Car expert reveals the top five most 'overrated' SUVs of 2025

Daily Mail09-05-2025

A car enthusiast has revealed the top five most 'overrated' SUVs of 2025.
Tomislav Mikula regularly posts motoring insights and maintenance advice for his 377,000 followers on TikTok.
But most recently, he took to the platform to share the list of vehicles that he deems to be 'not good,' adding: 'Arguably most aren't that reliable.'
Before launching into his full evaluation, Tomislav he began with an 'honorable mention' of the Toyota RAV4 which narrowly escaped the list.
The expert, who founded car buying platform Delivrd, began: 'Before you freak out, hear me out for a second because I think the RAV4 is the definition of overrated.
'It is still one of the best SUVs in its class but it only does one thing really well. It is an important thing - which is reliability - but everything else is just middle of the pack.
'It's looks are mid. When it comes down to the driving experience, it's mid. When it comes down to the safety, it's good, but not the best.
'And when it comes down to the overall incentives on this car, they're just fine.'
He continued: 'The competition is starting to creep up on this car, slower and faster and faster, but when it comes down to it, the RAV4 is starting to get outdated.
'With that being said, I still think it's a great buy.
'In 2026, it looks like a redesign year, so this car will be completely revamped.
'But going into 2025, this is my honorable mention.'
5. Buick SUV lineup
Tomislav then officially launched into his most 'overrated' list - starting with the entire Buick SUV lineup.
'I just think Buick has lost their identity. They don't know who they are trying to serve,' the expert said.
'Buick used to be this luxury American brand but they have fallen off because they are trying to appeal to too many crowds.
'Their price point, for example, is more competitive with an economy car than it is a luxury car.
'And the car looks good in theory but when you actually sit in the vehicle, you realize how cheap of materials they used.
'When you are trying to appeal to everybody, you start to lose value. When it comes down to it, a lot of people like the looks of these cars, but the second they sit in them, they realize how cheap they are.
'I think Buicks should go all-in with luxury, or all-in with economy. If they do that, I think they'll be more successful.'
4. Mazda CX-70
Tomislav said the Mazda CX-70 was next on his list because he 'doesn't think it serves a need.'
'I think if they made this car just a little bit more different than the CX-90, it makes sense,' he explained.
'But if you just pop the third row down in the CX-90, you have a CX-70 at a very similar price point.
'And why not have access to the third row if you need it? The CX-70 does not differentiate itself from the CX-90, which is its biggest problem.'
He added: 'I think it's a great SUV, but if I'm in this market, I'm buying a CX-90 even if I don't need the third row - I'll just throw that third row down.'
3. Jeep Wrangler
The car enthusiast went on to tackle the Jeep Wrangler, saying: 'Let's face the facts, it isn't a good SUV.'
He continued: 'Now I understand this vehicle has a cult following, and I understand the owners are single-handedly keeping the rubber ducky market afloat, but when it comes down to it, it's still not a good vehicle.
'It lacks practicality, it lacks safety and it lacks reliability - and those three things are extremely important to add to an SUV.
'Now this vehicle, you understand is bad when the up and coming, exciting feature is that they made power windows and locks standard for the first time in 2025.
'What? Welcome to the 20th century,' he quipped.
Tomsilav continued: 'This car used to have a really good target audience of teenagers that wanted to take the top off and hang out with their friends, but this car's safety rating has become so bad that parents don't want to put their kids in the car.
'They would rather put them in something more reliable and safe and practical than put them into a death trap.'
2. Audi Q5
The car expert said the Audi Q5 is on his list because 'simply, there is not a single thing that Audi does that is better than its competition, which is the Mercedes and the BMW.
'It's not as sporty, it doesn't look as good, it doesn't have as good on technology, and when it comes down to it, it's just not a better value.
'The Audi Q5 has fallen on every single attribute. Now, some people are going to swear by the all wheel drive system and say it's the best thing since sliced bread - but the problem is, if your own redeeming feature can be fixed with another car having good snow tires, your car is flawed.
'Now this car is going to get redesigned and hopefully it's better because some Audis are great in its lineup, but the Q5 is a car that I wouldn't buy, but some people swear by it.'
1. Lexus GX550
Tomislav branded the Lexus GX550 as the 'number one most overrated car of 2025,' stating: 'I'm sorry, just like everybody else, when this car was announced, I was blown away. I thought it was one of the best designed vehicles in the last 15 years.
'I think this car looks gorgeous - from the outside.
'The first time I actually went to go review this car and actually sit in it and drive in it, I sat in this car and was underwhelmed.'
He continued: 'It seemed like the interior was an afterthought, which some people might say, "Tomi, it's Lexus, it's an off-roader." But, I'm sorry, when you're spending $80,000 on a vehicle like this, this is something that they should have given more thought.
'I'm sorry, but the Land Cruiser interior is just as nice - if not better - than the interior on this car, which is absolutely insane.
'Now, I understand the outside of this car looks better, but I would honestly go with a Land Cruiser versus the GX550.
'Combine this with their so-little inventory because so many people are preordering this car. It is not worth the mark-up, it is not worth the hype, it is not worth the wait.
'In my opinion, a lot of people were backing out of their orders once they see these cars because they are underwhelmed with the interior.
'I expect this car to fall off super hard. I really hope Lexus puts some extra effort into the interior over the next few years because if it doesn't, I think this car will struggle.'
A few viewers agreed with Tomislav's picks.
'When I was younger, I wanted a Wrangler SO BAD. Then I got adult money and test drove one. Absolutely not,' a person shared.
'Couldn't agree more with the RAV4. It's so boring and uninteresting,' someone wrote.
'This video was crazy good. Nailed it on all of them,' one person applauded.
'This is very helpful information to know! Thank you,' someone thanked.
Another said: 'This is a perfect list.'

