Dubai-based bizman abducted in Bengaluru, four arrested
The businessman, who was held captive for seven days, managed to alert the residents of the neighbouring flat about his kidnapping.
Based on a complaint, Ashok Nagar police, who swung into action, rescued him and arrested four of the accused. The businessman's ex-girlfriend and three others involved in the crime are absconding.
The arrested have been identified as Salman Pasha, 22, of DJ Halli, Mohammed Nawaz, 27, from KG Halli, and Mohammed Asif, 42, and Mohammed Suhel, 25, of RT Nagar.
According to police, Lawrence Melvani, 37, who recently returned to Bengaluru from Dubai, lived in a lodge in Indiranagar. On July 16, his ex-girlfriend Mahima contacted him and requested to meet her. She booked a cab for him. After picking him from Indiranagar, the driver stopped the car near Koramangala, where three men barged in, blindfolded him and took him to a serviced apartment.
The accused forced him to part with Rs 1 lakh in cash and two iPhones. They then assaulted him demanding Rs 2.5 crore. On July 23, Melvani managed to alert the family living in the neighbouring flat from the washroom of the serviced apartment about his kidnapping.
Meanwhile, Melvani's family members alerted the police after they could not contact him for several days. Before the police could reach the serviced apartment, the accused bundled Melvani into a car and headed towards Tumakuru Road. After seeing a police team chasing them, the accused pushed Melvani out of the car and fled. The team intercepted the car after a few hours of chase and arrested the four accused. A senior police officer said Melvani's ex-girlfriend was behind the abduction plot. A search is on to nab her and other accused.

Two gangsters of Lawrence Bishnoi syndicate nabbed after gunfight in Dera Bassi: Police
Police on Tuesday claimed to have apprehended two members of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang after a brief exchange of gunfire on Gulabgarh Road in Dera Bassi, Mohali. One of the arrested gangsters, identified as Sumit Bishnoi from Rajasthan who carried a Rs 50,000 reward on his head, was injured in the shootout. The second accused has been identified as Pankaj, a resident of Sonipat, Haryana. Sharing details of the encounter, SP (D) Saurav Jindal and DSP Bikramjit Singh Brar said the police had received a tip-off that some gangsters were hiding in a PG accommodation on Gulabgarh Road. When the police team knocked on the door of a first-floor room, the gangsters opened fire upon them. In retaliatory firing by the police, gangster Sumit Bishnoi sustained injuries. Both suspects were successfully overpowered and taken into custody, the officials said. Police recovered a country-made pistol and four live cartridges from the accused. According to police, Sumit was wanted in a murder case in Hanumangarh, Rajasthan, where he and two accomplices had allegedly killed a 35-year-old man named Mahaveer. While the Rajasthan Police had already arrested the other two accused, Sumit had been on the run. He had been hiding in the PG with Pankaj since June 22. The officers said that the police are currently investigating how the accused arrived in Dera Bassi and whether they were planning any criminal activities here.

Officials destroy 93,217 kg of banned tobacco products in Namakkal
Namakkal: Tamil Nadu food safety and drug administration department (TNFSDAD) officials have destroyed 93,217 kg of banned tobacco products that were seized from several shops in Namakkal district in the last four months. District designated officer Dr J Thangavignesh said TNFSDAD officials, along with local authorities, conducted inspections at 75,593 shops between April and July. "A total of 93,217 kg of banned tobacco products were seized from 174 shops," the officer stated. A total fine of Rs. 35.5 lakh was levied on 142 food traders for the first offence, Rs 15.5 lakh on 31 food traders for the second offence and Rs 1,00,000 on one food trader for the third offence. The shop licence of the third-time offender was suspended for 30 days.

6-year jail for Bihar man for cheating rlys
Ranchi: Railway magistrate Bijai Yadav on Tuesday sentenced a railway ticket fraudster to six years' imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 2 lakh on him. The fruad would have to undergo additional three months' jail term for default in payment. Magistrate Bijai Yadav sentenced Bir Bahadur Sahni, a native of Muzzafarpur district in Bihar, to two years each under sections 318 (4) and 336 and one year each under sections 340 and 341 (2) of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). All the sentences would run consecutively. Sources said Sahni used to purchase general class tickets for short distances in trains and used mirco stamps to convert it into long distance. He used to reach the stations when the trains were about to srat the journey and exchanged his fake tickets with genuine ones of gullible passengers. He then used to return to the railway ticket counters and return the tickets of higher value, stating that he did not want to travel. Sahni used to target the general class passengers as ticket checking is not very strict in these coaches. His targets were mainly the workers and economically weaker sections who travelled to different parts of the country. He duped the passengers at both Ranchi and the Hatia stations. Sahni was nabbed by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) from the Hatia police station limits in an operation carried out on December 8 2024. A total of 70 micro stamps of different stations and 45 of different prices, which were used to change the nature of the tickets, were seized from him. The convict is lodged in Birsa Munda Central Jail. The prosecution examined 11 witnesses to establish its argument during the trail. A case was also registered against Sahni in Lucknow.
