Spain bar shootings: Who was Glasgow man Ross Monaghan?

Glasgow Times2 days ago

It was inevitable that, as the Lyons family climbed the ladder of organised crime, Monaghan would become a key lieutenant, his relationship with Eddie and Steven said to be 'like that of brothers'.
However, while most involved in such high level crime operate under the radar, Monaghan, who grew up just outside Glasgow, found his name in the headlines after he was arrested his late 20s over one of Scotland's most notorious gangland slayings.

(Image: Kevin Carroll) In January 2010, Kevin 'Gerbil' Carroll, a feared enforcer for the rival Daniel clan, attended a meeting with associates in the carpark of the Asda superstore in Robroyston, Glasgow.
There, he met drug dealer Stephen Glen, who was linked to the Lyons family and, a court later heard, Carroll told him: 'You're working for me now. Anybody that doesn't fall into line is going to get banged.'
The Gerbil was then sitting in the back of a black Audi A3 in the supermarket carpark when a Volkswagen Golf swerved to a halt in front of the vehicle as horrified shoppers looked on.
Two masked men emerged from the Golf and opened fire, through the passenger windows, with Carroll shot 13 times in the head and chest in an attack that lasted 25 seconds.
Despite the murder being one of the most audacious and outrageous gangland hits ever carried out in Scotland, the police initially met with a wall of silence.
But eight months after the shooting, 2010 Monaghan was arrested. His partner would give birth to their daughter just 10 days later.

Monaghan spent six months on remand in Glasgow's HMP Barlinnie charged with Carroll's murder and, such was the was the escalation in hostilities even then, detectives visited the prison to issue him with a threat to life warning.
The so-called Osman Warnings, named after a London shooting victim, are only issued when police intelligence suggests an individual faces a credible threat to their life.
The murder trial followed, only for Monaghan to be sensationally acquitted in May 2012 after a judge ruled there was insufficient evidence to convict him.
At the time Monaghan said: 'It's been a nightmare. I'm glad to get this over. I've always said it was nothing to do with me.'

Two years after that, Monaghan was shot in the shoulder outside a Glasgow primary school after dropping his child off. The gunman was pushing a child's buggy when he opened fire on Muirdykes Road in Penilee.
Monaghan, then 35, was discharged from hospital after treatment for a shoulder wound.
Police spoke of their disgust at the shooting being carried out next to a busy nursery and two associates of the Daniel clan were charged. Both would be cleared of the attack at a trial but were later convicted for other organised crime offences.
Monaghan, 43, is believed to have moved to Spain a couple of years after the school shooting, and is understood to have become involved in business interests in the Costa del Sol, including the pub on the beachfront bearing his name. It would be the location where, alongside decades-long friend Eddie Lyons jnr, he would meet a merciless end on Saturday night.

Ten wedding guest dresses for under £50 including supermarket steals, dresses to flatter fuller busts & bloated tummies

