leave. 'Our life is like that, football is like that. As players, all we can do is give our all until the last minute while we're here. If he has to leave we will thank him. Enrique's men also start their Ligue 1 title defence this weekend with a trip to Nantes on Aug 17. AFP, REUTERS
