Longhorns women's basketball adds to their trophy case at international tournament
With the Globl Tournament in the books, Longhorns women's basketball can turn its attention to the 2025-2026 campaign. However, they will be coming back to Austin with some new hardware after an impressive run. The Longhorns finished the tournament with a 3-1 record, earning a silver medal. After starting the tournament with a 3-0 record, Texas lost to Team Canada on Sunday in a 72-65 defeat. In the Longhorns' loss, Rori Harmon scored ten points and dished out nine assists. Madison Booker also shined with 11 points and six rebounds. For the majority of the games, Texas was able to keep the game closer. However, in the second half, Team Canada ended the third quarter on a 6-0 run. They continued to build on their lead by scoring the first five points of the fourth quarter. That gave Team Canada a lead they would not relinquish. In the tournament, Texas was able to record wins over Team Puerto and Team Brazil. They also showed great team chemistry despite many new faces, which has only raised expectations for the 2025-2026 campaign. Last season the Longhorns made it to the Final Four and are looking to make another deep title run. When the Longhorns do return to the court they are expected to be one of the best teams in the SEC after shining on the global stage.

Follow live reaction from tonight's doubleheader of preseason games Imagn Images Week 2 of the NFL preseason got underway with two games tonight before 11 games tomorrow. The Tennessee Titans beat the Atlanta Falcons 23-20 in tonight's first game despite the struggles of QB Cam Ward, who completed only two of his seven passing attempts for 42 yards. In the nightcap, the Seattle Seahawks were impressive in a 33-16 win over the Kansas City Chiefs. Follow all our analysis below as we continue to get you ready for the upcoming NFL season. There was inevitably going to be a ton of attention on the Tennesse Titans' first preseason game. It was the preseason debut for 2025 No. 1 pick Cam Ward at quarterback. How did he perform? According to our Ted Nguyen, Ward's pocket presence was similar to his college days at Miami. ✍️: 'The most impressive part about Ward's debut was that he threw the ball mostly on time, though he could throw it a tick or two earlier at times, while still being aggressive. He had some longer-developing plays called and often threw after one or two hitches and still averaged a robust 11.1 air yards per throw. He converted a third-and-6 and third-and-9, both within the structure of the offense, and displayed the ability to zip in passes and layer passes when necessary.' 2025 tier: Tier 4 Change from 2024: New to tiers Michael Penix Jr. started three games late in his rookie season. It wasn't much to go on. 'I would make him a 3 because, small sample size, but I thought the guy played really well in that two-minute drill against Washington,' an offensive coach said. 'How you play in two-minute is the X-factor for quarterbacks in the NFL. For a young guy, he went in there, and he was slinging it. I think you can win with him and a healthy run game.' Getting the first-team reps this offseason should help. 'His poise, his arm strength made a difference,' an exec said. 'He can make a lot more throws than Kirk (Cousins) could make (last season). His decision-making was really good. His accuracy was spotty at times, but outside of that, he finished strong. He gives you hope.' Imagn Images Michael Penix Jr. will miss his second preseason game of the summer Friday, head coach Raheem Morris said. But from the looks of Tuesday's practice session, the second-year quarterback doesn't need the extra work. Penix was very sharp as the Atlanta Falcons held the first of two joint practices against the Tennessee Titans. The 25-year-old lefty finished 13-of-17 with a 52-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Casey Washington in 11-on-11 work against the Titans' first-team defense. Penix was 4-of-5 with a long touchdown to running back Bijan Robinson on a wheel route in seven-on-seven work. The practice was fully padded but didn't allow tackling to the ground or any contact with the quarterbacks. 'I thought there was some good from the offense,' Falcons running backs coach Michael Pitre said. 'We'll go watch the film and say there are some things we need to clean up, but there was some good physicality, guys were finishing runs and passes (and) we did a decent job of protecting the quarterback.' Williams thought Michael Penix Jr.'s teammates liked him. On Wednesday, he learned it for certain after the Atlanta Falcons quarterback was knocked to the ground during a joint practice against the Tennessee Titans, setting off a large fight that took several minutes to disentangle. 'Obviously, you don't want that,' Williams, Atlanta's quarterbacks coach, said, 'but I take some positives out of it because you saw the guys take up for him. That speaks to his leadership and who he is in that locker room. As coaches, we're upstairs — they're downstairs. We don't really see a lot, but obviously he has a relationship with the guys.' The part that Williams didn't like was seeing his starting quarterback at the bottom of a pile of players surrounded by grappling teammates. After practice, Penix still wasn't sure how he ended up at the bottom of that pile. He did know what started the fight, though. 