Lots of work to be done for China to return to top of men's table tennis, Wang says
At the Lusail Sports Arena on Sunday, Wang Chuqin won his first world title in the men's singles, while compatriot Sun Yingsha defended her crown from two years ago. Wang and Sun also won the mixed doubles event, while Kuai Man and Wang Manyu won the women's competition.
However, Japan's Hiroto Shinozuka and Shunsuke Togami won the men's doubles titles, with China failing to reach the semi-finals for the first time since 1975.
'We made it to the final in four events, and three of them were against athletes from other countries,' Wang Liqin, president of the Chinese Table Tennis Association, said.
'According to the previously set goals and calculations, we were very determined to reach the final and ultimately achieved this victory, including this time, in the men's singles event.

'For us, the biggest challenge is the men. Compared to the women, our entire male team still needs to improve their ability and experience in major competitions.'

China needs to show it can compete on more than price
When policymakers start using internet slang to describe the economy, it is a sign something is not right. The word neijuan was once used by Chinese students to depict burnout from seemingly pointless competition. Now it is showing up in policy language, to explain the growing economic strain caused by China's price war. Advertisement Too much supply and weak demand are pushing prices down. The deflationary pressure is building not just on company profits, but on the growth model that China has relied on for decades. The Chinese government has been shifting towards a growth model driven by innovation since at least 2014. We are now seeing the results of that shift in sectors like electric vehicles, semiconductors and high-end manufacturing – where Chinese companies are no longer just competing on price, but leading on technology, production capacity and global market share. Still, the pressure to cut prices remains widespread, especially among firms that have yet to transition away from volume-led growth. The next phase of China's transformation depends on getting more companies to follow the lead of innovation powerhouses like BYD, Huawei, Haier and DeepSeek. That means moving beyond low-cost competition and continuing to build brands, invest in technology and deliver differentiated products and services. That shift will not be easy. The producer price index has been falling year on year since late 2022, fuelling a deflationary spiral. And while the economy grew 5.2 per cent in the second quarter this year, pricing power is now being eroded. 01:58 China GDP figures beat market forecasts despite looming US tariff risks China GDP figures beat market forecasts despite looming US tariff risks For years, many Chinese firms competed in overseas markets by offering cheaper goods. At home, where competition is fierce, the focus has been on scale and volume. This model worked reasonably well when demand was strong. But with global trade under pressure from tariffs and domestic spending still weak, production is outpacing demand.

‘We're blowing everyone away': Trump shrugs off Latin American nations looking to China
US President Donald Trump on Thursday said he was not worried about Brazil Mexico and other Latin American nations moving closer to China, telling reporters in the Oval Office, 'They can do whatever they want.' Advertisement The remarks came during a brief exchange at the White House. Trump added: 'You know, none of them are doing very well, and what we're doing in terms of economics, we're blowing everyone away, including China. We're doing better than any other country in the world right now.' Trump's comments came as Brazil steps up coordination with Beijing to mount a multilateral response to the tariffs he imposed last month. On Tuesday, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva spoke for about an hour by phone with Chinese leader Xi Jinping to discuss the 'Brics bloc's role in countering unilateral trade measures'. The call was arranged after Washington announced a 50 per cent tariff on a wide range of Brazilian exports in late July, threatening billions of dollars in trade. Hong Kong Bulls race against time to find venue for Chinese basketball play-offs
Reigning champions Hong Kong Bulls have been left without a venue for China's National Basketball League play-offs this month, after the governing body ruled Southorn Stadium in Wan Chai was not up to standard. Advertisement The Hong Kong outfit are one of eight teams in the Chinese second-tier league this season. They have confirmed receipt of a warning letter from the Chinese Basketball Association, stating there is insufficient space between the stands – the goalposts – and the walls. The NBL's standards are on par with the requirements of the sport's world governing body, Fiba, whose Level 1 matches require a minimum of two metres of unobstructed space. The post-season, which features four teams, will run between August 30 and September 25, with the final a best-of-seven series. The Post understands that the Bulls are still actively looking for other venue options in the city to stage their play-off matches. Sources said that Hong Kong Coliseum was already found to be 'off limits' and had to be booked a full year in advance. Southorn Stadium has been deemed not up to standard by the NBL. Photo: Handout 'Kai Tak Arena could be available for some of the best-of-five semi-final series matches, but it is unlikely it could accommodate all three home matches,' the source said.
