DC United names Swiss coach René Weiler to replace Lesesne
WASHINGTON (AP) — D.C. United has picked René Weiler to be its new coach.
The team announced Wednesday that Weiler will take over once he receives a U.S. work permit. The 51-year-old Weiler, a native of Switzerland, served recently as coach and sporting director at Servette FC in the Swiss Super League. He's also won the Belgian Pro League title and reached the Europa League quarterfinals with Anderlecht and guided Al Ahly to a Premier League championship in Egypt.
"D.C. United is a club with a proud history and a passionate fanbase,' Weiler said. 'The foundation on site gives me confidence in what we can build. There's still a lot of work ahead, but I'm fully committed to leading this club back to where it belongs, competing at the highest level in MLS.'
Kevin Flanagan will remain interim coach until Weiler arrives. D.C. United fired coach Troy Lesesne last week. United was 4-11-7 entering Wednesday night's match against Charlotte.

CHATEL, France (AP) — French rider Pauline Ferrand-Prévôt won the women's Tour de France at her first attempt on Sunday, launching an attack to clinch the final stage and increase her overnight lead. It gave Ferrand-Prévôt a resounding victory. Sunday's ninth stage from Praz-sur-Arly to Châtel was a 124-kilometer (77-mile) trek featuring three big mountain climbs. But Ferrand-Prévôt did not face any big attacks and instead launched one of her own with 6 kilometers left. The crowds cheered her all the way to the finish line and, moments later, the tears flowed as she lay on her back, exhausted but elated. Vollering was 20 seconds behind in second place and Niewiadoma followed in third place as they sprinted to the line. Earlier, Ferrand-Prévôt was with Gigante and a few others when they tackled the mammoth climb up Col de Joux Plane — an 11.6-kilometer grind with a gradient of 8.5%. Gigante is known to have trouble descending at speed and was dropped on the long downhill. She could not make the time up, especially with no teammates to help her, and lost her podium spot, finishing sixth overall. Having won Olympic gold in mountain biking and conquered the cobblestones of the Paris-Roubaix classic, Ferrand-Prévôt added another line to her glittering resumé with a Tour victory.

PORTHCAWL, Wales (AP) — Miyu Yamashita of Japan captured her first major title Sunday when she withstood a charge by Charley Hull by not making a bogey until the outcome of the Women's British Open was no longer in doubt. She closed with a 2-under 70 for a two-shot victory. Yamashita holed two big par putts on the back nine at Royal Porthcawl, the last one when Hull had closed to within one shot of the lead. Hull started the final round three shots behind. She holed a 20-foot birdie putt on the 14th to get within one shot. But the English star hit into a pot bunker off the tee at the 16th and did well to make bogey. She made another bogey on the 17th and had to settle for a 69 to tie for second with Minami Katsu of Japan. ___