Xpeng and Huawei have revealed a mega, 87in head-up display...

Future Tech ... that takes over the whole windscreen and uses augmented reality Skip 1 photos in the image carousel and continue reading Xpeng has taken the old adage 'go big or go home' literally, and created a mega head-up display (HUD) that covers the whole windscreen . Partnering with Huawei, the AR-HUD uses augmented reality to give navigation directions, alert drivers to safety issues, and minimise, reaction times, blind spots and, er, distracted driving. Advertisement - Page continues below The 87-inch (woah) display shows the speed limit, the speed of the car, the nav directions, plus the time it'll take to get to wherever you're going. Oh, and should you drive the wrong way down a road (more common than you might think), a graphical and unmissable 'X' will flash up on the screen. You might like The system will show how it plans to execute self-parking manoeuvres too, and in dense fog will flag up corners to reduce the odds of getting suddenly familiar with the nearest hedge/ditch/ravine/sheer cliff face. Nice. The two companies hope to use the massive HUD to engender trust with drivers, particularly when driver assistance – and subsequently self-driving – features are deployed. 'The system will show when the car needs to overtake, it will show the choice of the overtaking path," explains Chen Yonghai, vice president of Xiaopeng Automobile. Cadillac's new Optiq-V is coming this autumn... with 519bhp

USA That means 0-62mph in 3.5 ish seconds. In a crossover. Yikes! Skip 12 photos in the image carousel and continue reading This is the brawny new Optic-V, the hot version of Cadillac's cosy crossover, and it's due to hit shelves in the autumn. American shelves, that is, not UK ones. Dang and blast. It's the second instalment in Caddy's 'V' performance EV portfolio – following the Lyriq, you'll remember – and the numbers are not to be scoffed at: 519bhp and 650lb ft from its dual-motor/all-wheel drive setup. Advertisement - Page continues below Activate the launch control and 'Velocity Max' driving mode, and 0-62mph is sorted in around 3.5 seconds. Cadillac's also tightened up the steering, enhanced the suspension and thrown in Brembo calipers at the front for a stronger show around the twisty bits. You might like As for the battery, its 85kWh pack is supposedly good for 275 miles of range. The Optiq-V is also the first GM-built vehicle to get a dedicated NACS charging port for use with Tesla's supercharger network, and means a 10-minute pit stop should regain 70 miles. Elsewhere, you'll spot a 'V-Mode' button on the steering wheel to save your various driving settings, sorta like BMW does with its 'M' driver modes. There's also a 'Competitive Mode' which enables a 'unique sound experience', though we're yet to know if this means a typically synthesised e-motor rumble or a series of whale noises. Advertisement - Page continues below On the design front, the Optiq-V gets a new front fascia with a mesh lower grille, a more aggressive front splitter, rear diffuser and boot lid wing. You can get all this lot in carbon as an optional extra. 21in satin graphite alloys with low-profile summer tyres are dropped in as standard, with blue brake calipers concluding the exterior changes. Internally, the base colour is black with a choice of blue or grey accents, and the fabric pattern is darker than the non-V car. There's a fair bit of carbon fibre on the centre console, and a more performance-y steering wheel in place. Generic traits include a panoramic glass roof, 19-speaker AKG Dolby Atmos audio system and a 33in diagonal LED display. Yes, 33in . Household TVs were that size in the not-too-distant past. Standard Super Cruise technology is programmed in, and supplemented by many radars, cameras and sensors to deploy the various safety technologies. Blind Zone Steering, Forward Collision Alert, you know the deal. Pricing for the Optiq-V starts at an MSRP of $68,795 - subject to change depending on the usual freight charge, dealer fees, additional whale noise choices and so on.

