PETALING JAYA: Focus Point Holdings Bhd celebrated the grand opening of its 200th optical store, a significant milestone that reflects over three decades of continuous growth, innovation and commitment to eye health for all Malaysians.
The ceremony was officiated by Focus Point Holdings Bhd chairman and Health Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Suriani Ahmad.
The momentous milestone comes just ahead of Focus Point's 36th anniversary, underscoring the brand's enduring legacy and its forward-looking vision to transform the vision care landscape across the country.
'Reaching 200 outlets is more than a number. It's a testament to the dedication, resilience and trust that we've built with the communities we serve,' said Focus Point president and chief executive officer Datuk Liaw Choon Liang.
'This milestone reaffirms our mission to make professional eye care more accessible, more advanced and more impactful - especially as we continue to educate the public on the importance of regular eye screenings and address rising issues like myopia.'
From a single store in Muar in 1989 to becoming the largest optical retail chain in Malaysia, Focus Point has grown into a trusted household name for vision care, innovation and service excellence.
The expansion to 200 outlets across urban and suburban areas demonstrates the brand's commitment to nationwide eye health accessibility, job creation and support for local entrepreneurship through its franchise model.
The celebration also highlighted the group's ongoing investment in vision care and eye health awareness, particularly in myopia management for children, a growing concern globally due to increasing digital device usage and lifestyle changes.
'Preventable blindness and uncorrected vision issues remain a major public health challenge,' said Suriani.
'Focus Point actively working to bridge the gap especially through outreach programmes, AI-advanced screenings and professional optometry support perfectly aligns with the ministry's goals in promoting early detection and equitable access to vision care.'
In conjunction with this 200th outlet celebration, Focus Point has partnered with Great Heart Charity Association, an NGO dedicated to serving underprivileged communities.
As part of the initiative, Focus Point is sponsoring 200 pairs of prescription eyewear to individuals in need, underscoring its belief that clear vision is a basic right, not a privilege.
This initiative builds on the work of the Focus Point Caring Hearts Charity Foundation, which has touched thousands of lives through free screenings, community outreach events and educational campaigns across Malaysia since its establishment.

Ahmad Ibrahim: Time for a world-class race track in Sarawak

Ahmad delivering his speech during the event. MIRI (June 14): Senator Dato Ahmad Ibrahim has called for the construction of a proper and permanent race track in Sarawak to cater to the growing number of motorsports enthusiasts within the state and increasing interest from abroad. 'I want to see a permanent Sarawak International Race Circuit built—not only for drift, but also for drag, circuit racing, gymkhana, autocross, karting, and grassroots motorsports,' said Ahmad when officiating the opening of the Borneo Star Drift Series (BSDS) 2025 Round 1 and Round 2 at the Permyjaya Racetrack here last night. He highlighted that such an event has significant potential to generate employment across a wide range of sectors. 'Events like this have great potential in generating numerous jobs involving motorsports engineering, racing crews, event logistics, media production, tyre and lubricant businesses, tuning garages, and even e-motorsport,' said Ahmad, who is also president of the Sarawak Motorsports Association. Commending the young organisers behind the event, he praised the KDC Motorsport Club for their dedication despite limited funding. 'They do not speak much, but walk the talk and work hard. Funds may be limited, but their fighting spirit in making it happen was relentless. Keep going. You have my full backing at the national level. We will continue to push for more support and more funds – not only from the government but also the corporate sector and investors.' Describing the event as extraordinary, Ahmad said it was time to celebrate the rise of Malaysia's and Borneo's drift scene. Ahmad (seated fourth left) with event organisers and participants during a group photo. 'This is not just a race. This is a movement. BSDS2025 is not just a contest of who is the fastest or who produces the most smoke. 'This event is for Malaysians, particularly Sarawakians, to display their talents—in driving, tuning, technical setups, crew work, and most of all, passion. 'Drifting is not just about turning the steering wheel. It's an art, it's adrenaline, it's community.' He noted that the presence of international racers such as Toni Arakaki, Davide Dorigo, and Mervyn Nakamura underscored Sarawak's growing reputation in the global motorsports arena. 'When drifters and racers come to Miri from Japan, Thailand, and the Philippines—that's not just tourism. That is international recognition,' he said. 'That says something about our motorsport potential. And yes, with live streaming and digital coverage, we're not just hosting a local event—we're on the global motorsport map.' He also said that choosing Miri as a host city for the event was both timely and appropriate, given its status as one of Malaysia's top tourist destinations. Earlier in the day, drifters competed in a qualifying session followed by several sub-events including the Top 16 Battle, Top 24 Battle, Top 16 Parade, and Top 16 Tandem. The event continues today with final practice sessions for all drifters, another round of qualifiers, battles, parades, tandems, and the Top 4 Drift Cars Show. Spectators will also have the chance to take photos with the cars. Tomorrow's programme includes final practice, a qualifying session, more battles, the Top 16 Parade, and an autograph session. The event will wrap up with a prize-giving and photography session. Also present at the opening were event organisers Andy Chong and Fish Lee of KDC Motorsport Club, as well as representatives from Sarawak Sports Corporation, Motorsports Association Malaysia, Sarawak Motorsports Association, and Miri City Council. Reaching out to younger donors

