
Shostakovich: Preludes & Fugues Op 87 album review – Avdeeva brings a light touch in an accomplished performance
Comparing Nikolayeva's performances with those by Yulianna Avdeeva on her new set is fascinating. Avdeeva, who won the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw in 2010, takes a lighter approach, less forthright, and perhaps not digging as deeply into the barely disguised tragedy of the E minor Prelude as Nikolayeva does, but equally dazzling in the exuberant display of the A minor. She finds exactly the right mood of delicate insouciance for the F sharp minor prelude, too, and for the mysterious halting fugue that follows.
Avdeeva follows her performance of the set with a recording of a prelude in C sharp minor that Shostakovich originally drafted for his Op 87 set, but discarded unfinished; the Polish composer Krzysztof Meyer completed the draft and added a fugue of his own. She gave the world premiere of the complete work in 2020, and it makes a neat envoi to a very accomplished performance.

Someone Like Me review – moving through the unspeakable toll of war in Ukraine
In Pokémon lore, the distortion world is an evil parallel universe. For playwright Lyuba Ilnytska, it feels like an analogy for her native Ukraine under Russia's unprovoked assault. Much as she would like a giant Pokémon bird to stand over Kharkiv, allowing its residents a peaceful night's sleep, the reality is something more bleak. There is no escape from the terror. Working with choreographer Anatolii Sachivko from the city's Nafta theatre, performer and director Nina Khyzhna makes this theme concrete. As she presents it, the toll of life during wartime is not only psychological but also physical. Whether it is the bombardment of rockets and drones or the adjustment to prosthetics, air raid warnings and emergency Telegram groups, the impact hits the body. 'Movement is a must for a human being' is a phrase repeated in a dance-theatre performance that articulates the unspeakable experience of living in sleepless fear. She dances, sometimes with small neurotic movements, a woman under pressure, other times with muscular fury, a victim fighting back, taking us through a theatrical poem that evokes the everyday oppression of war. Based on interviews with residents, old and young, Someone Like Me is a collage of voices, unrelated to each other but unified in the face of terror and speaking as one. A child on tiptoes plays a game of civilians and snipers; an old-timer recalls the great famine of the 1930s and previous military conflicts; a woman tries to reassure her mother they will be safe when she can scarcely persuade herself. Nik Akorn's score clicks, rattles and unsettles, while Khyzhna moves with precision, mapping the streets of her beloved Kharkiv and embodying the trauma of her compatriots. The New Total War by Bob Seely: Putin's most dangerous weapon? Mind control
The New Total War by Bob Seely (Biteback £25, 432pp) I hadn't thought I would be able to kill people… Obviously, I can.' The words are those of a Ukrainian woman, a former drone pilot who is one of the interviewees in Bob Seely's The New Total War. Seely, who has been a soldier, a foreign correspondent and an MP, has written a book that is a remarkable blend of first-hand accounts from the frontline in the war in Ukraine and a guide to the various methods by which Putin is pursuing larger conflict with the West. He talks to Ukrainians whose lives have been irrevocably changed by the war. Panoushka is a Latin teacher turned sniper. She risks her life, driven by the need to be a 'warrior' after the death of her fiancé. Rozmaryn worked as a chef in Poland but returned to Ukraine to fight after the Russian invasion. One of the characteristics of the war is 'the explosive rise in the use of cheap, mass-produced drones to reconnoitre, target and kill'. Seely visits the Dragon Sky Drone School, where one of the teachers is the former lead guitarist in a well-known Ukrainian indie band. He speaks with several teenagers who have been on the receiving end of Russia 's inhumane policy of kidnapping and indoctrinating children. 'They wrapped me up like a candy bar and sent me to Russia,' says Ksenia, who escaped and rescued her younger brother. On three occasions, 16-year-old Rostyslav was put into solitary confinement after he refused to sing the Russian national anthem. Seely also interviews Zayats, a Russian POW who has revelatory tales of the brutality of life in Putin's army. Seely wants to open the eyes of his readers to 'Russia's new form of total warfare' in which the meanings of 'war' and 'peace' are blurred. Throughout Russian history there has been conflict between Westernisers, those who wish to imitate the West, and Slavophiles, those who despise Western culture and values. Today, the latter are in the ascendancy. They see old-style military violence as only one element in an ongoing conflict with the West. Information warfare, what one Ukrainian described as 'messing with people's minds so they don't know what's true or not', is just as important. Seely argues that what happens in Ukraine is important for all of us. If we fail to grasp the new nature of conflict, 'the next few decades will witness the twilight of democracies'. His book is a call for an understanding of new realities. 'We overestimated Russia in 2022,' he writes. 'We underestimate it now.'
