When is Juneteenth 2025? Is there mail? Are banks closed? All about the federal holiday

It's known as America's Second Independence Day, and it's coming soon. Juneteenth celebrates the end of slavery in the United States. It's the longest-running African American holiday, and it became a federal holiday a few years ago. Here's what to know about the holiday. Yes, Juneteenth is a federal holiday in 2025, according to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. It is one of 11 federal holidays observed every year. The others are: New Year's Day Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Washington's Birthday/Presidents Day Memorial Day July 4 Labor Day Columbus Day Veterans Day Thanksgiving Christmas Day Juneteenth will be marked on Thursday, June 19, 2025. Unlike other federal holidays, such as Memorial Day, Labor Day and Thanksgiving, which are observed on a specific day of the week, Juneteenth is celebrated on the actual day. Juneteenth commemorates the day — June 19, 1865 — when federal soldiers arrived in Galveston to take control of Texas and ensure the slaves were freed per the Emancipation Proclamation, according to the History Channel. Juneteenth — short for June nineteenth — marks the end of slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday. Juneteenth is a portmanteau of June 19, the day Union troops arrived in Galveston. It became known as "Juneteenth" by the newly freed slaves of Texas, according to the National Museum of African American History & Culture at the Smithsonian. President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863. But its effect was limited, according to the National Archives. It only applied to states that seceded during the Civil War, leaving slavery intact for slave states that stayed with the Union. It also could not be enforced until Confederate states were under Union control, according to the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Therefore, it took until June 19, 1865, for slaves in Texas to be freed. Slavery in America was formally abolished with the 13th Amendment, which was ratified Dec. 6, 1865. Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021. President Joe Biden signed legislation on June 17, 2021, according to USA TODAY, after Congress passed The Juneteenth National Independence Day Act that same month. Juneteenth began rising to prominence in 2020 after the murder of George Floyd, a Black man, sparked protests across the country against police brutality, USA TODAY reports. Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., first introduced the Juneteenth bill in 2020 following the killings of Floyd and Breonna Taylor of Louisville, Kentucky. His initial attempt to pass the bill was unsuccessful. No. As a federal holiday, the U.S. Postal Service is closed that day, and there will be no mail delivered. FedEx pickup and delivery services will be available on June 19, according to the company's website. FedEx Office locations will also be open, USA TODAY reports. Juneteenth is a Federal Reserve bank holiday, meaning the organization that regulates the nation's banking system is closed, according to Banks aren't required to close for Federal Reserve holidays, but they often do. Transactions made during these holidays won't be posted until the next business day. Branches of Capital One, Bank of America, PNC, Truist, CitiBank and JPMorgan Chase will be closed on Juneteenth, USA TODAY is reporting. Capital One Cafes will remain open. The New York Stock Exchange is closed on federal holidays and will be closed on Juneteenth, according to its website. Trash pickup may be delayed because of Juneteenth, depending on the hauler. Behind the veteran designating Winnebago County's Highway 21 as Purple Heart Memorial Highway

OSHKOSH, Wis. (WFRV) – Winnebago County Marine veteran Roy Rogers' time in the military came to an end with a 15-month hospital stay at the Great Lakes Naval Hospital in Waukegan, IL. Before arriving there, a landmine detonated in front of him in Chu Lai, South Vietnam, blowing apart a piece of his left hand and foot, littering that side of his body with shrapnel. 'It hit my rifle and disintegrated my rifle and part of me,' Rogers said. 'I was lucky.' After requiring nine operations during that hospital stay, no one would have blamed him for wanting to forget those days, leaving them behind to never be thought of again. He has not. In fact, Rogers has spent nearly six decades working for and with veterans in Winnebago County and throughout the state. 'I may have stepped on a landmine, but I'm still here and I'm still fighting for everything,' he said. Still fighting for fellow veterans, Rogers has spent the better part of the past year working to make Highway 21 in Winnebago County a Purple Heart Memorial Highway. 'I worked for about 10 months asking the Winnebago County executive and our state governor if they'd approve making that a state highway designation, and it came to pass and I'm so happy,' Rogers said. While the county board and state review and approve of the motion to make the designation, it takes citizen action to organize it, and at least one veteran from the county to lose life or limb for it. 'There was probably 60 people in Winnebago County that were probably killed in Vietnam,' Rogers said. The effort that Rogers spent on getting the designation is not lost on Winnebago County executive Gordon Hintz, who spoke at the ceremony Saturday along with Rogers at the intersection of Highway 21 and Oakwood Rd. 'It's important to recognize that we have people who have served, given life and limb, from Winnebago County,' Hintz said. 'But it really took a citizen, a veteran himself, Roy Rogers, to push this forward, and the county was really happy to build off his work and make today happen.' 'I'm thrilled that what I started actually came to pass,' Rogers said. He is hopeful that people driving on Highway 21 remember not the effort it took to get the designation passed, but rather the sacrifices women and men in the military made and continue to make. 'Hopefully everyone that drives on Highway 21 in Winnebago County realizes that a person had to be combat wounded in order to put that sign there,' he said. Wisconsin has allowed highways to be designated as Purple Heart Memorial Highways since 1994. The Purple Heart was first instituted in 1782, by then-General George Washington. Mountaineer Boys State marks 86 years of civic leadership at Jackson's Mill

WESTON, (WBOY) — The 86th session of the American Legion Mountaineer Boys State is being held this week at WVU Jackson's Mill, continuing a tradition of leadership and civic education for West Virginia's youth. A few hundred high school students from across the Mountain State are taking part in the week-long program, which immerses them in hands-on learning about government operations and the responsibilities of citizenship. Participants, referred to as 'citizens,' actively engage in the formation and operation of mock city, county and state governments. 'We started here in 1936, West Virginia has the second oldest Boys State in the nation. Illinois started it in 1935, we thought it was a good idea, went out and talked to them and we got the second charter back then,' the Director for American Legion Mountaineer Boys State Robbie Robinson said. 'We're able to claim that we're the only camp or only Boys State program in the United States that has it at the same place since its inception.' Morgantown Pop Shop holds first of summer concerts Throughout the week, students take part in legislative sessions, court proceedings, and law enforcement demonstrations. They also attend assemblies, join recreational programs, and explore career opportunities in various fields. Guest speakers often including government officials, veterans, and community leaders share insights on leadership and service. 'Sometimes civics isn't touched on a whole lot in school anymore. So here they get a different perspective on it, a real worlds perspective on it, and they get a chance to actually do it,' Robinson added. 'These boys will get experiences that they won't receive in other places, however this is something that will stick with them for the rest of their life.' Organizers added the experience they receive while at the camp leaves a lasting impact, helping to shape what could be future leaders while fostering a deeper understanding of the rights and responsibilities of American citizenship.