EVERY year on June 14, World Blood Donor Day reminds us of the lifesaving act of blood donation. The 2025 campaign slogan, 'Give blood, give hope: together we save lives', emphasises the collective power of communities in transforming lives through donation. With donated blood having a limited shelf life, a constant and stable supply of blood donations is essential. Malaysia currently needs around 2,000 bags of blood daily, yet donors only make up approximately 2.3% of the population. Just 2.2% of Malaysians donate blood annually, well below the 3.5% to 5% seen in many developed countries.

Sabah Space Centre study nears completion, site decision expected by July

Hanafiah (back row, second from left) and Ariffin (back row, middle) with the award recipients. KOTA KINABALU (June 13): The study on the proposed Sabah Space Centre is nearing completion, with the final report expected by the end of July, said Science, Technology and Innovation Sabah Ministry (KSTI) Permanent Secretary, Datuk Mohd Hanafiah Mohd Kassim. 'It was supposed to be completed earlier, but delays occurred due to pending information from several government offices. The new target for completion is by the end of July. It's nearly done,' he told reporters during KSTI's Sabah Excellent Service Awards ceremony at the Magellan Sutera Harbour Resort today, which was graced by KSTI Minister Datuk Ariffin Mohd Arif. Once the study is finalised, planning for the project's implementation phases can begin, including identifying the budget requirements. 'Before we can proceed, the first step would be budgeting. The space industry is highly advanced and demands substantial funding, so foreign investment will be essential. Essentially, they will be the ones carrying out the implementation,' he said. Hanafiah noted, however, that recent tensions between Elon Musk and the President of the United States have posed a setback to Sabah's space ambitions. 'This is relevant because we are targeting investment from Elon Musk's side. Most of the world's major commercial space programmes are based in the United States, followed by Europe. We are also considering China. All this requires firm decisions at the federal level,' he explained. From a global perspective, he added, there is currently congestion in satellite launches due to a shortage of launch platforms. 'There is a bottleneck. Rocket operations are also very costly. That's why we're focusing on developing the ground-based operation site. In the future, God willing, with proper training, Malaysians — particularly Sabahan talents — can move further into the space sector,' he said. He also emphasised that the project has the potential to create job opportunities for the people of Sabah. In addition to Sabah, the states of Pahang and Sarawak are also vying to become Malaysia's launch site. 'There are three states involved, if I'm not mistaken. But everything is still undecided. Each state is likely conducting its own study. Once completed, the findings will be presented to the state governments and subsequently brought to the federal level. Only then will a final site be selected,' he said. Nevertheless, Hanafiah expressed optimism that Sabah has the capability to be chosen as the launch site. Touching on the awards ceremony, he said it is part of the Sabah Government's policy to recognise the contributions of public servants. Three categories were presented: Special Awards under the Permanent Secretary, Special Awards under the Minister, and the Excellence Service Awards.
