Intel Bets on AI to Slash Costs

Semiconductor giant Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) plans to lay off a significant number of employees this summer as new CEO Lip-Bu Tan takes drastic action to reduce costs. Some of those layoffs will reportedly occur in the manufacturing business, even as Intel attempts to sell its foundry services to third-party customers.
Outside its factories, Intel's marketing division appears to be on the chopping block. A report from The Oregonian 's OregonLive.com suggests that the company plans to outsource many of its marketing jobs to Accenture, a major consulting company, and that Accenture will use artificial intelligence to help deliver marketing services. In a note reviewed by the newspaper, the company told employees that any remaining in-house marketing teams would be lean.
According to the note, Intel is betting that Accenture's AI technology can help personalize customer experiences, automate processes, and sift through mountains of information more efficiently than its current marketing teams.
How much money will Intel save?
While we don't know any details about how many marketing employees will be laid off or how much Intel will pay Accenture to outsource marketing services, Intel spends a pretty penny on marketing. The company spent $856 million on advertising, which includes direct marketing, in 2024. That's already down from $950 million in 2023 and $1.2 billion in 2022. The broader marketing, general, and administrative expense category, which includes advertising spending, was $5.5 billion in 2024.
Intel could potentially cut its costs by hundreds of millions of dollars by largely outsourcing its marketing operations. For a company that generated $53 billion in revenue last year, that may not seem like a huge amount. But every bit counts as Intel races to return to growth, return to profitability, and convince investors that it has a viable turnaround plan.
While reducing costs is critical for Intel, relying on a consulting company and AI for marketing could have the unintended consequence of hurting its brand. At the very least, it's an open question whether this plan will improve or diminish the effectiveness of Intel's marketing efforts.
Part of a broader plan
Intel laid off around 15% of its workforce last August, and the next round of layoffs could be similar in size. Some rumors suggest that Intel will slash another 20% from its headcount, or roughly 20,000 employees. Tan is working to remove layers of middle management, which he believes slows the company down.
In a message to employees in April, Tan noted that many teams were eight or more layers deep. Team size had become something to be maximized by many managers at Intel, Tan said. While the exact number of layoffs is still unknown, I think it will likely be a large number.
Intel is reportedly also considering laying off as many as 15% to 20% of its factory workers, who are responsible for manufacturing Intel's chips as well as chips for third-party foundry customers. It's not clear if Intel is changing anything about its foundry roadmap, although dropping some of its first-party products is possible as the company simplifies and streamlines its operations.
Intel's gross margin, which is the percentage of revenue left over after subtracting out direct costs related to manufacturing its products, fell to 32.7% in 2024. That's down nearly 10 percentage points from 2022, and it's far below the 60%+ gross margin the company achieved during much of the 2010s. Winning external foundry customers, which would allow the company to drive more volume through its factories, is a big part of the equation to boost gross margin. But wringing out cost efficiencies is as well.
Through layoffs and cost cutting in its manufacturing business, Intel is aiming to boost gross margin and efficiency. Meanwhile, the reported outsourcing of marketing teams and any other layoffs that will hit the non-manufacturing employees will reduce operating expenses. With demand for its products down significantly over the past few years, Intel needs to get smaller to have any chance at turning itself around.

