How religion shapes a free and democratic South Africa

South Africa is a secular state in a very special way. We make room for secular, intellectual, cultural and religious views in our public sphere. We welcome expressions of these different voices in public as long as they contribute to building a free and democratic country where alife of dignity, healing, justice, freedom and equality for all is actualised.
As we celebrate Freedom Day on 27 April, let us also remind one another that religious worldviews, faith convictions and practices of a rich diversity of religions can play a distinctive - and even indispensable - role in building a society grounded in dignity and rights for all. The vast majority of South Africans adhere to a diversity of religions.
Religion
Religions exercise a threefold presence in society, namely a prophetic presence, a priestly or pastoral presence and an ethical presence. Prophetic presence is exercised in at least five ways. It entails that religions can help us remember the vision of a new society where dignity for all, healing for all, justice for all, freedom and equality for all reign supreme. The prophetic presence of religions also entails that courageous, informed and fair criticismis offered where there are various forms of betrayal of this vision. Criticism means distinguishing between progress towards materialising this vision and exposing our failure to do so. But criticism also entails self-criticism.
Religions have an ambivalent track-record with regard to embodying human dignity and human rights. They have played both a constructive and a destructive role, as we can see in past and present religious legitimations for racism, sexism, classism, homophobia, ableism, ageism and ecocide (the destruction of the environment by humans).
Madiba
When the Uniting Reformed Church in Southern Africa was established on 14 April 1994, the late Nelson Mandela attended the worship service at the synod. The vice-chairperson of the synod, Reverend Sam Buti of Alexandra in Johannesburg, welcomed Madiba. He expressed appreciation for his father's cherished journey with Madiba in the liberation struggle. He indicated that the new church would support the process of building a free and democratic society. He, however, also pointed out that just as churches opposed the apartheid government, they would criticise and oppose the incoming government if they betray the vision of democracy.
The leadership of synod furthermore decided that Madiba could not address synod, since he was present, not as president of South Africa, but as leader of one of the political parties that were participating in the elections to be held on 27 April. Because we were so excited that Madiba was present, it was not easy to take this decision. With this stance, the synod indicated that churches should impact on political life, but that they should not advantage specific political parties. Two weeks before the birth of democracy, the new church offered clear guidelines for the prophetic presence of churches in a democracy.

The following is what we have gathered as the objectives of the national dialogue: To provide a chance for all South Africans, from all walks of life, to come together and help shape the next chapter of our democracy To define a vision for our country for the next 30 years To bring South Africans together, heal past wounds, and chart a common path forward It will be interesting to know how this national dialogue is going to be measured if it has achieved the above objectives. It aimed to transform the economy into a more competitive, outward-oriented system with increased exports, investment, and labor absorption. Accelerated and Shared Growth Initiative for South Africa (AsgiSA) (2006) with a mandate to reduce unemployment and poverty, while increasing the country's gross domestic product growth rate to a sustainable level of 6% by 2010. The National Development Plan, which is a plan for the country to eliminate poverty and reduce inequality by 2030 through uniting South. (2012) The Economic Reconstruction and Recovery Plan (ERR) (2020), which was a plan to create sustainable, resilient and inclusive economy. It will be of public interest to know if our government is currently implementing the NDP or the ERR. The NDP has been the longest and it was also developed by experts; It will be interesting to know if the current dialogue is the admission of the failed construction of the above plans and policies? The second question is how the lessons from the above plans and policies will be infused into the shaping of the new vision? It is also important to acknowledge that political parties develop and mobilize support using a manifesto. The people vote for the promises made in the manifesto. The Governing party through State of the nation address (SONA) outlines what will be the focus for each financial year in achieving what was promised to voters through a manifesto. Each government department plans get developed and budgeted for in alignment with the SONA promises. The other question is how are all the above going to be aligned to the national dialogue outcome? Political parties and leaders get funded by business with interest in most cases different from me and you. The question is what will guide the ambitious interests from funders of which some of them are foreign? The other question is which side the national dialogue is going to prioritize between voters and the political funders from the fact that the system has shown that political funders have more power than the voter. The environmental assessment of government is that it is at its peak when it comes to corruption, basic standard of living is at its highest, high unemployment and inequality. How are we expected to be united if there are those advancing their interest in having Western cape declare their country and having Orania and other communities designated for a particular race? Is the national dialogue an admission of failure by the GNU led by the ANC? Our economy is import centric and this is implemented and sustained by government. Government refused free open-source implementation, which was going to develop local skills, expertise and create jobs. The 700 million can establish two fruit processing plants in the north coast of KZN and another one in Limpopo. This can create thousands of jobs and better agriculture and economic activities of these two provinces. In contributing to active citizenry telecommunication companies must provide free data sim cards to unemployed, learners and students. Earlier this year, Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber sounded the alarm on what he described as a 'silent crisis' gripping the country, as millions of South Africans continue to live without identity documents. This quandary has only been exacerbated as anti-immigrant groups like Operation Dudula and the March and March Movement demand that those seeking healthcare provide documentation before entering public facilities. "I say there is a silent crisis in the country of undocumented South Africans. There are children who are going to school who didn't have their birth registered," Schreiber told the National Council of Provinces. The minister warned that undocumented children are being denied access to essential rights such as education, healthcare, and social grants. When it comes to figures, undocumented South Africans are in the millions. Lawyers for Human Rights (LHR), a prominent legal advocacy group, has been actively engaged in highlighting the issue of statelessness and undocumented citizens.

Former President Kgalema Motlanthe has firmly dismissed claims that his foundation withdrew from last week's National Dialogue Convention, stating that such reports are misleading and inaccurate. In a statement issued by the Kgalema Motlanthe Foundation (KMF), it was clarified that, unlike the Thabo Mbeki, FW de Klerk, and Desmond and Leah Tutu foundations—which pulled out of the process over disputes with the Presidency regarding timelines and budgetary concerns—Motlanthe's foundation was never part of the convention's preparatory committee. Motlanthe revealed he was invited to attend the gathering in his capacity, but had longstanding commitments tied to the foundation's work. "In the light of several recent publications suggesting that I have withdrawn from the National Convention, it is important to state that the KMF was never part of any federation of foundations, nor part of any preparatory task teams that make up the committees of the National Convention of South Africa, respectively. "It stands to reason that there is no way that we could have officially withdrawn from a process that we were not involved in forming and not a full participant in," the statement read. "As a result, I was unfortunately unable to attend the National Convention at UNISA. However, I sent a letter of support dated August 13, 2025, to the Secretariat of the National Dialogue." Many South Africans have voiced growing frustration over what they perceive as a lack of transparency, rushed planning, and political posturing behind the so-called National Dialogue. Critics argue the process is increasingly alienating civil society rather than uniting it. President Cyril Ramaphosa, in his weekly newsletter, attempted to calm tensions by announcing the establishment of a new steering committee—comprised of civil society representatives—to work alongside the group of eminent persons revealed in July. This body, expected to be formed by the end of August, will guide the next phase of the dialogue. Motlanthe, known for his statesmanlike tone, expressed hope that the dialogue evolves into a platform of equals. 'Each organisation contributes uniquely to our society. We must ensure all voices are heard.' As public scrutiny deepens, the success of the National Dialogue may ultimately depend on whether it can regain trust and genuinely reflect the nation's diverse concerns. IOL Politics
