Pogacar closes in on fourth title

By: AFP Text Size: The attack-minded Pogacar played it safe with just two days left until the race finish on the Champs Elysees. LA PLAGNE TARENTAISE: Dutch rider Thymen Arensman picked up a second stage win at the Tour de France on Friday, winning stage 19 at La Plagne ski resort as defending champion Tadej Pogacar closed in on a fourth title. Arensman crossed the finish line exhausted but delirious in the heavy rain, two seconds ahead of title contender Jonas Vingegaard and his great rival Pogacar. Barring a collapse, Team UAE rider Pogacar should claim his fourth Tour de France title aged just 26 years in Paris on Sunday. The attack-minded Pogacar explained how he had played it safe with just two days left until the race finish on the Champs Elysees. 'When Arensman attacked I let him go, setting my own rhythm. It was close, I did want to win, but I'm just glad it's over,' Pogacar said. 'It was a good win from Thymen, he deserved it.' The Slovenian exits the Alps with a lead of 4min 24sec on second-placed Vingegaard. Vingegaard for once finished ahead of Pogacar, but this was a fourth second-place finish on this 21-day slog. Pogacar has dominated the 2025 Tour de France, winning stages on rolling runs in the north and west at Rouen and the Mur de Bretagne in the first week, then twice on the mountain slopes of the Pyrenees in week two. As the Tour entered its end game Pogacar unexpectedly simply protected his lead through the Alps rather than go on his trademark all-out attacks. The 2022 and 2023 champion Vingegaard had two off days, first on a time trial and secondly in the Pyrenees, leaving Pogacar to surge into a position of such strength he only needed to follow. German breakout star Florian Lipowitz strengthened his hold on overall third place and top spot in the under-25's section on his debut Tour de France as he tracked the title rivals all the way to the summit finish for an impressive Tour debut with Red Bull Bora. For Arensman and Ineos this was a symbolic victory as the British team begin their revival with the return to the helm of Dave Brailsford, mastermind of seven wins in his previous stint. Arensman slumped to the ground in tears at La Plagne as he just held on with a white-knuckle struggle over the final kilometres. 'I'm totally destroyed,' said Arensman, who also won stage 14 at Superbagneres in the Pyrenees. Mirroring Ben O'Connor's winning tactic on the thrilling stage 18, climber Arensman attacked at the bottom of the final climb with the title rivals more concerned with tracking each other. But this time the breakaway stage winner had to sweat out the run in with the top trio closing fast. 'It feels like a dream, that's Jonas and Tadej and everyone knows they are the best in the world,' he said. The 25-year-old Ineos man fell over into the barriers exhausted at the line and broke into sobs of relief. This final mountain stage was shortened overnight due to an outbreak of a cattle infection along the route, reduced to just 93km, which ran to a rowdy finish at 2050m altitude. The stage however was largely uncontested in comparison to Thursday's epic cat-and-mouse between Pogacar and Vingegaard, who attacked the champion 71km from the finish line without ever dislodging him. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Man Utd agree £74 million deal to sign Sesko: Reports
MANCHESTER: Manchester United have agreed a deal worth up to 85 million euros (US$99 million, £74 million) to sign striker Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig on Thursday, according to multiple reports in England. The BBC, Athletic and Sky Sports reported United will pay an initial 76.5 million euros for the 22-year-old with a further 8.5 million euros due in add-ons. Newcastle were also interested in signing the Slovenian, possibly to replace wantaway star Alexander Isak, a target for Liverpool. However, Sesko has been wooed by the enduring stature of the 20-time English champions despite a lack of European football in the coming season. His arrival will complete an overhaul of the Red Devils' blunt attack. Only four other teams scored fewer than United's 44 goals in 38 Premier League games last season as the English giants endured their worst campaign for 51 years, finishing 15th in the table. Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo were signed earlier in the window, taking United's total spend on forwards in recent months to over £200 million. Sesko had also previously been linked with Arsenal after impressing during his two-year spell in Germany, where he scored 39 times in 87 appearances for Leipzig, including 21 last season. Standing 1.95 metres (6ft 4ins) tall, Sesko's towering physique, electric pace and eye for goal have earned comparisons with Manchester City's Erling Haaland. Like Haaland, he also made his name at RB Salzburg before moving to Germany in 2023. United are banking on Sesko realising his abundant potential to fire them back into contention at the top of the Premier League table. Between them, Sesko, Cunha and Mbeumo combined for 58 goals last season. The massive outlay on their arrivals needs to bear fruit quickly with United under pressure to meet financial sustainability rules, especially without the revenue of European football this season.--AFP

Frankfurt sign Japan winger Doan in £17m deal until 2030
EINTRACHT Frankfurt have secured the services of Japan international Ritsu Doan from Bundesliga rivals Freiburg. The 27-year-old winger has signed a contract that will keep him at the club until 2030. Frankfurt reportedly paid 20 million euros (£17 million) to acquire the attacking midfielder. Doan leaves Freiburg after making 123 appearances for the club over several seasons. During his time at Freiburg, he contributed 26 goals and 23 assists for the German side. Last season proved particularly productive as he netted 10 times and provided eight assists in the Bundesliga. His performances helped Freiburg secure fifth place and Europa League qualification last term. The Japanese star becomes Frankfurt's second major summer signing after Jonathan Burkardt. His arrival helps compensate for the departure of Hugo Ekitike to Premier League champions Liverpool. Frankfurt sporting director Markus Kroesche expressed his delight at the acquisition. 'In the past few years Ritsu Doan has shown his high quality in the Bundesliga and brings a level of skill which will help us to achieve our goals,' Kroesche said. At international level, Doan has earned 57 caps for Japan, scoring 10 goals for his country. Frankfurt will complete their pre-season preparations with a friendly against Fulham this weekend. The Bundesliga campaign begins for Frankfurt with a home fixture against Werder Bremen on August 23. - AFP

Michail Antonio departs West Ham after decade-long career
West Ham United have confirmed Michail Antonio will leave the club after 10 years. The 35-year-old forward's contract will not be renewed following his lengthy injury absence. Antonio has been sidelined since a serious car accident in December left him with a broken leg. The Jamaica international had expressed hopes of returning to professional football. West Ham praised Antonio as their all-time top Premier League goalscorer with 83 goals in 323 appearances. The club stated he remains a respected figure in their history. 'Michail will always be a much-loved and respected member of the West Ham United family,' the club's official statement read. Support for his rehabilitation will continue through training and medical access. Negotiations are ongoing regarding a potential non-playing role for Antonio at West Ham. He was part of the squad that won the 2023 Europa Conference League. 'Everyone at West Ham United would like to sincerely thank Michail for his outstanding, dedicated service in a claret and blue shirt over the last ten years,' the statement added.
