'Ball bounces like a rabbit'
Paris St-Germain manager Luis Enrique has criticised the pitches at the Club World Cup and said the "ball bounced like a rabbit" during his side's win against the Seattle Sounders. The match was played at Seattle's Lumen Field, home of MLS side the Sounders and NFL team the Seattle Seahawks, with the stadium's artificial turf replaced with a temporary hybrid grass for the tournament. The Spaniard says football's world governing body Fifa need to "bear in mind" the quality of match and training pitches if it wants the Club World Cup to be "the most high-level competition in the world"."I wouldn't imagine an NBA court full of holes," the 55-year-old said after his side won 2-0 to secure top spot in Group B in the tournament, which is being solely hosted in the United States."What I really care about is the state of the field of play, and I say this on the day we've won."The ball bounces almost like if it were jumping around like a rabbit."
PSG won the Champions League at the end of May with a dominant victory over Inter Milan in Munich to complete a European and domestic treble.Enrique admitted his team have had to adjust the way they play since their arrival in the US because of pitch conditions."Lumen Field is an example, it used to be artificial turf and now it is natural grass and they have to water it by hand - they did so at half-time but the field was dry again in 10 minutes," he added. "For our game this a problem. It's very different to European pitches. The grass is different and therefore it is not so easy to have the same smoothness to play our style - but we did adapt well and we're very happy."
Concerns for the World Cup
There are fewer than 12 months before the Fifa World Cup takes place across Canada, Mexico and United States.Real Madrid's Jude Belligham also criticised the pitches at the Club World Cup after his side's 3-1 win over Pachuca."The pitches aren't great at all. It holds up the ball, the ball barely bounces," said the England midfielder."It's tough on the knees as well. Hopefully, there's someone who will look at that going into the World Cup next year."Five of the venues from this year - Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Hard Rock Stadium, MetLife Stadium, Lincoln Financial Field and Lumen Field - will also host World Cup matches. All five are used for NFL stadiums and use artificial turf but will have real grass installed in time for the World Cup to meet Fifa requirements. The Club World Cup is not the first time the standard of pitches in the US have caused problems.Players were critical of conditions at last summer's Copa America, with Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez saying the field at Mercedes-Benz Stadium was a "disaster" following a win over Canada.Tournament organiser Conmebol defended the pitches, with director of competitions Fredirico Nantes saying "the grass in Atlanta posed absolutely no threat".The stadium will host eight matches at the World Cup next summer, including a semi-final.
The state of the pitches is the latest problem that has been raised at the Club World Cup.There have been concerns about the weather throughout the competition, with extreme heat causing problems for the players.Borussia Dortmund substitutes watched the first half of their win over Mamelodi Sundowns from the dressing room because of the temperature, with their manager Niko Kovac saying conditions were "like a sauna".Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has said his side have struggled to train in Philadelphia, as temperatures reached 37C. BBC Sport has contacted Fifa for comment.

BREAKING NEWS Caitlin Clark's teammate DeWanna Bonner 'has no interest' in playing for Indiana Fever again and wants a trade
The Indiana Fever roster looks set for a reshuffle after it emerged that DeWanna Bonner is desperate for a trade away from the team. Bonner was only signed by the team in February on a one-year deal - at the time, it seemed a smart move to put Caitlin Clark with the two-time WNBA champion as the Fever tried to build on her stunning rookie year. But so far, the Fever are yet to hit top form and are 6-7 before Tuesday night's game against Seattle Storm. They have not been helped by Clark missing two weeks with a thigh issue. But hours before Clark and her team hit the court on the west coast, Front Office Sports claimed Bonner 'has no interest' in playing for the Fever again after being ruled out of first-team action for personal reasons. She started the first three games and then was benched in favor of Lexie Hull before the team said that issues away from the court had ruled her out. As per FoS, Bonner would favor a trade to either Atlanta Dream or the Phoenix Mercury.

