
Oceans Heating Faster In Two Bands Stretching Around Globe

The first band at 40 to 45 degrees south is heating at the worlds fastest pace, with the effect especially pronounced around New Zealand, Tasmania, and Atlantic waters east of Argentina.
The world's oceans are heating faster in two bands stretching around the globe, and New Zealand is in one of them, according to new research led by climate scientist Dr Kevin Trenberth.
In both hemispheres, the areas are near 40 degrees latitude.
The first band at 40 to 45 degrees south is heating at the world's fastest pace, with the effect especially pronounced around New Zealand, Tasmania, and Atlantic waters east of Argentina.
The second band is around 40 degrees north, with the biggest effects in waters east of the United States in the North Atlantic and east of Japan in the North Pacific.
'This is very striking,' says Trenberth, of the University of Auckland and the National Center of Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado. 'It's unusual to discover such a distinctive pattern jumping out from climate data,' he says.
Ocean heating upsets marine ecosystems, increases atmospheric levels of water vapour, which is a powerful greenhouse gas, and fuels rain-storms and extreme weather.
The heat bands have developed since 2005 in tandem with poleward shifts in the jet stream, the powerful winds above the Earth's surface that blow from west to east, and corresponding shifts in ocean currents, according to Trenberth and his co-authors in the Journal of Climate.
The scientists processed an 'unprecedented' volume of atmospheric and ocean data to assess 1 degree latitude strips of ocean to a depth of 2000m for the period from 2000 to 2023, Trenberth says. Changes in heat content, measured in zettajoules, were compared with a 2000-04 baseline.
Besides the two key zones, sizeable increases in heat took place in the area from 10 degrees north to 20 degrees south, which includes much of the tropics. However, the effect was less distinct because of variations caused by the El Niño-Southern Oscillation climate pattern, Trenberth says.
'What is unusual is the absence of warming in the subtropics, near 20 degrees latitude, in both hemispheres,' he says.
Co-authors of the paper were Lijing Cheng and Yuying Pan, of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, John Fasullo of NCAR, and Michael Mayer of the University of Vienna and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts.
'Despite what Donald Trump thinks, the climate is changing because of the build-up of greenhouse gases, and most of the extra heat ends up in the ocean,' says Trenberth. 'However, the results are by no means uniform, as this research shows. Natural variability is likely also at play.'

Number of students studying for Master's in AI triples at Auckland University

Photo: Supplied The head of a university course offering a masters degree in Artificial Intelligence says student numbers have more than tripled since it began last year. Dr Thomas Lacombe, the director of Auckland University's Master of Artificial Intelligence programme, said about 30 students took part in 2024 and this year's cohort was around 100. Most came from a science background, but there were students from other disciplines, and around 10 to 15 were professional people. "[They] are currently working, some of them full-time, and taking the programme to upskill in AI as part of their career." Most New Zealand universities now offered AI-related degrees and courses. Auckland's Masters programme included technical learning, ethics, academic research, and applying AI within business. Lacombe said it was "tricky" to guess where students would end up working. "A lot of the jobs are being created right now, or they are evolving. Most of the students from the first course are only graduating now," he said. "But it can lead to jobs around AI machine learning engineering. It can be students working for companies who are developing new AI tools or new AI algorithms. "A lot of students could go into jobs where they are applying AI in a specific domain, to solve problems. I think this will have the most impact in industry." Other students would follow an academic pathway, he added. "So, researching AI, perhaps by doing a PhD." Earlier this month, the students took part in a "weekend hackathon" collaborating in small groups to design and develop AI tools to address "real-world challenges" facing researchers and universities. One included helping researchers apply for grants by helping them fill out forms more efficiently, and more effectively, giving them a better chance of being selected. Nick Kearns, of the university's Research and Innovation Office, said the university would look at supporting the students to develop the tools. Students Unveil AI Creations At University Of Auckland Hackathon
Press Release – University of Auckland The AI tools were designed and developed over five weeks to address real-world challenges facing researchers and universities in New Zealand and overseas. University of Auckland students unveiled their artificial intelligence creations – prototypes for AI agents – at a weekend hackathon, the culmination of their Master of Artificial Intelligence (MAI) course. In the novel, high-pressure event, 21 teams presented proof-of-concept AI agents to a panel of judges from IBM and the University on campus on 7-8 June. The AI tools were designed and developed over five weeks to address real-world challenges facing researchers and universities in New Zealand and overseas. 'It's what they'll be doing in real life – collaborating with colleagues to get the most out of the AI tools available and solve real-world problems' says Dr Thomas Lacombe, the director of the MAI programme. 'We were impressed with what we saw.' The AI agents – a term for software systems that use AI to complete tasks – were developed using IBM watsonx. The tools would help researchers by: providing initial feedback on proposals for research funding; pre-screening ethics applications for human and animal research; and advising on export permit requirements for sensitive research. 'We were delighted to be able to partner with the Master of Artificial Intelligence team and IBM on this hackathon,' said Nick Kearns, of the University's Research and Innovation Office. 'It was great to see the students demonstrate secure and scalable solutions.' The University will investigate supporting the students in developing the tools for implementation, Kearns says. The students, who took part in teams of four or five, are part of the second cohort for the Master of Artificial Intelligence programme, which debuted last year, teaching AI through academic, technical, ethical and business lenses. Technical support for the hackathon was provided by IBM mentors and ElementX, as well as subject matter experts and researchers from across the University.