'I threw a deep pass. They had (said) a lot of words throughout practice, so I gave my words,' he said. 'It just went a little too far. Celebration. Somebody didn't like it, and it went on from there. Everything happened pretty fast.' Penix's trash talk came after a long touchdown pass to receiver Ray-Ray McCloud. The ultimate consensus is that he's 'the best quarterback to ever live,' even after a down 2024 season on an individual level by his lofty standards. ✍️: 'I think Mahomes is the best quarterback to ever live,' an offensive coordinator said, 'but the gap is smaller than it was a year ago. 'This is Mahomes' fifth season as a unanimous Tier 1 selection. Only Aaron Rodgers, with six, has more unanimous selections since QB Tiers debuted in 2014. 'Mahomes is the best quarterback in the world,' a GM said. 'Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson had better individual seasons. In fairness, the infrastructure around Patrick has eroded.' Here is what our Chiefs writer Jesse Newell had to write about the different side of Mahomes in the documentary. ✍️: 'Mahomes also shares an honest moment the day before Super Bowl LIX while getting his hair cut by DeJuan Bonds. We can watch as the barber chair turns into a confessional of sorts for Mahomes, who acknowledges how difficult it is to deal with the barrage of people who have contacted him — and want something from him — in the hours before the biggest game of his life. 'Even after the Super Bowl, Mahomes has unfiltered moments. Mahomes says leaving the football field after the loss to the Philadelphia Eagles was 'one of the low points of my career.' This offseason, coach Raheem Morris has tried to add more intensity to an Atlanta Falcons defense that too often lacked it in 2024. DeMarcco Hellams did his part Friday night in the team's preseason opener, a game that ended with 6:19 left in the fourth quarter with Detroit leading 17-10 after an injury suffered by Lions safety Morice Norris. Hellams was flagged for unnecessary roughness after a first-half hit that broke up a pass and sent Detroit running back Craig Reynolds to the sideline. Hellams, whose shoulder hit Reynolds in the chest as the back was extending to attempt to catch a pass from Hendon Hooker, then was captured by TV cameras flashing his middle finger toward the Lions bench multiple times. The hit was a continuation of the renewed energy Atlanta's defense has shown throughout training camp and was a personal statement for Hellams, a third-year safety. Read more below about the Falcons' defense showing greater intensity. The Atlanta Falcons ended the 2024 season with an 8-9 record, placing second in the NFC South. During Week 18, the Falcons needed to beat the Carolina Panthers and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to lose to the New Orleans Saints to qualify for the playoffs. The Bucs defeated the Saints while the Panthers squeaked by the Falcons in overtime. Atlanta has missed the playoffs for seven straight years. Can 2025 be the season that snaps the streak? It was a season to forget for the Tennessee Titans. They finished 3-14, placing last in the AFC South. The Titans started the season 1-6, which was their worst since 2015. With their Week 18 loss to the Houston Texans, the Titans ended the 2024 campaign with the league's worst record, giving them the first pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. That was the only bright spot for a miserable season as they landed quarterback Cam Ward with the No. 1 pick. Can he be the quarterback of the future in Tennessee? The 2024 season for the Seattle Seahawks was the first in the post-Pete Carroll era. In the inaugural season under coach Mike Macdonald, the Seahawks finished 10-7 but failed to make the playoffs in a highly competitive NFC West. Seattle struggled at home, finishing 3-6 in 2024. But on the road, the Seahawks were dominant, going 7-1. It was the last season with Geno Smith at quarterback and receivers Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf. Smith finished with 4,320 passing yards, 21 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. Lockett tallied 49 catches for 600 yards and two touchdowns. Metcalf recorded 66 receptions for 992 yards and five touchdowns. The Seahawks then traded Smith to the Raiders and Metcalf to the Steelers in the offseason while Lockett signed with the Titans in free agency. The Kansas City Chiefs finished 15-2 in 2024, winning the AFC West. It was the team's 10th consecutive playoff berth. Eleven of the wins were within one score. The Chiefs never registered 30 or more points in any of their 15 victories. The Chiefs advanced to their seventh consecutive AFC Championship Game, narrowly beating the Buffalo Bills to qualify for Super Bowl LIX. The Chiefs' luck ran out in New Orleans when the