Lyon to appeal against relegation to Ligue 2 over financial problems
The seven-time French champions were hit with a provisional relegation back in November after racking up massive debts, and although they have since sold a number of first-team players, French football watchdog the DNCG upheld the relegation following meetings on Tuesday. The decision was announced by the French Football League (LFP) on Tuesday evening. Monaco, Nantes and Paris FC will face no further action. Lyon quickly announced they would appeal against what the club called an 'incomprehensible decision'. While the decision could yet be overturned, the relegation of a club that won seven consecutive titles between 2001-02 and 2007-08, and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League as recently as 2020, will send shockwaves through French football. If the relegation is upheld, Lyon would be replaced in the top flight by Reims, who lost the relegation play-off to Metz. Lyon president John Textor told L'Equipe last week he was confident the club's financial position had been resolved, having said back in November there was 'no chance' the club would be relegated. Textor is in the process of selling his shares in Premier League club Crystal Palace, who are at risk of being denied their place in the Europa League next season as Lyon have also qualified after finishing sixth in Ligue 1. A sale to Woody Johnson, owner of the NFL's New York Jets, has been agreed but the Premier League is yet to ratify the deal and Johnson must yet pass the Premier League's owners' and directors' test. L'Olympique Lyonnais prend acte de la décision incompréhensible rendue par la DNCG ce soir et confirme qu'il fera immédiatement appel 🗞 Le communiqué 👇 — Olympique Lyonnais (@OL) June 24, 2025 After receiving the provisional relegation last year, Lyon sold the likes of Said Benrahma, Anthony Lopes and Maxence Caqueret in January, and this summer they have already sold Rayan Cherki to Manchester City. In a statement, Lyon announced they would fight against the ruling. 'Olympique Lyonnais acknowledges the incomprehensible decision handed down by the DNCG this evening and confirms that it will immediately appeal,' the statement said. 'Over the past few months, we have worked closely with the DNCG, meeting all of its demands with equity investments in excess of the amounts requested. 'Thanks to equity contributions from our shareholders and the sale of Crystal Palace, our cash position has improved significantly, and we have more than sufficient resources for the 2025-26 season. 'With proven funds and sporting success that has earned us a place in European competition two years in a row, we sincerely do not understand how an administrative decision could have relegated such a major French club. 'We will appeal to demonstrate our ability to provide the necessary financial resources to ensure OL's continued presence in Ligue 1.'

Revealed: How Inter Milan star escaped Tehran after US forces bombed Iran's nuclear sites amid ongoing Isreal conflict
Inter Milan striker Mehdi Taremi is reportedly 'calm' and 'safe', having made a hasty exit from the Iranian capital Tehran following US air strikes last weekend. The 32-year-old travelled by road to his hometown Bushehr, a trip of almost a thousand kilometers towards the south of Iran, a report has claimed. There, the Iran international, who returned to the Middle East to play in World Cup qualifiers earlier this month, was reportedly reunited with his family and has been in contact with Inter team manager Matteo Tagliacarne and head coach Cristian Chivu. According to La Gazetta dello Sport, Taremi reassured his worried team-mates - who are currently in the US contesting the Club World Cup - of his condition, insisting that he is 'fine, calm and safe' and away from areas that have been bombed in recent days. It follows Monday's announcement by US President Donald Trump that he had brokered a ceasefire between Iran and Israel after ordering his own strike on three Iranian nuclear sites over the weekend. Trump had called Saturday's air strikes on the nuclear sites a 'spectacular military success' and gave a stark warning to Iran that more attacks would be coming if the regime didn't make peace. Earlier Monday, Iran had retaliated by sending missiles toward the US's largest military base in the Middle East, located just outside of Doha in Qatar, which didn't prompt a response from Trump. Instead he announced the ceasefire. On Tuesday morning Trump was fired up after Israel decided to launch another massive assault on Iran just as the deal was to take hold. The furious President then went on a foul-mouthed tirade saying that both Israel and Iran violated the ceasefire deal that he announced Monday evening. 'We basically have two countries that have been fighting so long and so hard that they don't know what the f*** they're doing,' Trump said before boarding Marine One en route to the NATO Summit early Tuesday morning. A fragile ceasefire is currently being observed by the two nations, though tensions remain high. Taremi, who has been capped 89 times for Iran, did have the possibility of joining his team-mates Stateside, according to reports in Italy, but recent events have now ruled that out. The tournament could have been the last time he played for the Serie A club amid intense speculation that he could depart this summer. According to Sky Sports Italia, Premier League sides Nottingham Forest and Fulham are among the sides interested in acquiring him in this window.
