World Rapid and Blitz Teams

Spectator18-06-2025
It was a treat to see so many of the world's top players in London for the World Rapid and Blitz Team Championships last week. Now in its third edition, the event has an unusual format, in which teams of six must include one female player and one rated below 2000 (roughly, a strong club player). That drew a sociable mix of teams, including traditional clubs, both from the UK and abroad, some national teams, and some teams with corporate sponsorship.
My team, Malcolm's Mates (Malcolm Pein is the federation's international director), had a considerable overlap with the English national team, with additional strong players from abroad. But we were knocked out of the blitz event by WR Chess, whose team of superstars (including the reigning world blitz champion Ian Nepomniachtchi, as well as Hikaru Nakamura and Alireza Firouzja) went on to win the whole thing. In the final round of the rapid event, we were beaten by the winning team MGD1, named after the Indian chess management firm whose star player is 21-year-old Arjun Erigaisi, currently ranked fourth in the world.
Perhaps the most beautiful game of the event was the one below, in which Erigaisi was beaten by Viswanathan Anand. The former world champion, now the deputy president of Fide, remains a formidable player at the age of 55 and represented the team Freedom, who also sponsored Fide's individual World Rapid and Blitz event in New York last year. Anand joked later that the game made him feel like a one-trick pony, referring to the similarity with his celebrated game against Levon Aronian at Wijk aan Zee, 2013, in which his bishops also bore down on the white kingside with decisive effect.

In case of 18…exd5, Erigaisi might have been tempted by 19 Qd4 Bf8 20 Nf6+ gxf6 21 Rc3, when the threats of Rc3-g3+ and Qd4xf6 pose severe problems. Nc5 19 Qd4 f6 20 Nxc5 Bxc5 21 Qg4 f5 Now 21…exd5 22 Qxd7 Rxd7 23 Bg4 wins rook for bishop. Opening the long diagonal for the Bb2 looks risky, but Anand has lined up a nimble counterattack. 22 dxe6 Qe7 23 Qxf5 Rd2 24 Bd3 g6 25 Qe5 (see diagram) Walking into Anand's trap. It was time to bail out with 25 Qf7+ Qxf7 26 exf7+ Kxf7 27 Bc2 when Black's active pieces provide ample compensation for the pawn, so the game remains balanced. Rxb2!! Forced, as White was threatening mate, but also the start of a dazzling combination. 26 Qxb2 Qg5 27 g3 The f-pawn is pinned by the Bc5, so f2-f3 was impossible, but now the light squares around the king are fatally weakened. Qg4! This wonderful quiet move had to be seen by Anand far in advance. The chief threat is Qg4-f3, while 28 Qe2 is met by Bf3 with Qg4-h3 to follow. 28 Qf6 Rf8 Yet again, the only winning move. 29 e7 Rxf6 30 e8=Q+ Rf8 31 Qe2 Bf3 White resigns

He touched Declan Rice's corner in on the line after Altay Bayindir could only punch the ball goalwards. The Gunners took the lead in the 13th minute and were able to hold firm despite the host's pressure. They offered little at the other end of the pitch however with Bukayo Saka not his usual self. Gabriel Martinelli also did little to prove why he deserves a starting role with summer signing Noni Madueke waiting in the wings. Here is how SunSport's Charlie Wyett rated the Arsenal display... DAVID RAYA - 6 Little to do until the 74th minute when he made a big save from Bryan Mbuemo BEN WHITE - 5 Given a real test by Patrick Dorgu, particularly before half-time, and did look a bit rusty - although not the only one. WILLIAM SALIBA - 5 Made things awkward for Bayindir for the goal but at the back he looked seriously ropey. MARTIN ODEGAARD - 5 Needs a much better season than last term when he struggled. Some of his decision-making with the ball was really bad. BUKAYO SAKA - 5 Had a few bright moments in the first half but Luke Shaw did a decent job on him. Could have scored at the end but Matthijs de Ligt delivered a fine block. GABRIEL MARTINELLI -5 Gets a lot of stick from Arsenal fans and this performance really did not help him. Could have no complaints at being taken off. 6 VIKTOR GYOKERES - 6 Put in a shift and did get behind the United defence but he needs to be given much better service. 6 Viktor Gyokeres had an uninspiring debut Credit: Reuters SUBS KAI HAVERTZ (FOR GYOKERES, 60 MINS) - 5 A few nice moments but unable to make a breakthrough. NONI MADUEKE (FOR MARTINELLI, 60 MINS) - 5 Saw little of the ball but could have scored deep into injury time. JURRIEN TIMBER (FOR WHITE, 72 MINS) - 5 First competition game since his ankle operation and did fine. MYLES LEWIS-SKELLY (FOR CALAFIORI, 72 MINS) - 5 Will have been disappointed not to start. MIKEL MERINO (FOR RICE, 83 MINS) - 5 No time to make an impact.