WITH wedding season in full swing, deciding what outfit to wear as a guest isn't always the easiest of shopping tasks. Not only is there so much choice out there, but some dresses can cost a fortune. And that's an added cost on top of actually attending the wedding itself. Luckily the high street is full of options that don't have to break the bank and will still make you look and feel amazing. From feathered one shouldered gowns, to tummy flattering ruching and dresses to accommodate a fuller bust, Deputy Fashion Editor Abby McHale has scoured the shops to bring you ten of the best dresses all for under £50. Tu at Sainsbury's This red crochet dress from Tu at Sainsbury's is a steal at just £28. Crochet is great for the summer months as it is cooling, so if you're heading to a hot destination for a wedding this could be a good option. This pretty check floral pattern is soft and romantic, plus it has a cut out detail at the back, but it's high enough that you can still wear a bra - result. H&M Buy now, £22.99 Ruching is a great technique that looks great and flatters all, especially in areas you may feel more self conscious of. This H&M dress keeps you cinched in at the waist with its stretchy fabric, the asymmetric element gives Grecian vibes with the gold clasp on the shoulder making this dress look a lot more expensive than its £22.99 price tag. This is certainly a dress that you'd be comfortable in all day long. Zara Nothing screams glam quite like a one shouldered cape dress with a feathered cuff. And for under £50 - practically unheard of. This dress from Zara really brings the wow factor and if you're after something that is lightweight, airy and most importantly comfortable for the day, then this ticks all the boxes. Very Buy now, £25 Pale yellow is one of the big colours for the season, so why not hop on board the trend for just £25. The twist front around the bust area makes this a great option for everyone no matter what size you are and the tie straps also make a nice additional detail. The dress is made from a stretchy ribbed fabric, meaning it won't cling where you don't want it to. River Island Wrap style dresses are always a fail safe flattering option for all and this dress from River Island is a new take on the look. F&F at Tesco Buy now, £29.50 F&F at Tesco has not only launched online recently, meaning you no longer can only shop in store, but it's new rage of occasion wear will make you feel like a million dollars. Boohoo If you're looking for a long sleeve maxi dress then this one from Boohoo could be for you. Not only is it a fun vibrant colour perfect for summer, but the elasticated waist panel in the middle makes this dress extra comfy and gives you some wiggle room. Having the elastic in the middle then means the dress fans out and flows over the body to create a lovely shape. What's the best style that suits everyone? ACCORDING to the fashion pros at Fabulous, there's a new style of dress that suits all body shapes. Low-slung, dropped-waist silhouette styles have surged, thanks to the Noughties fashion trend that has swept the catwalks, social media and, of course, the high street. First seen on the runways of luxury labels Molly Goddard and Jil Sander, the style typically cinches around the hip and pelvic area rather than the waist. Now a plethora of more affordable options of the dress that suits a number of body shapes have dropped just as the sun starts to come out. Clemmie Fieldsend, Fashion Editor, said: "There's something so stylish about these dresses, and I love them. "The simplicity of the top half teamed with the full skirt is like a sleeker and more grown-up tutu. "I have a short torso so the dropped waist makes my body look longer, but, thankfully, the long skirt means your legs don't look shorter. "Plus it means I can tap into the low-waist trend without baring all in a pair of low-slung jeans. "I know I'll be living in mine all summer, paired with black sandals and sunnies, but for now all I need is a blazer slipped over the top and a closed-toe shoe and I'm ready to go." Meanwhile, Fashion Director, Tracey Lea Sayer, added: "I remember dropped-waist dresses from the 80s. I loved them then and I still love them again now! "Forty years on from when they were first popular and I am not so sure they will be quite as flattering around my middle, because two kids and middle-aged spread later, my waist doesn't exist any more. "With a dress like this I can disguise my middle bit and still feel on trend for summer."

‘It was supposed to stay confidential' – Rory McIlroy ‘p***ed off' after private information is leaked

RORY McILROY was 'p***ed off' that news of his driver failing technical standards was leaked at last month's USPGA Championship. Two days before the tournament, the club was pulled from his bag after official testing showed it crossed the 'trampoline effect' threshold — when the club face becomes more springy. 2 2 Failures are supposed to be confidential with no blame attached to the player but the news broke on the Friday evening. World No 1 Scottie Scheffler 's driver also failed but that never became public until he revealed it at his winner's press conference. Masters champ McIlroy, 36, left Quail Hollow without speaking a word in public. Ahead of teeing up in the Canadian Open, which starts today, the Northern Irishman said: 'I was a little p***ed off because I knew that Scottie's driver had failed but my name was the one that was leaked. It was supposed to stay confidential. 'I didn't want to get up there and say something that I regretted, either, because I'm trying to protect Scottie, I don't want to mention his name.' He went on to add: "I'm trying to protect TaylorMade. I'm trying to protect the USGA, PGA of America, myself. I just didn't want to get up there and say something that I regretted. "With Scottie's stuff, that's not my information to share. I knew that that had happened, but that's not on me to share that, and I felt that process is supposed to be kept confidential, and it wasn't for whatever reason. That's why I was pretty annoyed at that. "From a responsibility standpoint, look, I understand, but if we all wanted to, we could all bypass you guys and we could just go on this and we could go on social media and we could talk about our round and do it our own way. "I think there should be an understanding that this is a two-way street, and as much as we need to speak to you guys, we're sort of, like we understand the benefit that comes from you being here and giving us the platform and everything else. So I understand that. "But again, I've been beating this drum for a long time. If they want to make it mandatory, that's fine, but in our rules it says that it's not, and until the day that that's maybe written into the regulations, you're going to have guys skip from time to time, and that's well within our rights." Scheffler won the PGA Championship last month, marking his third major title. He finished at 11-under 273, five strokes clear of the field in Charlotte.