Its stock price leaped by nearly 5% that trading session, thanks to news of a big institutional investor's reversal on a planned sale (which likely would have pushed the stock's price down). KKR's share gain easily beat the slightly over 1% advance of the S&P 500 index. Planned sale stopped? That sizable investor is China Investment Corporation (CIC), the country's sovereign wealth fund. Before market open, Bloomberg, citing unidentified "people familiar with the deal," reported that CIC has canceled a planned sale of several stakes it held in U.S. investment management companies. This list included top names in the sector -- in addition to KKR, positions in Carlyle Group and TPG were to be sold. The sell-off was planned earlier this year as a move to reduce exposure to U.S. businesses. However, at present CIC is no longer interested in such a divestment. The financial news agency didn't cite any reason or reasons for this. U.S. investment bank Evercore was recruited by CIC to broker the sale, Bloomberg and another, earlier article from Reuters stated. Neither China Investment nor Evercore responded to Bloomberg's requests for comment on the matter. Similarly, KKR, Carlyle Group, and TPG haven't yet made official statements regarding it, either. Cold feet getting warmer A foreign investor getting cold feet about selling U.S. equities is entirely plausible; earlier this year the world grew increasingly worried that the "punitive" tariffs initially imposed by the Trump administration would damage the U.S. economy. Those concerns are fading quickly, so potential sellers like CIC might be feeling more confident about our country's growth prospects. I wouldn't buy or sell any stock purely on the basis of an institutional investor's move, so I firmly believe folks should hold or ditch KKR entirely on its fundamentals. SaskTel sees fifth year of dwindling income in ‘very hot' marketplace

SaskTel is reporting another year of diminishing income as a unique player in a competitive and closely regulated industry. The crown corporation was one of seven provincial crowns to file its annual financial report Monday. It says a combination of competition, limited market expansion and 'cord cutting' reduced net income for the fifth year in a row. 'We are well positioned where we're keeping our market share quite strong, and we do compete in a very, very hot telecommunications marketplace in our province,' said Jeff Welke, SaskTel's director of corporate affairs. Net income for the 2024-2025 fiscal year was $82.2 million, a decrease of $13.2 million from 2023-24. Net income has been on a declining trend each year dating back to $130.8 in 2021. In its annual report, the company highlights the constraints it faces as a crown corporation, which isn't seeking profits like a publicly traded company would. The report says competitor intensity — including non-traditional competitors like Starlink — industry consolidation, and disruptive technology could impact revenue and market share going forward. 'I think we all see the big players that are in here — the Bells, the Telus', the Rogers,' Welke said. 'There's all kinds of competition that way.' [Note: CTV is a division of Bell Media] SaskTel lost over three per cent of MaxTV customers last year, or 3,612 people, and nearly six per cent, or 14,108, landline customers, as cord cutting continues to affect business. Welke admitted there's a point where the company will need to look at not offering the service to save money, but for now, the company is legally obligated to provide 'basic level services.' 'We're seeing when that cutover can be made and when new technologies could happen and be good enough to make that basic service offering (to) fulfill what the regulator needs as well,' Welke said. 'That day is coming. It's not around the corner, but it's coming down the pike, eventually.' Another obstacle to increasing revenue, says Welke — the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), which is the national regulator for telecommunications and broadcasting. Last year, the CRTC required large telephone companies to allow competitors to use their fibre optic networks to offer internet services, which the CRTC called 'a move aimed at increasing competition and potentially lowering prices for consumers.' In the report, SaskTel says it actively participates in CRTC proceedings to ensure SaskTel's unique position is understood, including its differences from other players within the Canadian telecom industry. Since it operates as a crown corporation, it lacks the ability to expand its consumer services beyond Saskatchewan's borders. Other telecom giants in the country have also argued against the CRTC decision, saying it limits profitability. 'We disagree with having to open up. Perhaps, our networks of competition at rates we don't set. So those are the kinds of things that happen in that environment, and it makes it yet another business challenge for us, but one we're going to take on,' Welke said. Jeremy Harrison, the minister responsible for crown corporations, said Saskatchewan's footprint and sparsely populated north also make it a challenge to invest money in infrastructure to provide internet in rural communities where others wouldn't. 'Things like rural fiber rollout, which frankly, wouldn't have been made if this were a private company who would just not be able to justify the long-term return on investment,' Harrison said. 'We've made that decision that it's worth doing.' With stiff competition for a limited number of customers, a changing regulatory environment and changing technology, SaskTel is facing difficulties hitting income projections. 'We're here to compete and, and we're certainly poised to do that,' Welke said.
