Motor racing-F1 leader Piastri will not seek preferential treatment

SPIELBERG, Austria (Reuters) -Formula One leader Oscar Piastri said he would not seek preferential treatment in the title battle with McLaren teammate Lando Norris and the pair will continue to race freely after a collision in Canada two weeks ago.
The Australian is 22 points clear of Norris after winning five of the 10 races so far, with 14 remaining including Sunday's Austrian Grand Prix.
Norris failed to score in Montreal after running into the back of Piastri's car while trying to pass for fourth place late in the race.
Piastri said he and Norris, who accepted blame, had cleared the air already after the race and there were no changes to the rules of engagement.
"We're still free to race, still fighting for a championship each. So, no, keep going racing and make sure that we don't come into contact again," he said on Thursday of the outcome of talks after Canada.
Asked about his "healthy" lead and whether he might seek preferential treatment, Piastri questioned the reporter's take on the situation.
"Your version of healthy is much bigger than mine," he said. "I just want, and we all want, a fair opportunity trying to win both championships. Especially in the Drivers' Championship because ultimately it can only be one of us.
"I think the situation has to change dramatically to start having those conversations, and they're a very long way away at the moment.
"So at the moment, all I can ask for is a fair chance to try and win the championship, and that's what I want as well. No, I'm not willing to enter those talks at all."
McLaren have won seven of the 10 races, with Red Bull's Max Verstappen taking two and Mercedes George Russell triumphant in Canada.
Despite McLaren's success, and 175-point lead over Mercedes in the constructors' standings, Piastri is only 43 clear of Verstappen in third place.
Canada was the first race this season without a McLaren driver on the front row or podium but Piastri sounded confident that they would be stronger in Austria.
"I think we kind of understand what went wrong in Canada. So, we'll try and have a better weekend here, but I'm confident we'll be back on top form," he said.

Afshar was part of the CEO's office and since last year had overseen sales and manufacturing in Europe and North America. After joining Tesla in 2017, he quickly became one of Musk's trusted lieutenants, playing a central role in major projects like the Texas Gigafactory. The sources, who declined to be identified, had no details on the circumstances of his exit or the reason behind it. Afshar posted about Tesla on X early this week, and his profiles on X and LinkedIn still showed his Tesla role as current on Wednesday. Afshar departed amid slumping demand in Europe and North America for Tesla's aging vehicle line-up while rivals have offered more affordable alternatives. Two people familiar with Tesla's operations said Afshar was among the executives who took on bigger roles this year when Musk was focused on Washington. Musk led President Donald Trump's government cost-cutting drive this year, and many investors and analysts worried that distracted Musk from Tesla and alienated some potential buyers. Former mid-level Tesla sales manager Matthew LaBrot, who was recently fired for public criticism of Musk, said Afshar was a "supporting character" closely tied to Musk until he rose to head sales and manufacturing in North America and Europe. LaBrot said there was significant pressure internally to deal with the sales declines, which have been particularly severe in Europe. Afshar's departure was reported earlier by Bloomberg News, which also reported that North America HR Director Jenna Ferrua had exited the company. Musk ended his Washington stint in late May, reassuring some investors concerned about brand damage. But Tesla's shares remain down about 19% for the year, after an initial rise on optimism that Trump's victory would clear the regulatory path for robotaxis. On Sunday, Tesla deployed self-driving taxis in Austin, Texas. ‘Still on a high': ‘F1: The Movie' is here — and Brad Pitt's loving the 197mph rush
LONDON, June 27 — Brad Pitt relished an 'extraordinary' experience of driving a Formula 1 car as F1: The Movie hit cinemas in Britain and other countries, German Press Agency (dpa) reported. The Hollywood star, who plays F1 driver Sonny Hayes in the blockbuster film, was recently given the chance to drive McLaren's 2023 car around Austin's Circuit of the Americas. Pitt, 61, had plenty of driving experience — including behind the wheel of modified F2 cars — while filming the movie over the last two years, but was blown away by his first taste of an F1 car. 'Oh my God, what a rush,' Pitt said in a video on McLaren's social media channels. 'A lot bigger horse than I've been on.' Pitt added on the Beyond the Grid podcast: 'I got to hit 197mph this week. I really wanted to hit 200. You know, it hurts me a little bit — three miles per hour short on the straight. This was at Austin. 'I've just never experienced anything that's just, more feeling of presence in my life. You're so focused, but you're not white-knuckling. You're just in this sublime groove. It is really extraordinary. 'I try to explain this feeling of downforce, and I fail every time because you try to say like a rollercoaster, but that's not even right, because you feel the fulcrum point underneath you — you're in it. 'I was in an aerobatic plane once, and it's the closest thing, but still this thing. This is such a unique feeling and an absolute high. I'm still on a high, I really am. I'm just still on a high.' Pitt's fictional rookie team-mate Joshua Pearce is played by British actor Damson Idris. Filming took place across multiple races over the last two seasons, and F1 chiefs hope the movie will follow the popularity of Netflix's Drive To Survive series in cracking America. Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton is an executive producer on the movie directed by Joseph Kosinski and co-produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. F1: The Movie will be released in the United States on Friday. Hamilton, 40, posted a picture of himself alongside Pitt as he reflected on the journey he had been on while making the film. 'Four years in the making — what a journey it's been,' Hamilton wrote on Instagram.