Philadelphia Eagles trounced them 40-22 to end their bid at a historic Super Bowl three-peat. There was plenty of buzz entering the Tennessee Titans' first preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It would be the first time No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft Cam Ward would take the field under center for Tennessee. Unfortunately for Tennessee, Ward's preseason debut didn't translate into a win. The Buccaneers trounced the Titans 29-7. Ward went 5-of-8 passing for 67 yards. In the preseason, no games go to overtime. They end in ties after the fourth quarter. That's what happened in Week 1 between the Seattle Seahawks and Las Vegas Raiders, with the contest ending in a 23-23 deadlock. In coach Pete Carroll's return to Seattle, the Raiders had a chance to win on the road. But LB Jalan Gaines blocked Daniel Carson's attempt at a 55-yard field goal. Raiders QB Aidan O'Connell went 18-of-30 passing for 205 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Seahawks QB Drew Lock tallied one touchdown and one interception on 147 passing yards. The Kansas City Chiefs fell to the Arizona Cardinals 20-17 in Week 1 of the preseason. Chiefs quarterback Bailey Zappe went 8-of-17 passing for 70 yards with two interceptions. Patrick Mahomes saw his first game action since Super Bowl LIX in February against the Philadelphia Eagles. He threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to receiver Jason Brownlee to open the scoring before getting removed. It will be interesting to see whether the three-time Super Bowl champion quarterback will make an appearance tonight against the Seahawks. If he does, it'll likely be another brief showing. The Atlanta Falcons-Detroit Lions preseason game ended in scary circumstances. Lions DB Morice Norris was carted off the field in an ambulance during the fourth quarter following a hit. Lions and Falcons players joined hands in the middle of the field, an expression of solidarity for Norris. The clock ran for eight minutes and 10 seconds before the game was suspended. The good news is that Norris is going to be OK. He arrived at the Lions' training facility on Monday following his injury and is in concussion protocol. The score was 17-10 in favor of the Lions when the game was called. The Chiefs-Seahawks game will be played at Lumen Field. Home of the Seahawks since 2002, Lumen Field is one of the loudest stadiums in the NFL, with decibel levels often exceeding 100. The capacity of Lumen Field is 68,740 for football (expandable to 72,000). The Titans-Falcons game will be played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The home of the Falcons since August 2017, Mercedes-Benz Stadium has a capacity of 71,000 for football (expandable to 75,000) and hosted Super Bowl LIII after the 2018 season. They also hold a three-game cushion in the wild card race, positioning themselves as one of the league's hottest contenders in August. Since sweeping the then–MLB-best Detroit Tigers before the break, Seattle has gone 15-8 in its last 23 games, looking every bit like a legitimate division threat. FanGraphs is buying into the hype. The site gives Seattle an 85.9% chance of making the postseason — slightly higher than Houston's 84.9% — and the best odds in the division to reach the World Series at 17.6%. Their chances of winning it all sit at 8.2%, comfortably ahead of the Astros' 5.5%. The only category where Houston holds an edge is in the AL West title odds, with FanGraphs giving them a 49.2% shot compared to Seattle's 44.2%. With the season series tied 5-5 and one more three-game set in Houston remaining, that race is far from settled. Mariners eyeing postseason after huge trade deadline Suárez's arrival, along with slugger Josh Naylor, has transformed an already dangerous Mariners lineup into one of the league's deepest. President of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto made it clear after the deadline that the team believes in its roster from top to bottom. 'We feel like we have as good a lineup as there is in our league,' Dipoto said. 'Our rotation… has proven it can be as good as anybody in this league. Hopefully we hit on all cylinders going forward.' Of course, Mariners fans have heard this kind of optimism before. Just last season, Seattle held a 10-game division lead in June with over 90% playoff odds, only to collapse down the stretch and miss October entirely. The scars of 2001's record-setting regular season and subsequent playoff disappointment still linger, and until this group seals the deal, there will be lingering doubt. But this year's team feels different. With Julio Rodríguez and Randy Arozarena anchoring the outfield, multiple All-Star bats in the lineup, and a rotation that can match anyone in the league, the Mariners have the tools to break their 24-year division title drought. Suárez's highlight-reel throw Friday night was just another sign that Seattle has the defensive grit to complement its offensive firepower. If they can keep this momentum, the Mariners might finally turn their 'almost' seasons into a division crown — and maybe more.