GMC Sierra EV Review 2025

It's the Sierra EV, the Hummer-spawned electric pickup General Motors has ginned up to rival the likes of the Ford F-150 Lightning, the Rivian R1T and, well, that's it, really. The young segment is thin on any serious offerings, with automakers struggling with the 'why' as much as the 'how'. Ford focuses on folks looking for a work truck while Rivian's got the techy status-seekers covered, so where does the Sierra EV slot in? Frankly, wherever it can fit. Sure is a big'un. You're not kidding. Coming in at nearly 9,000lbs and 19.45ft (almost 6m) long, the mighty Sierra is as expansive as the geological mass it's named after. And it is mighty. It has to be, if only to just get itself around. Advertisement - Page continues below The three flavors of Sierra EV are configured with three battery sizes, all of which connect to a dual motor setup – one for the front and back – which dictate the power on offer. The good-better-best structure for these batteries is here called the 119kWh standard, 170kWh extended, and the205 kWh max range. Good? Let's continue. The entry-level Elevation trim has 645hp while the mid-tier AT4 model has either 625 or 725hp on tap, and the Denali tops out at 760hp with the max range battery. Available torque between the models and battery configurations is between 765 to 785lb ft. All the while, the Sierra EV has an estimated range of 410 miles at a minimum , while GM's best guess at maximum range is 478. Either way you slice it, that's a hefty handful of miles. We're guessing all the usual caveats come with this? Oh of course. Drive like mad, tow a house, etc, and you'll see a drop-off, but the ample amount of range here means it can take the hit. We started our day in an AT4 with a max range battery partially charged to around 80 percent, giving us about 380 miles to play with. By the end of the day, driving over 120 miles to and from our off-roading spot and running it through several loops with the AC blasting the whole time… we only used 15 percent of our supply. Advertisement - Page continues below Fairly comfortable, if a little disconnected. Models like the AT4 eschew the air suspension option in favor of a more durable conventional coil setup, and you're not left feeling like you're missing out. A massive amount of power on demand means the Sierra is quick to respond to inputs. Engage max power and the burly truck will punch forward fast enough to send a headrest into a passenger's melon with the force of a boxing champ. That said, the sheer weight of the truck catches up just as fast, dragging it down almost as soon as it gets going. Road driving is otherwise unobtrusive, save for the visibility which is an unavoidable issue with the mammoth pickup. Thankfully the Sierra is sorted out with a number of cameras and sensors to assist in navigating the world immediately surrounding you. Both on the road and off, rear-wheel steering works mechanical magic to seemingly bend the car around objects, and of course it's pre-packaged with Super Cruise for hands-free highway riding. What about off-road? GM is bringing the off-road-ready AT4 line to the Sierra EV this year, so that means this is the truckiest version available for dirty excursions. Coil suspension, four-wheel steering and a 'terrain' drive mode that's essentially one-pedal driving for rock-crawling. Given its weight, taking surface conditions into account is more critical than ever lest it sink into the soil, forever entrenched or push loose earth away from underneath it. READ MORE GMC Hummer EV review: watch the 1,000bhp EV put through its paces 'But Top Gear,' you whine, 'surely heavy vehicles have traveled off-road before, why so snarky here?' Because the vehicles you're thinking of often have big knobby wheels or tank treads. This does not. What other neat tricks? To quickly rattle off a few, there's the maximum towing capacity of 12,300lbs, 800 volt DC fast charging which means it can regain 100 miles of range in just 10 minutes on the right charger, vehicle-to-home charging if needed, and a nifty midgate that opens up to extend the cargo space to almost 11 feet. Oh and crabwalk! It can walk like a crab. Sort of. 'It's constantly trying to get around itself… before it can be the thing you need it to be' The Sierra EV is an impressive machine manifested from the ambitious exercise of overlapping two genres of vehicles that are often at opposition. GMC's take supplies the tech, capability and range demanded by both EV and truck nuts (not those truck nuts) rather successfully, but even after experiencing it for ourselves, we're still chewing on if it was worth the effort. In short, it's constantly trying to get around itself in one way or another before it can be the thing you need it to be. While the models with the coil suspension provide much-needed ruggedness and reliability to tackle its truck duties, its weight is a critical factor in where you plan to take it. Additionally, its gluttonous amount of miles is what you'd expect given you're carrying around a slab of batteries, you just can't help but wonder if there was a better way to achieve the same results. Still, it does what GMC says it will do, for whomever that may be.
