Months-old footage shows flooding in Florida, not Thailand after heavy rain
"Flooding around (Victory Monument) in Thailand at 3:15pm today. Myanmar citizens beware," reads the Burmese-language caption of a Facebook video shared on May 27, 2025. Superimposed Burmese-language text on the video -- which shows partially submerged houses and buildings in an area inundated with water -- reads, "Flooding in Thailand. Those who are close to the sea, please be careful". The video circulated online days after Thai media reported that a combination of heavy rain and slow water drainage had flooded parts of Bangkok (archived here and here). The footage was also shared in similar Burmese posts on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok. But the clip is old and was not filmed in Bangkok. A reverse image search on Google using keyframes from the falsely shared video led to an identical clip published on Instagram on October 9, 2024 (archived link). Its caption reads: "Fort Myers Beach, halfway down Estero island @ 5:30pm on Oct 9. Milton was about double the flooding from Helene for FMB." Category 3 storm Hurricane Milton made landfall on Florida's Gulf Coast on October 9, 2024, pounding communities still reeling from the effects of Hurricane Helene two weeks earlier. At least 16 people died as Milton sent tornadoes spinning across Florida and left millions of buildings without power (archived link). The video matches Google Street View imagery of Fort Myers Beach (archived link). AFP has previously debunked other misinformation related to flooding in Thailand here.

New 'Final Destination' film sparks misrepresented visuals
"Anyone knows this news? The ceiling of a movie theatre in the Philippines collapsed during the screening of the Final Destination 6 movie. That's really the ultimate experience," says an Indonesian-language Facebook post on May 26, 2025. It includes a two-minute clip of a crowd in distress as water starts to leak from a cinema's ceiling, with some parts starting to fall off. A similar post written in Burmese surfaced on the same day with an image showing the damaged interior of a movie house. "The ceiling collapsed while screening Final Destination," the caption reads. "Final Destination: Bloodlines", the latest instalment in the horror franchise, topped the North American box office following its release in mid-May (archived link). Similar claims about a theatre collapsing during the film's screening also surfaced on X, Instagram and TikTok and were shared in other languages, including Hindi, English, and Tagalog. While such an incident was reported in Argentina's capital Buenos Aires in May, the circulating visuals are unrelated (archived link). A reverse image search using keyframes found multiple news reports shared the clip in June 2015, including from ABC7 News (archived link). "Six people were reported hurt Monday night in Cebu, Philippines when parts of the ceiling of an Ayala Center Cebu cinema room collapsed after intense water leakage," part of the report reads, referring to a city in central Philippines. It goes to say that 350 people were in the room for a brand relaunch event. A similar clip of the event taken from another angle has appeared in reports from Philippine media organisations Sunstar and Rappler (archived here and here). Another reverse search of the photo showing the destroyed theatre found it in an NBC News article published February 28, 2025 -- months before the release of "Final Destination: Bloodlines" (archived link). "Movie theater ceiling collapses during screening of 'Captain America: Brave New World'," reads the report's headline. "The historic Liberty Theater in Wenatchee, Wash. Two people were in the theater during the incident, but no injuries were reported," says the caption to the picture. The photo is credited to Wenatchee Valley Fire Department, which uploaded an Instagram post about the same event on February 26, 2025 (archived here and here). "At approximately 8 PM, Wenatchee Valley firefighters responded to a reported ceiling collapse at Liberty Cinema. Two people were inside the theater at the time, but fortunately, no injuries were reported. The cause of the collapse remains under investigation," the post states. 24-year-old city council member wins SC House race
The view of the state House chamber from the gallery on Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2024. (File/Travis Bell/STATEHOUSE CAROLINA/Specia to the SC Daily Gazette) A 24-year-old Bishopville City Council member will be the newest legislator at the Statehouse. Democrat Keishan Scott cruised to victory Tuesday over former Sumter County GOP chair Bill Oden. Scott received almost 71% of less than 3,700 votes cast in a special election for a state House seat representing all of Lee County and parts of Kershaw and Sumter counties, according to unofficial results from the state Election Commission. 'This victory is not mine alone, but it belongs to all of the people … that got out and exercised their right to vote,' Scott said to cheers at a victory speech broadcast on his Facebook speech. Scott is the youngest person to be elected to the Statehouse since Rep. Brandon Newton, a Lancaster Republican, won as a 22-year-old in 2016. But the youngest person in at least modern times to be elected to the Legislature is former Sen. Sherry Shealy Martschink. The Mount Pleasant Republican was elected to the House in 1970 during her junior year at the University of South Carolina, only 14 days after her 21st birthday. Scott, who won his first election to city council in 2023, will take over the seat vacated by Rep. Will Wheeler, a Bishopville Democrat who announced his resignation in January, just three days into this year's legislative session. His surprising resignation left the rural district without a representative for the entirety of this year's session. 'I can promise you that every day I go into the Statehouse, I will carry the people with me,' Scott, a preacher, said to the crowd moments before leading a prayer. 'Because certainly, it's about people more than politics.' The election means nothing changes with the Republicans' supermajority advantage in the House. But it does restore the number of Democrats in the 124-member chamber to 36. Wheeler ran unopposed in four of his five elections. The only time he faced GOP opposition was in 2022, when Republicans gained supermajority status in the chamber. The 2024 elections gave Republicans a supermajority in the Senate too. Oden, who recently concluded four years as head of the Sumter County Republican Party, said in a text to the Daily Gazette he 'lost tonight' but 'had a ball running.' 'God has something better in store for me,' he added. Scott's victory ensured the Democratic Party didn't lose another seat in the Statehouse. In an endorsement video posted on Scott's Facebook, U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn emphasized Tuesday's election was a must win for Democrats. Electing Scott 'will be the beginning of a Democratic comeback here in South Carolina.' Clyburn said. 'Irrespective of where you live, how old you may be, whatever gender you may be, this is about the future of Democrats in South Carolina.' Lee County had issues with counting votes in November's election and recount for a state Senate race that ousted Hartsville Democrat Gerald Malloy, who ultimately conceded ahead of his scheduled challenge. The state Election Commission sent staff to Lee County to help during the primary, as well as Tuesday's special election, commission spokesperson John Catalano told the SC Daily Gazette. In April's primary, Scott defeated Carl Whetsel, a retired chiropractor and Bishopville City Council member, by 11 votes after a recount. In the unofficial count done days before, Scott only won by 10 votes. An automatic recount was required under state law since the winning margin was less than 1%. With Tuesday's landslide victory, he can officially focus on making a difference in Columbia next year. 'Your vote of confidence,' he said to the crowd, 'it means the world to me.'