Ryan Reynolds says he and Rob McElhenney don't make Wrexham ‘football decisions'

Wrexham have had a meteoric rise under their Hollywood owners, becoming the first team in the history of English football's top five divisions to secure three successive promotions. Reynolds and McElhenney were at the SToK Cae Ras on Saturday to watch Wrexham play their first home game in the second tier of English football since May 1982. But there was no Hollywood ending as West Brom won 3-2 to leave the Red Dragons without a Championship point after two games. 'We have a very hands-off management style,' Deadpool star Reynolds told Sky Sports. 'Our job is to listen, learn, and tell the story. And that's I think a great position for any ownership group to be in, to really just be there to support and tell the story. 'We don't make football decisions. And it's actually the great gift of that is that we're able to have relationships with the players at Wrexham, whereas most people in our position can't. 'So we have a relationship with every single one of our players.' The Welsh club's commercial success – fuelled by Reynolds and McElhenney's celebrity status and the award-winning 'Welcome to Wrexham' documentary series – has allowed them to invest heavily in Phil Parkinson's squad with nine summer signings. Wrexham have broken their transfer record three times this summer and Wales striker Nathan Broadhead, signed from Ipswich in a deal worth up to £10million, made his debut against West Brom. McElhenney said: 'It's interesting to get accolades when you hear people say, 'Oh, you guys have done a pretty good job with the club. 'The truth is we don't really have anything to do with what happens out on the pitch. 'We've got our very specific job, which is to be clowns and to tell the story as best we can. 'But also to be as respectful as we possibly can to what Phil does on the pitch and what the executive team, Michael (Williamson) and Shaun (Harvey) and Humphrey (Ker) and everybody does off the pitch. 'We just have an incredible team and we just get to sit back and be fans and document the process.'

Chelsea 0 Crystal Palace 0: New-look Blues a huge disappointment as VAR saves them after Eze free-kick disallowed

Problems with a new ticketing system delayed the unveiling of two rather underwhelming banners. Just five weeks after being crowned kings of the world, their bid to be serious contenders for the Premier League title took an early knock. Winning a glorified invitational event in mid-summer is one thing. Taking three points from a competitive game against most teams in the English top flight is quite another. Boss Enzo Maresca warned as much before the game, reminding everyone that Crystal Palace had beaten Manchester City and champions Liverpool in two showpiece occasions. Palace might even have won but for a VAR intervention. By the letter of Law 13 - unlucky for some - Marc Guehi had been too close to the Chelsea wall when he cleared out Moises Caicedo. Tottenham target Eberechi Eze smashed the free kick past Robert Sanchez and celebrated like it might be his last goal for the Eagles. CASINO SPECIAL - BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS 9 Eze was distraught after his opener was denied Credit: EPA 9 Guehi was the unlucky victim of the unusual rule being called into effect Credit: Getty Then referee Darren England was called to the monitor and agreed it should be ruled out. Neither side did enough to deserve to win, creating few chances between them. Ex-Premier League ref on Eberechi Eze's disallowed goal vs Chelsea But Chelsea will be the more disappointed that a third game in the row between the two teams ended in stalemate. After the disappointment of the Club World Cup banners, genuine joy almost arrived inside three minutes when Marc Cucurella headed a corner goalwards, but Palace's Ismaila Sarr nodded the ball off the line. Meanwhile the away fans were in no mood to celebrate their own recent success, in the FA Cup and Community Shield. And no wonder. Although cup final matchwinner Eze and captain Marc Guehi both started the game, both may be gone before the transfer window closes. What is certain is that the Europa League place they played such a big part in earning, has already been taken off them. The Palace supporters soon launched into a loud, foul-mouthed chant cursing Uefa, former owner John Textor, whose involved with French club Lyon caused the issue, and Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis, whose complaint led to his club being promoted from the Conference League at Palace's expense. Within 13 minutes, the travelling support could add VAR to the list of those conspiring against them. Eze thought he had given his team the lead with a thumping free kick. But VAR Hames Bell advised referee England to take a look at the monitor. Most neutrals will feel it was a clever, legitimate goal. Or no less legitimate than the set-piece routines that involved blatant blocking of opponents, with zero intention to play the ball. But Guehi's shoulder-barge on Caicedo led to the goal being ruled out. Palace were encouraged, though, and a fine move ended with Jean-Philippe Mateta drawing a save from Robert Sanchez. Chelsea lacked any kind of attacking flow, with Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro in particular denied space by a well-drilled Palace defence. 9 Enzo Maresca will not be pleased with the Blues' performance at Stamford Bridge Credit: Reuters Blues defender Trevoh Chalobah should have scored, rather than ballooning the ball over the bar when it fell to him after some penalty-area pinball. But otherwise the home team created precious little. Was the lack of fluency caused by the absence of Levi Colwill? Maresca had complained pre-match about the club's reluctance to buy him a new ball-playing centre back and said Tosin Adarabioyo was the only fit central defender capable of playing the Colwill role. Tosin was then injured in Saturday training, so rookie defender Josh Acheampong made only his third Premier League start. The biggest Chelsea cheers of the half were for Acheampong's crunching tackle on Daniel Munoz, and for his brave follow-up challenge which drew a foul from Mateta that earned the Palace striker a booking. 9 Cole Palmer was not able to drag his side to three points on opening weekend Credit: Getty Palace, too, struggled to fashion chances and looked most dangerous from set-pieces. Little changed early in the second half and Maresca had seen enough after less than nine minutes. Neither of his wingers had been effective, but it was Jamie Gittens who came off, with Pedro Neto swapping to the left side. On came teenage sensation Estevao to huge acclaim. Moments later Mateta should have been sent off. His foul on Caicedo was spiteful and fully deserving of a second yellow card. Estevao's first action was to rinse Guehi and cross just too high for Neto to head in at the far post. 9 Willian Estevao impressed early on in his Premier League debut Credit: Reuters Chelsea began to take a firm grip on the game, camped in the Palace half. When a Palmer cross was deflected into Estevao's path, he first miscontrolled the ball, then sent it flashing high and wide. With 17 minutes to go, Maresca sent on Liam Delap to be the hero, to no avail. 9 Liam Delap also featured for the Blues, but could not make the impact he was hoping for Credit: PA Eze forced a save from Sanchez late on but neither side deserved to win.
